"I was getting lit now I'm sad" perfectly sums up this entire season. This was such a perfect introduction to the final act and its showcase of emotions, characters converging, and stakes being raised through the roof is pure perfection. Not to mention the fact that the animation from this point on goes haaaard
@@JamesVSCinema Act 3 goes HARD. I don't know if Ive ever watched a show that moves along at the pace this show does. Some aspects of Ozark comes to mind. Literal edge of your seat, rollarcoaster ride.
I loved how Sevika isn't just some idiot. She's strong no doubt but there's more than muscle to her and it's clear why Silco who prizes intellect in those closest to him chose her as his number 2.
LOVED how they paired Ekko with a distinct visual and musical style. The fact that he gets his own “intro” really makes him feel like he’s the main character of his own story outside of Arcane. Hope to see more of Ekko and the firelights next season!
Ekko is the one character in the show who's the most unequivocally RIGHT of all the various viewpoints, so it makes sense that he'd be treated as the Hero of a story, even if it's sadly not THIS story. (Yet)
On the bridge, Jinx was humming the same song she was singing on the bridge at the start of episode 1. Difference is, this time she is the one to deliver the coup-de-grace shot. It all comes back around.
One little detail I love about Momma Talis' character design is the finger prosthesis she has. Probably lost them from frostbite after the blizzard Jace and her were caught in during his flashback in ep2.
There's so much going on in this episode, but it's great to see someone appreciating Jayce as a nuanced character. It seems like many people throw him under the bus and miss the weight he shoulders as a leader. He's in a role he didn't choose, during a war, with no easy choices, and _no one_ else stepping up to make decisions. Mel, Victor, Marcus, the council, all have their own agendas. And to top it off, he wields a source of unlimited power. It's a lot to handle.
The Micro-expressions in the facial and body animation is just incredible in this series, and one of the reasons it took so long to create. Its so much animation work, but clearly the payoff is amazing.
For real, my friend is a linguist and she was boggled at the detail put into animating the mouths alone. You can see the words forming on their lips, it’s incredible.
There is so much to love in this episode. Ekko's reveal, his fight with Jinx, Silco's meeting with the Chem Barons, Vi and Caitlyn's chemistry, etc. I want to point out something not a lot of people are talking about: the score. Sure, the music from other bands is incredible and integrated into the show extremely well (since they were all written FOR the show), but the score itself is also incredible. Particularly the leitmotifs, and the way they are woven into the rest of the music and subtly convey meaning where words cannot. Just the other day I realized something about this episode with the music. But first, a little setup: In episode one, during the prologue, music carries the entire scene and tells us everything we need to know. There's a particular part where the music begins to swell when Vander drops his gauntlets and walks away carrying Vi and Powder. In episode three, there is a very unique piece of music that plays while Powder is having a mental breakdown in her room. It's chaotic and nerve wracking, but there's a noticeable leitmotif in the strings. We hear this song again in this episode when Jinx is in front of the mirror tending her wound. Now, this is where it gets really interesting. In the scene where Jinx is confronting Silco about "lying" to her about Vi being alive, we hear an echo of that same leitmotif in the background. This plays while Jinx is clearly in control of the interaction and prodding Silco. But as he begins to take control of the situation and persuade her, the music then shifts to the leitmotif we heard when Vander first took in Vi and Powder, which hadn't been heard since then. Beautiful stuff, as it shows how Silco really has become a father figure to Jinx.
I actually think (prepare for overexaggerated theory) that when echo was chuckling and then he started swinging his watch like he did when they were younger, I think he was testing jinx on whether she remembered how they used to play, almost as if he was seeing if there is still a bit of powder in there, a bit of hope left. I say this because he is the one who initiated the sequence.
So glad you were paying so much attention to the faces here! I feel like Ekko's and Jinx's expressions before their fight say so much without a word, and perfectly set up their tragic clash. I'd argue the music, animation, choreography, cinematography, and character work are in near-perfect concert to make this fight one of the hardest-hitting scenes of the season! Stoked for the rest of Act 3!
@@JamesVSCinema what makes the fight scene even cooler is that the time rewind part of it is actually a nod to ekko's time travel abilities in the game.
My favorite moment in the series is that Jinx vs Echo fight.. you can just feel the history and weight between those two in that sequence. Coinciding with that animation stylistic change with some Denzel Curry just elevated it that much more. Excited to hear your thoughts!
Loved the Ekko vs. Jinx scene...probably watched it 50 times by now! I can't take full credit for this but somebody else summed up what happened at the end of that fight PERFECTLY. Ekko was convinced that Powder was gone; Jinx killed her and she is all that is left but after he busted her up and was about to throw that last punch...he stopped. He stopped because for that brief moment, he saw Powder again and Powder saw him back. The emotion that is written all over both of their faces at that exact moment is heart wrenching! Knowing what she's done and who she's become, she'd rather die with him than continue to fight. I don't know who the writers are for this show but they deserve a standing ovation! The design and animation teams get a lot of recognition; rightfully so, but the writers deserve just as much!
Ekko's whole deal with Jinx is he loves Powder, and in game he has a hex time device and his whole deal is saving her even while Jinx is still a thing. It's a great storyline.
An underrated moment I always appreciate is the scene between Sevika and Silco where he is worried about Jinx. Sevika has made it clear that there is no love lost between her and Jinx but still admits that she relates to Jinx given her own complicated relationship with her own father. And with that gives Silco what equates to parental advice and reassurance, giving an extra dimension to the mob boss/henchwoman dynamic.
When you mentioned Joey Bada$$ I immediately thought of Mr. Robot. He is in that show and I think this is definitely a show you should react to if you have not seen already. Not many reactors cover it and it is INCREDIBLE. Highly recommend it if you are into mind bending TV shows.
That fight scene between Ekko and Jynx has to be one of the coolest and most emotional scenes I've seen in animation! It managed to be fun, unique, and heartbreaking all at the same time while also giving us insight into their relationship in the past. I'm so glad you decided to watch this show on the channel it has been a lot of fun to rewatch and hear your thoughts!
The bridge scene is up at the top of the most emotional scenes of this show for me. Not only is the song SO amazing and the play has so much energy... but it's incredibly heartbreaking to see these childhood friends facing off. And the life they should have lead. I highly recommend watching the music video for Enemy at this point, as it enhances everything that's happened up to this point.
My favorite aspect is the emotion it invokes in me. I can rave about all the individual parts, but just how it's all composed together consistently has me invested, how I feel my body tense up in a warm rage during scenes like Vander winding back his hand to punch Deckard in ep 3, or feeling the breath leave my body and have cold chills when Jinx lit up the flare last episode. How emotionally fucking drained I feel after each act's finale. Like, it's a show being so good it's *literally* breathtaking. They suck you in and plays you like a fiddle.
Say whatever you want about Silco, but there's no denying that he's a tough SoB. Just keeping his poise while breathing the same air that everybody else is choking on is one of the most bad ass things in this show. And this show is filled to the brim with bad ass moments.
The entire soundtrack is great, but 'Misfit Toys' and 'Dynasties & Dystopias" are both catchy fucking rap songs. MT is the song in Ekko's intro and D&D is the track playing during the Jinx/Ekko fight.
The full versions of all these songs are amazing too, and a number of them have other singers you didn't even get to hear in the in-show selection. The intro Misfit Toys song has a great hook about not playing with the misfit toys that vibes perfectly with the whole firelight theme. and Dynasties and Dystopia is up there in the running for best track in the ost for sure
You know, when you said you were starting this show, there were certain moments I couldn't wait for you to reach. The sequence on the bridge is one of those moments. As always - thanks for your reactions. It's fun to share such awesome stories!
There are a lot of absolutely amazing shows that have come out in television/streaming history. I am still unsure whether this isn't the best show ever produced. The way that intricate storytelling pays off with action sequences and hype moments like the end of this episode is truly incredible.
Hey man! Great reaction, this was my favorite episode in the show. Been waiting for you to get to this one. Also, I love that sweater, where'd you get it?
Good eye comparing that sequence to Dark, I didn't think of that! Dark was so deep and beautiful in a similar way, in that moment. That scene on the bridge is next level when it comes to connecting the past to the current chaos. I can't wait for your next reaction to arcane....*clicks on episode 8 react* 😁😎👉👉
I love how so many of the episodes bait you into celebrating the violence only to pull you right back into the reality of how dark this actually is. There are real consequences for the characters and that is use to subvert your expectations.
Movie suggestion: Super 8 (2011). Directed by J.J Abrams and produced by Steven Spielberg. Probably the most intense and suspenseful movie of the last decade (that's all I'll say, I recommend that you check it out). Great reaction btw.
I have to admit, I'm part of the camp that strongly prefers the originally scored music in this show to the featured modern songs... but even I have to give that scene on the bridge a pass.
