When I think of Sherlock Holmes, I always hear Clive Merrison and Michael Williams. I listen to the radio plays over and again.

Clive Merrison has the feel of Holmes, which is so precious and hard to come by.

Absolutely. When I read the original stories now, my mind's ear has it in the voices of Merrison and Williams. Williams (and showrunner Bert Coules) understood that Watson was no buffoon, and Merrison (and Coules) understood that Holmes needed Watson to ground him.

Same here. I listened greedily to every conceivable English audiobook I could lay my hands on here in Madrid when I was learning English, and these productions were just what the doctor ordered. I can never forget their voices.

I agree with Clive on his summation of Michael, however when he sais that they were the first too record the complete cannon, I couldn’t help but 🤔. Of course I wouldn’t dream of contradicting him but his comment has me pondering, being a long time reader, viewer and not least listener of all things Sherlock; Michael was an excellent Watson for sure But, Andrew Sachs who also portrayed Watson impeccably alongside Clive’s stunning Sherlock in the same BBC radio series.
This is what had me pondering (as mentioned earlier) if both Clive and Michael recorded the full canon; what about the many Clive and Andrew recordings of the very same Sherlock Holmes series!!!!! One can only surmise that the Sherlock stories the latter pairing so wonderfully portrayed, could not be the work of A.C. Doyle, But stories of the central characters written by another!
*And when it comes to ‘the go-to-guy’ for the BBC then look no further than the awesome talents of one Bert Coules*
I would be grateful if anyone could shed light on this.

Michael Williams played Watson in all of the episodes that are a part of the original cannon. The stories with Andrew Sachs are known as The Further Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. They are pastiches based on references in the original stories. I believe Bert Coules wrote them.
