The game is actually always supposed to give you an emerald piece on Pumpkin Hill or Egg Quarters that requires the drill.
They basically built in a way to make sure people wouldn't softlock themselves like Cade suggested.
Yea. Without glitches, one of the pieces/keys will always be buried on those levels.
Funny thing is it wouldn't even softlock you, you can easily just reroll pieces with death strats in every other stage, so it's just those stages that pose a consistent issue. Really surprised at how seemingly well-known this fact is, I've seen it a lot on this video.
The reason why there are so many Eggman levels back to back is because this game was only going to have 3 Playable characters. Sonic, Knuckles, and Eggman. People wanted characters like Tails to be playable so that's why all characters are Copy's of their Hero's counterpart.
It's almost impressive how unintentionally good Smith is at flying off the highway

Not always by any means, but there were plenty of times to hit that weren't capitalized on. It's fine though, not expecting high level play from youtubers just doing a race for fun.

The safes in Security Hall is the gimmick of the level, not a bug. Not all the safes can be opened, so you go to the top of the level to activate switches which allows you to open the safes you couldn't open before.
6:57 actually the game forcibly generates a location that requires the drill upgrade so that you can't miss it
Yeah thankfully when it comes to mech and hunting characters the game does a good job of making sure you get the necessary upgrades.
Now, sonic on the other hand is very easy to skip lightdash for and cause problems without glitches, not sure what they were thinking there.
