Sir Laurence Olivier, one of the greatest Shakespearean/film actors of the 20th century. Here we see him in the prime of his youth and beauty. Classic!
@@Рысь-б8р There is another movie I more associate him with--Hitchcock's Rebecca. Hitch of course had to augment the ending of Daphne DuMaurier's novel. He couldn't let Mrs. Danvers "end" be ambiguous. He had to drop a flaming ceiling on her!
Amazing to see Olivier this young! David Lean edited this film and Jack Cardiff was the camera assistant, both would go on to become two of the greatest filmmakers. And then there’s JM Barrie, who wrote the treatment!
Enchanting as first love. Bergner was famous in this role and you can see why. There was a great tradition of foreign-born Shakespearean actors going back to Salvini and I find her accent delightful. Olivier plays Orlando perfectly as a beautiful goof. Watch next the film he loved best, his magnificent Henry V. The whole cast here is classic and colorizing only heightens the lushness of the sets and costumes. Thanks so much for posting.
Oh, Yes! Bergner is the living end.. her accent and everything about her was spellbinding to these old eyes. Oh, to have a wife such as she. I did once, now passed on. I remember Hildegarde Neff as well... another gorgeous blonde actress. Oh, for the good old days of even the 1960's...but alas it's not to be... sanity, beauty, grace and class are thin nowadays.
@@elizabethcsicsery-ronay1633 I understand Liz-baby, but to each his or her own.... I loved it... the original looks muddy to me, fuzzy. It's just an opinion, we've all got them. And, you are correct in that some colorized films are a horror. The great unifying thing is Shakespeare's lines. Peace out.
There have been many great actors from Great Britain and Hollywood, but few have been really outstanding. This applies the star of this movie, the great Laurence Olivier, our very own Shakespeare's Hamlet. Just look at the way he speaks with his eyes; even when not speaking, everything is given to us on a plate in the subtext of emotions. Dashing, daring, and commanding, he was all this and much more. Another powerhouse of talent was his gorgeous wife, Vivien Leigh. May their souls rest in peace!
I don't know where "Very few have been outstanding," comes from: Peter O'Toole, Richard Burton, Timothy Dalton, Emma Thompson, Judie Dench, Michael York, ....all British stage actors, classically trained, sensational.
i'm from Bengladesh, currently pursuing BA English Literature(2nd year). it's captivating anti-romantic comedy, through this movie will help us understand the play properly and visualize the noble characters. Thanks for uploading this movie.
I normally find Shakespeare hard going, but that film was good. Sir Laurence Olivier and Elizabeth Bergner were great. I was pleasantly surprised to see John Laurie (Frazer from Dad's Army). A great actor. Thanks for posting this movie. 🙂👍
I thought Rosalind had an infectious personality and played the role in an impish way. She was convincing. I thought the whole presentation was beautifully produced and directed. Colour makes it more real than in Monocchrome
James Laurie did a season with the RSC and later headed a Shakespeare Company for JC Williamson Theatres in Australia. He found late fame in Dad's Army. William Walton composed the music for Olivier's Hamlet, Henry V and Richard lll.
Everyone in the comment section is showing off that they are literature students. They should realise that 99% people who are watching this drama are literature student / teacher. Be polite and get knowledge.😊😊
Produced in Britain and imported to the US for TCF to release. Decent colorization, difficult because of the flicker in the print. One can see why Olivier won over Vivien Leigh later on.
How do you get on the waiting list? I always drop a like, but am not sure how to get in the "waiting" list. Thank you for bringing us all these great old movies!
What a delicate movie! Good for nowadays. The family is one man and one woman and later ...the children. Teenagers must learn something from the meaning of the movie. The message is important more than the actors. But sure,I agree,Laurance Olivier is one of the best Shakespeare's actor. And here, including the other actors. It was a delighful day for me,to watch it.
When you hear Olivier speak Shakespeare the words come tripping off the tongue so effortlessly. The failings of actors doing Shakespeare is too often the lines are spoken and heard as lines. Like heavy-handed pronouncements. Without the filter to calm the tenor of the character's mood.
When this was done, Olivier had little experience as a Shakespearean actor, but he corrected that in the next few years. This version is severely abridged. Better is the BBC film starring Helen Mirren and lasting an hour more. It is at the Internet Archive.
Celia looks more beautiful than Rosalind in this play but the original play is different! In original writing Rosalind described as more beautiful and taller than celia
It's tough reading a play instead of watching it. I love reading, and honestly I agree with you in the case of plays. Especially Shakespeare. I just wish RP wasn't the go-to accent for Shakespeare. Too stuffy in my opinion.
It's magnificent except for the Roselind. Perhaps Elizabeth Bergner was effective on stage, in German, but they had so many great actresses to choose from in England at that time. They say that Judith Anderson was masterful in the role.
Meh! So, 'typically' arrayed a 'Shakespearean ' film of Its' time-frame in Its: hodge-podge of Set/costume design, antiquated Acting style, and at times the Pacing is just too theatrically stilted....BUT!! The spoken delivery is just WONDEROUS and allows the audience to sit and not only enjoy the show, but also to perceive and grasp with intelligence Shakespeare's spoken words. What with Olivier's very attractive looks one sees what in the boudoir dept. So many women and MEN, found (can easily see why Danny Kaye could barely ever to keep his hands off-of-him), and Yes, was well understood by many that Judith Anderson was a master in the role of Rosalind (but that the reason she did not get the role is that she really, really DID NOT care nor personally like Olivier----the Man. But did LIKE and appreciated his acting abilities.
Thanks to a stupid PBS station this movie became a nuisance. They show it almost each week for the last 5 years. And then PBS is begging us for financial donations. Pure rubbish...

This is so great: not only THE greatest Shakespearian actor ever, Sir Larry, but also in living colour! Thanks so much for uploading.
Leave a black and white film alone. Colorizing is horrible.
Indeed, if not THE greatest actor ever to appear onscreen and on theater stage!
Yes, Olivier is one of the greatest. The other is Charles Laughton.
