Very helpful and I like your description of how you use the micro loop with your pre-done rigs. I will definitely try this on my setup. In your videos you describe a method and then show us how to use it. Nice.
Hello Mr. Croston. I just received my August /September issue of Flyfisherman and thoroughly enjoyed the profile of your methods for success on stream. Then I went searching for you on RUclips, and here you are. My common sense tells me you have it (your bio) so as they say, "I'm on board". I hope I find how you put that leader together.
Awesome stuff Howard. When using a euro line...is it smooth through the guides or do you feel it get hung up a little? Currently I use a needle nail. Thanks
Yes - if you make the loop and thread whipping small and neat enough it’s fairly smooth . There is a smoother connection I will do in another video but it’s not as versatile .
Awesome. Thanks Howard! One question: what is the knot you use to attach leader to loop? You mentioned an untucked blood knot, but searching the net, I don't find it. Could you explain more about this knot? Thanks much, Toney
Hi Ollie, I come from a coarse match fishing background, look at the Matrix small EVA hook length storage system. They do a large as well but the small should be enough for fly fishing leader storage. These are pretty much the same as the one Howard's shows us on the RUclips clip.
Hello Howard, at the end of your video you explain how to attach the leader to the fly micro loop and I am trying to understand what you are saying , are you saying "untuck blood" knot? I am not familiar with this knot. Is there a video or demonstration of this knot that you are using? Thank you .......
Excellent Howard. Would you recommend micro connections on floating braided fly lines for Stillwater's, or is this connection what you would use mainly on rivers?
@@howardcrostonflyfisher9227 Howard, thank you for this. I'm curious why you prefer putting braided loops on your stillwater lines rather than making a loop from the braided core of the fly line as you demonstrated in this video. Thank you. Cheers.
Howard, For your stillwater lines, when you install the braided loops you've made, how far up the fly line does your braided material go? Do you install the braided loop assembly over the coated fly line, or do you remove the coating and install the braided loop assembly on the core (braided or mono)? Thanks. Cheers,
Hi - I make a braided loop and fit as normal over the fly line coating and whip in place and glue - normally about 2” of fly line inside the loop . I don’t make exposed core loops in my still water lines as I predominantly use Airflo low stretch sinking lines and the low stretch core is a multifilament that doesn’t loop well .
@@howardcrostonflyfisher9227 Howard, Thank you for your reply. Got it. When you are using the "flying bobbin" technique of whipping on the tying thread, do you run the tying thread the full length of the 2" and slightly beyond onto the line coating to create a smooth transition? If so, where do you apply the glue? BTW, I have whipped micro tippet rings on to the end of several of my fly lines and never really paid attention to the possibility of them catching in the guides on the way out. But, I just did a test and---sure enough---they do catch. Not always, but enough that I will be cutting them off and replacing them with the small loops you demonstrated (at least for those lines that have braided cores). Thanks for pointing out this issue with the micro tippet rings---you're spot on!! Also, I was about to buy an SA Comp Nymph line, but I see it is Mono core, so I may defer to the Braided Core version of the Cortland Comp Nymph line, although I otherwise prefer the SA one. I guess I could put a braided loop on the SA Mono core Nymph line, but not sure I want that on a Euro-Nymph setup. Too bad you've found that the Mono core can slip when doing the Whipped Loop technique. Again, thanks.
Howard, Oops, one more question. Some of the SA lines use what they describe as "Braided Multifilament Core" (others use a Mono core). Do you know if the exposed core loop technique will work well with that core, or is it like the multifilament core in the AirFlo lines that doesn't work well with that technique? Again, thanks. Cheers,
Hi Howard, Excellent video, thanks for sharing some really good tips on setting up your Fly Rods and Leaders. Regards, Wayne 😀👍
Very helpful thank you. The coating didn’t come off cleanly when I tried it but acetone nail varnish remover did the rest.

Great video Howard...very helpful and practical... thanks for sharing.
Great fella , thanks for your time.
Great to see a top angler sharing info and tips. well presented and easy to follow.
One of the most useful videos I've seen, and seems way easier than the Chinese fingertrap splice.
Thanks for taking the time Howard. Some good tips here. Cheers.
Brilliant stuff ,u explain things nice and simple

Great insight Howard thanks for sharing.
That great to see how you do it, thanks

Hi Tony , it’s just a half blood - create a loop , wrap the tag around the main line 6 times and pass the the tag through the loop .
Thanks for the good video, do you know where your friend brought the spool box from?
Thanks

Hello Howard, what brand of a wading jacket would you recommend. Nothing too heavy... Thanks
How long you’d do these pre leaders I call them for quick change of your actual leaders minimum and maximum ?

Just a clinch or “untucked blood” .

Mainly the rivers but you could use it on the lakes if you wanted .

Shannon York I just whip about 5-6mm at the end of the braid and glue that .

Uni-Thread furled leader are your friend. :)
Personally I dislike Furled leaders , mainly due to the spray they throw . I have tried them a number of times previously. Just a personal preference.
What sort of core does super dry elite airflo have would that suite the micro loop
I think they are the multifilament cores from memory so not ideal.
@@howardcrostonflyfisher9227 yea your right they will do for a while, thank you
