Adam I thought it summed up the mixed branding identity crisis very well 👌 yes 5 always seemed to have a confused understanding of how to express the FIVE 😅
Funny how they keep going back and forth with names: Channel 5, to Five, back to Channel 5 and now back to 5. Same with ITV going to ITV1, back to ITV and back to ITV1 again.
Nickelodeon is currently joining forces with Channel 5’s Milkshake to create the first US/UK co-production ever for Nick Jr’s American broadcasting, Tim Rex in Space which premieres later this year.
Honestly if they started airing some older cartoons like south park, beavis and butthead and daria like comedy central has started doing I think it would work really well
Especially as they could use it as a promotion for Paramount+ thus making it a win/win situation. Put say 3-5 seasons of South park on the service and if you want to see the rest they can puhs you to Paramount+ to finish. And there are plenty of shows they can do that with, for example take The Challenge. P+ in the UK only has the newest 3 seasons but that losses one of the core aspects of the show and thats unlike the norm with competative reality where its a new set of players each season apart from when they do an Alll-Star season every season has returning players alongside some rookies that traditionally came from one of MTV's big early reality shows of The Real World or Road Rules but now come frok across the reality world OR you would have fresh meat seasons that brought in players with no reality TV experience. That means that not only do you potentially know players from other shows BUT more importantly you got to know them over the seasons and the evolution of their relationships over the seasons, you get situatiosn where friends become enemies because of actions one party took on a previous season, you have enemies finding common ground and becoming firends, you see people starting as young hotheads that people don't like to becoming mature and level headed that almost everyone loves. So of P+ UK could get all the seasons that P+ US has (Its something like Season 8 to 39 and 40 will be added in a month or so when the MTV first run window ends) and they stuck a bunch on 5's streaming service you would get people who enjoy not only the competuve element but also that evolution of the contestnats and want to see what comes next
There used to be a video label called Channel 5 video back in the 1980s and early 1990s. They used to distribute primarily old sell thru (as opposed to rental) tapes that was archive ITV stuff (including the ITC produced shows and films). I believe they then became Polygram video so the name change had absolutely nothing to do with the TV station.
They were initially a joint-venture between PolyGram and Heron Communications, and effectively replaced their standalone offerings (PolyGram Video and Media Home Entertainment). PolyGram then bought the venture and rebranded it as PolyGram Video, and strangely enough they revived the Channel 5 label as a children's label for 4 Front Video during the Late-1990s and Early-2000s, so yes, it continued when PolyGram Video became Universal Pictures Video.
Interesting one. Channel 5 is a station I don't watch that much, but their Christmas countdown output, as you've mentioned, is cosy and it's just what you need at that point in the year. I think a couple of Christmases ago I said "I don't think I've watched this much Channel 5 in my life - we may as well keep it tuned permanently!". When talking to people I often hear good things about their dramas. I was on Pluto the other day as well and found C5 had put some cheeky FAST channels on there without publicising it. I'm seeing comments that 5 should be the channel of 90s nostalgia, but after many years of trying in vain, they've found their niche with cosy and warm TV for a slightly older demographic - it would be unwise to lose a hard-won battle in a cheap schedule revamp.
I can't remember if you usually do this, but I think it'd help to link the article you mention so we can be sure we're reading the right one (especially for people who watch a bit later and might have to wade through more recent reporting). Nae rush though, given the move and all ;)
Thanks Adam for uploading, I'd love to see this new '5' really celebrate its legacy as the most 90s of UK channels. Just as many of us associate C4 with the early 80s, both in the idents and the - painfully at times - PC/socially conscious programming, I think 5 should revel in it's Spice Girls/1997 zeitgeist, the times in which they launched and we remember them. Also, Power Of Five was a tune
5:04 To me, it seems like the decision to put some of the Paramount library on there has been made with the intention of trying to guide people towards Paramount+, which makes sense, as it’s not the juggernaut that Netflix or Disney+ is. I’ve been a day 1 subscriber to Paramount+, but that has been almost exclusively for Star Trek. It has some good stuff on there for sure other than the aforementioned flagship property, but there’s also quite a lot of filler too, which is probably there to provide content while they wait for region specific licensing deals to lapse. Again, just a guess on my part, but it seems to make sense.
My only reason to watch channel 5 this past 15 years has been The Gadget Show, but that decided to self immolate by way of a new format that nobody wanted or asked for.
I miss old Channel 5 with the coloured Stripes. Golden days of Channel 5 those. From 2002 it went numb, Then now I rarely watch Channel 5 at all. But I remember the day very well when it launched all those years back. Oh! The Excitement 👌

I think Itv will also have a major rebrand this year if Itv is taken over & I think the Itv name will soon disappear allthogher if Itv plc is broken up
@just_some_guy_innit Not sure exactly but it is possible if CVC capital partners buys Itv Studios I think CVC capital will bring back Granada name for production. But it's unlikely to Granada name brought back for liner broadcasting as TF1 are interested in buying the liner & streaming side of Itv which could see Itv liner channels & streaming service using TF1 name. But like I said Granada name will most likely be brought back for studios if sold to CVC Capital Partners maybe there even be a rival streaming service called Granada too who knows but Itv is in financial trouble & could be soon broken up with CVC Capital Partners & TF1 as suitors
Hello Adam , I’m going off topic about it’s about a new television channel dedicated to old kids show with their original theme tunes and programs that used to be on CBBC & CITV shows I would like to see old Thomas the Tank Engine, Rosie & Jim , Funhouse , finders keepers , fireman Sam, playdays , and many others what I grew up with. I was always told not to speak over someone. But as you're speaking yourself I suppose it acceptable. It's also humorously Ironic that this video is titled 'This cannot fail..' 🤭
The problem with the name Channel 5, or even just 5, is that it has become increasingly meaningless. It only has vague relevance today for the main channel, it's still the fifth in line on the broadcast EPG's. But with so many spin-off services under the 5 brand, what relevance does it have once you drift out into the ocean of live and on-demand offerings from all broadcasters? This problem also applies to Channel 4. I don't see a long-term future for these legacy brands which are simply based upon a number. They are weak names in today's market.
Paramount Global owns Channel 5, is there actually any need now to keep the name channel 5 ??? Or 5 or five name now??? if this ott focus on streaming by all UK broadcasting is way forward? Why not use paramount name as a free service run alongside subscription as free option the paramount channel etc. Traditional broadcasting is over so would stand out more actually carrying the big company Paramount name now. 5 star and 5 USA become paramount TV channels 2 and 3 with main channel 5 becomes big eye grabbing main paramount TV channel 1. Catch up app part of paramount app which promotes their subscription service as well ...win win situation..no need have separate channel 5 focus now times moved on ..be big stand out grab audience
They should lean into the paramount programs they can get rather cheap. I’d watch more if they had more big production stuff. Pluto TV is pretty awesome also, why they don’t have South Park on channel 5 is a mystery, they used to have wwe highlights about a year ago maybe they can go for TNA Then again the shows that’s done well is not my type of shows
I remember being 27 when 5 came along (Channel 5) and it was only good signals in northern England and was useful for watching Liverpool and West Ham United playing European or pre-season friendly games. I remember 1960s singer Adam Faith's last words were...Channel 5 is sh1t!
There was more original drama on Ch5 in 2024 than all but the top 2 channels. Series such as Ellis were amongst the best of the year for any channel across the board. As for the rebranding, don't think they need it, they've got it pretty much nailed on as it is. Money wasted imho.
@@loftlegacy There are rumours that A3M lined up to buy Itv studios soon as there a article that Itv could soon be broken & also there is rumours that french TV channel TF1 could also soon buy the broadcasting arm of Itv & if that goes ahead I think the Itv brand will disappear before it's 70th anniversary with Itv 1 rebranded to TF1 (Itv X to TF1+) & Itv Studios back to Granada.
