- A man has appeared in court charged with the murder of Irish teacher Ashling Murphy.
Ms Murphy, a primary school teacher in her 20s, was killed while jogging by the Grand Canal in Tullamore last Wednesday afternoon.
Josef Puska was remanded in custody at Cloverhill Prison after a brief hearing.
The 31-year-old was heckled as he was brought from a police car to Tullamore District Court in County Offaly on Wednesday evening.
A second man arrested in the murder investigation has been released without charge.

Many of them left dublin social housing to Longford, Tullamore, Roscomonn area as the state provided cheaper and more available houses for them there after Dublin became more and more expensive. It does not mean they are all criminals - this crime was committed by one sick individual and we shouldn't blame all roma people and non-nationals for his actions. Ashling was not only valued member of society. She was a hero. It looks like she resisted the rapist, inflicting him injuries. Some men wouldn't be able to defend themselves at all. I have a schoolmate who preferred to change his name for Baláž (higher caste, much better integrated) when he married. I grew up alongside the gypsies - some of them helped my father when he was building our house. My mother knew some gypsy family who were happy to receive a secondhand clothes or furniture from us. Sometimes there was occasional theft in the village, illegal cutting of wood in the forest, but nothing major. Once they stole our dog puppy and my father returned with puppy in the evening (he found it chained in one gypsy's yard). Some of my classmates were gypsies...Now, the chief of our village is a roma gypsy guy and he is a decent person. Yes, the EU has been unfairly criticising the slovak's attitude towards gypsies while the slovak government have been building lots of housing for them, trying to help, but you cannot change a gypsy's mentality in relation to getting a work or a proper education. And it has been really hard to find a work even for a 'white' slovak people since we left communism and entered a new democratic regime in the early 90s. Do not forget how gypsies were treated during the WW2 - sending them together with jews to concentration camps.

He is a Slovak, and that absolutely does not mean that all Slovakians are like him, but you can't change the fact that he was allowed into our country regardless of whether or not he had serious personal or mental health issues. He was not a productive member of society in either case, and at the time of his arrest was living on disability benefits. Why should we let people like this into our country? For what he has done to that poor girl and her family he deserves nothing less than the ultimate punishment.

As regards murders, and killings in general, Ireland does not exactly have an unblemished record. Indeed some of the murders have been as gruesome as the killing of Aisling Murphy.

Men get murdered by other men. This is an issue of male violence, and cases like this - where a man feels entitled to take the life of a woman he sees on the street - is the extreme end of this problem, and why it gets the headlines. Men have to address the problem of violence in their own communities because it's killing them too.

Can anyone explain to me what charged means? Is it that there is evidence and they can keep him till the trial?
Police investigate, the CPS press charges and the court determines whether they are guilty of those charges.
He is kept in jail until his trial unless he gets granted bail. I doubt he will get granted bail. He will be on 23 hour lock up in Clover Hill Prison until his trial, which I'd say will be around this time next year. When he gets sentenced to Life, he will go to a jail or a prison that has a special protection wing for rapists and paedophiles like him. He will spend at least 15 years in prison and more likely around 20 years. Dirt.

@@Emtrax. it means the police believe that there is sufficient evidence, that he committed a crime, so keep him detained to take him to court.
Given the pace at which he has been captured and charged, they have more than enough DNA evidence to put him at the scene of the crime
BTW hate mob, seen some comments about immigrants and foreigners and all that crap. Do all these people not realise that we, a tiny island, are and always will be IMMIGRANTS. We've been doing it hundreds of years and continue to do so today. It is ridiculous to think that Ireland would have a problem with immigration, we practically invented it. And it's also horrible that Poland seems to have forgotten their history too, hundreds of Afghans who've had to sell their kidneys to get to the edge of Europe only to be drenched in water by another country of Immigrants. IRISH and POLISH need to rethink what running from terror is like
