Today on Repairs101 I want to share with you 6 knots that I really believe that everyone should know how to tie. Now some people are under the mistaken idea that if you can't tie a knot you should just tie a lot. As funny and clever as that sounds it's really not the case. The best thing you can do is learn how to tie a proper knot and that's what I'm here to show you today.What I do here on Repairs101 is I teach skills and knot tying is a skill that absolutely everybody needs to know. And these knots will serve you well for the rest of your life.20 years ago I packed up my car and I left Toronto and headed for Vancouver. I headed out on my own to drive the 4400 kilometres to get here. I came here to work on the trees and, to sail. I got a place by the beach so I could leave my car at home and walk the 10 or 15 minutes it took to get to Granville Island where I could launch a boat and spend my day out sailing on English Bay..Simple half hitch: just make a loop and tuck it through itself. That's a simple half hitch. so a half hitch. this one's called a square knot, the idea is you have 2 ends: the left goes over the right and you make the twist and then the right goes over the left and you make the twist. And that's called a square knot. Left over right and then take the right over the left and that's a square knot. It's also referred to as a reef knot in sailing and it's used to reef sails. If you do it wrong, if you do left over right and then left over right again you'll get something called a granny the sheet bend is best used when you're trying to join two pieces of uneven rope -- one big piece, one small piece, say. The idea behind the sheet bend is --that alone is called a sheet bend and a sheet bend will hold. You can tow a boat with just that knot. if you're going to apply a really extreme load I would recommend that you take this and go around twice for what's called a double sheet bend. and again you can put a lot of load on that and when you're done it'll come apart nice and easy just by pulling on it like that. make a loop through it, bring the tail of the smaller piece through the loop, go around behind it, go underneath and that's a single but I'm going to go around again and underneath again and that is a double sheet bend. I'll just tuck it down for you there and that's what a double sheet bend would look like. bowline but I'll just show you anyway of course it's best used when you're trying to make a loop in the end of a rope. you need to make a bend in it like that and everybody knows the old story of course where the snake comes out of the hole and goes around the tree and goes back down into the hole again, and that gives you your classic bowline knot. take the end like that and make a loop in it like this, come up through, go around, go back down in through again and you've got a bowline.If you're going to rely on a half hitch knot to hold your horse or your boat, well I think they might get away on you. a clove hitch is going to be used when you need to lash a rope to say a post, a hitching post, a pole, you know the gunwale on a boat, a handrail or something, when you just need to tie something on to a pipe, say., that's a clove hitch. It's just an awesome knot. clove hitch, cross over to your right then cross over towards your left and then bring it up through the centre like that and you've got a clove hitch, which is a great knot for securing things quickly like your horse or your boat or what have you. imagine if you just wanted to tie loosely something to it then that's a really good use for the bowline. again the bowline you the snake come out of the hole, go around the tree and go back down the hole again and you've got a bowline.Now on the other hand if you do want a knot that tightens up try the backhand hitch need to lock this off with two half hitches one like that two like that. It looks I'll show you this is just an awesome knot and it tightens itself. The more load you put against it the tighter it becomes, and it won't let go. It's just a fantastic load knot called the backhand hitch. If you're attaching a ladder to your roof-rack on your car or something you might want to try this this is just a great knot called the backhand hitch. Just pass it through there like that when you come around this side you simply tie a half hitch, tie another half hitch to lock it up and there you have it..So now a good knot will untie really easily as opposed to a bad knot is very difficult to untie, sometimes it can't be untied. Sometimes you have to cut it. Sometimes you put it in a vise and you whack on it with a hammer and a crowbar...

About two weeks ago I was a complete knot tying ignoramus, and it is a skill I have wanted to learn so I came here, to youtube and found this video. My wife and I watched this a few times while practicing, (along with the truckers hitch video) and got the hang of these knots. It was very helpful as I recently returned from a trip of about two hundred miles to the Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha. To get all our stuff there we packed up our trailblazer and then made a package of a double stroller, a single stroller and a pack and play in a tarp, then put our package on top of the vehicle and tied it down. It didn't move an inch on this two and half hour drive at 70 MPH. So I just wanted to say thanks for improving my quality of life by giving me a good start in this skill.

I cannot believe I've wasted 44 years of my life fumbling around with nearly useless grannyknots ("if you can't tie a knot, tie a lot!" definitely defined my own practice) when it took me about five or ten minutes to learn three of these, which will suit every possible situation I will ever find myself in. His "backhand hitch" is a munter hitch finished off with two half hitches. The munter hitch is a useful knot. If finished off slightly differently it can be untied under load (look up "munter mule"). Also can be used as a sliding friction knot. If you're rock climbing and drop your belay device or descender you can rappel or belay with this knot.

I love knots. I learned some hundreds of them but I do remember only 20 of them so now I learn new knots I have never seen before even.
The way you demonstrate the sheet bend makes a knot which will fail under load. For a sheet bend to be secure the bitter ends of both lines *must* end up on the same side of the knot. That causes the knot to collapse slightly on itself under strain, making it self securing.
If the bitter ends go in opposite directions the knot will slip and come undone.

The working end of a bowline knot should never be on the outside of the knot. The knot could invert into a slip knot and cause great peril, or never become undone in the case of binding.
The first "bowline" is as you described, but then the second time he demonstrates it, it is correct. He doesn't seem to notice or know. I agree with you.

Thanks for reminding this old Boy Scout (who didn't pay a whole lot of attention during my knot class) of these knots. I do remember the bowline as a rabbit.
I utilize all of these knots and more in my profession as a Merchant Mariner, Knots are so useful and I didn't realize until i became a sailor.

Trying to learn knots, but is your sheet bend tied incorrectly??? I read this, Notice that, to have any strength, the two free ends should end up on the same side of the knot. Under even moderate load, a left-hand sheet bend will quickly slip and release completely. Just curious and trying to understsnd
mikedeanberry My sheet bend is a Left Handed Sheet Bend, as is one of my Bowlines (also called cowboy bowline and classic bowline). And I call an overhand knot a half-hitch. But I ain't had no book learnin of knots. If you read the comments you'll see I have addressed this many times before. For the record: I have used this knot under extreme loads and never seen it fail.
That said, you should do what your book says and write to them if you have any further problems.

Your sheet bend is wrong, or well, it is the insecure version (the "left-hand sheet bend").
According to Ashley's book of knots (which is, like, the bible of knots), pages #67 and #1432, the two short ends (thick and thin one) should end up on the same side. To achieve this, after putting the thinner rope through the bigger loop, move around the two strands starting IN THE DIRECTION OF THE SHORT BIG END. Going all the way around the two big strands and finally under itself will make the thin end come up at the correct side.
In your video, you go around on the opposide side, and the short thin end finally sticks out on the opposite side of the thick thin end. The result is a "left-hand sheet bend", which is supposedly more insecure when put under stress.
Nice video otherwise, wasn't familiar with the backhand hitch.

you are doing the clove hitch wrong............... close but wrong.....
loop around the pole 1.... cross over the firs rope and loop around again 2..... NOW, you loop OVER that top 2 rope and then go under the 1 rope..... it makes it so that the pulling load is directly pinching the tail to the pole.... great vid
calholli That wouldn't make a Clove Hitch, it'd make a Constricter Knot, which is definitely superior to the Clove Hitch. However, what he tied was an actual Clove Hitch.

I was a Boy Scout. They taught me respect for nature and wildlife, self sufficiency and to do a good turn for somebody every day.

so at the begining of this video, he showed a Overhand Knot, and then he tie up with something with a Half Hitch afterward...
Okay, so even by your own description, (which is quite accurate.) "if the rope is around something first and then tied up, it's a HALF HITCH"... He, (as you stated,) didn't do that, or explain that. What he tied was an Overhand Knot, Not a half hitch. I am not referring to what he did later. I was specifically referring to what he tied at the beginning of the video @ 1:22 he tied an Overhand Knot, then called it a Half Hitch. Perhaps some would say I am being a tad "pedantic". However, people can end up using knots for very critical tasks. It pays to be very specific when dealing with rope. IMHO.
Yes - the same structure but the name changes (as everyone here already knows). The name has to change, as the Overhand Knot is the fundamental form of the Double Overhand Knot. The Double Overhand and the Half Hitch are both extremely widely used so both terms are a necessity.
Anyone out there who really knows knots and prepared to upload a video?

Crimson Armada Thanks for commenting! I should add that since producing this video a lot of people have corrected me when I call an "overhand knot" a half-hitch. Having done some checking I see they are correct as the overhand knot becomes a half hitch once it is belayed to something. Still, everyone I ever encountered called it a half hitch (Canadian, eh?) and a knot by any other name should tie just as sweet. The other issue viewers seem passionate about is my showing a classic / left handed / cowboy bowline followed by the standard bowline - which I thought would satisfy everyone but is clearly offensive to some viewers. Who knew filmmaking would be so controversial?

"Knot tying is a skill everybody needs to know" I agree. Yet nowadays very few people do. I work in a trade you would think guys would know even basic knots. You should see the nightmares they come up with. I tie a flipping standard bowline and they stand back in awe like I'm some kind of wizard. It's sad. Ha! I happen to be in Vancouver too.

Thanks so much! I used the backhand hitch to repair the holes in my hay nets. $3.99 in nylon cord saved me over $100 on new nets. I've never seen that knot before, and it is much more stable than square knots. It's kind of a fun knot, too; I didn't even mind practicing!

Repairs101 basic fire fighter knots...clove hitch....figure 8 family.....munter hitch....butterfly... and the knots you have covered.....10 years as a fire fighter....2 years as a rescue tech..1 year tree trimmer. good video...a knot is not tied unless you have safety....life safety
347firedude Thanks Firedude! I will be researching this (thanks again Curtis) and trying to get a real live firefighter to guest host the video but I should point out that it takes me months to develop a story because of my backlog of already started projects (WIPs - works in progress)
As a rock climber/tree surgeon/ rope user, the true Bowline does require that the tail is inside, not outside. The dynamics of the "nip' or locking part makes the standing part of the true bowline bear on the tail not the loop, and it cushions it so it doesn't strain the loop. Ya gotta remember, on right handed tying, that the rabbit comes out of the hole and goes around the tree to the right.
I know that's geeky and overtech, but it's a reason to tie it right. Knots are beautiful.

I (and everyone I've ever worked with ) have always called these knots half hitches but looking into various books I see that an overhand knot becomes a half hitch when it is belayed to something ( a ring or a spar...). But a knot by any other name should tie just as sweet.

It's worth noting that the orientation of the loop in the bowline is important (i.e. which direction it spirals). I always hold the standing end in my left palm and with my right hand holding the tag, I throw a bit of line around my left hand fingers, which creates the proper loop.
Also, they call the backhand hitch a Munter hitch when you don't lock it off with a second hitch. You can use it to belay or rappel at a cost to your rope's longevity.

Good video. Thought it worth mentioning that the first part of the backhand hitch is also known as a munter hitch and is used in climbing and rappelling. If it is tied off it is usually done so with a mule tieoff. As for the clove hitch, I have found that it can work loose if there is inconsistent pressure on the knot; in cases where you would use the clove hitch but do not want it to work loose from varying pressure (such as wind on a sail or a tarp) then tie a constrictor knot instead. The constrictor knot is a clove hitch, but then you wrap the working end around the standing end of the rope, making the "two inner loops" of the clove hitch in an "x" shape rather than parallel lines. It gives the knot much more holding power.
