- Vivekananda Youth Leadership Convention 2014 was organized by Vivekananda Samiti, IIT Kanpur from Jan.10-13, 2014.
With the focus on leadership, social entrepreneurship, and promotion of Indian culture and integrity, the Convention aimed to make our youth believe in their inherent potential. The Convention was graced by many eminent and talented leaders, who inspired the campus community with their motivating stories.
About Rimpa Shiva:
Rimpa Shiva, born in 1986 at Kolkata, has been blowing away audiences all over the world with her amazing Tabla playing. She is renowned for her incredible speed and control. She simply lives and breathes Tabla and her performances exhibit magnificent control, artistry, speed and power.
From the age of three, Rimpa showed keen interest in playing with the Tabla instead of dolls, pots and pans like other children of her age. Thus, from early childhood, she started receiving lessons from her father and guru Prof. Swapan Siva, disciple of the Late Ustad Keramatullah Khan of "Farukhabad Gharana".
Rimpa is a student of Rabindra Bharati University and has proved her mettle at several notable conferences across the length and breadth of the country. She has performed in front of many music maestros to great acclaim. She has also been a prolific performer abroad since 1997, participating in concerts in the USA and Europe, and accompanying Pandit Hariprasad Chourasia for 20 concerts in USA, Canada and Korea in 2005. But naturally, numerous awards and honours have come her way: she has received scholarships from the Salt Lake Music Festival and the West Bengal State Music Academy in 1995 and was awarded the Shanmukha Sangeet Shiromani in 2004 in Mumbai. As a child prodigy, she was the subject of an eponymous French documentary film "Rimpa Siva, Princess of Tablas" in 1998. She also received an award from Dr. A P J Abdul Kalam, the President of India in 2007, on behalf of the Indian Music Academy.
An audio CD of her solo performance on tabla was released by "Sense World Music (UK) in 2005.

Clarity? Her technique is flawless. Her ability cannot be restrained and I think that bothers a lot of people. You are witnessing something amazing here. Please check your intentions. Do you play tabla? Would you be proud of this performance if it was your own? Would you post it on RUclips and tell everyone you knew to watch it? Be honest with yourself before you criticize this absolute master. Imagine the countless hours of effort and devotion you are undermining. This woman is unbelievable. I challenge you to ask yourself- if Zakir Hussain gave this same performance is it possible it would be called one of his best?

I have been playing tabla for about 7 years, and I know I will not get to Rimpaji's level--not even a small fraction. I don't understand people's snide comments. If you cannot match up to her talent and skill, better not comment negatively.
Anyone can comment on a master's playing or cooking as you said, but what is the point? If you cannot even fathom that level, what is the point of commenting on it in your state?
Clay Walter There's always a right to express your opinion (unless you are trying to express an opinion to a guru). But I still see no need to post bad comments on RUclips about master class players.
I haved lived in India for 14 months, and will be returning soon to learn more tabla and singing. I know the crowds are very astute at times, and express their criticism or joy. But on RUclips, most of the people who comment on master tabla artists can't even play a peshkar, or even make a decent sound on the tabla. I think they have no right to comment on the mastery of esteemed artists. I think we need to remain humble and admire the good points of master artists. Rimpa has great energy and dedication, and is very knowledgable. I could possibly say some adverse things about her, but she is out my league when it comes to tabla. I can barely play a peshkar, gat kaida, and normal kaida, and leading into relas. I struggle making a tabla solo right through improvisation, missing timing and such. When such things to Rimpa is automatic, I can't really comment on her adversely.
It doesnt mean if you cant do something, you cant criticize someone doing it. I cant play any instrument but I can still hear differences between Mozart and some local minor band playing. I can also see differences between very skilled painters and not so skilled painters even if I cant paint a shit. She is very good indeed but I could hear she's not the best before I red any of the comments. That doesnt mean Im somehow better than her, its just an honest opinion. Its always right to criticize if your critic is based on a real perception of the whatever you are critizising.

If you could explain the point of criticizing someone who is at the beginning of their career but amazingly talented, and you don't know how to play tabla yourself, what worth is your criticism and what will it do?

I am impressed with the focused and concentrated tabla play from Rimpa shiva.
Totally agree with amadrunner, where is the musicality. Our great masters composed different composition types, some for speed, some for 'bhav' etc etc Not everything is supposed to be played at super speed where the nuances are shot to pieces.

Pretty sure all the guys commenting are just feeling like there had their family jewels chopped off by this girl and her amazing breathtaking clarity and riyazz. Her attitude with the Accompanying instrumentalist will get better as she gets older - that was the only “not good” part. Show respect for sure - and yes some will show speed and some beauty, that said this is not a string instrument with that kind (read type) of expression you are going to have to drum away. Unless a “Tarang”. Also people complaining clearly didn’t listen to 9:40 , and clearly have a problem with a woman tabla player. When mean do this (I recently commented on a thread where many of the same people are saying wah to man “banging” away cause he was the son of a legend)
After going on your website and reading about what you have to say about drone strings and them taking away the musicality from the sitar, I am assured that your opinion on music doesn't matter. Listen to Anuradha Pal and read the praises under her videos if you're so taken up with the notion that people have a problem with a woman playing the tabla.

Since I am such a famous drummer (as you should know as you probably recognized my name as soon as you saw it), i think that me appreciating rimpa's technical time signature is a big deal, you know being such an amazing drummer myself.
