I know everyone roasting the judges but which one is the bad call. Only one I see that is missed is the clear men for Japan and guy raises the weird side kote flag? Anything else i missed. Men at the end and the Hiki Kote are both in. Maybe there is one kote from red that could be called?

What do you know? Judging an ippon through a video like this is Impossible.
However it is visible that the shinai reached its targets for hoshiko.
No other strike did. So solid judging here. The quality of the given ippon is hard to evaluate because we dont have the natural sound.

@@Corey91666sure doesnt mean we cant question the legitimacy of the shinpans for this wkc. After seeing the way they acted during the teams final many people share the sentiment that this years shinpans underperformed by a large margin.

@@ban6456 that is a huge generalization and shows that a broad mass usually holds no actual knowledge to properly judge a performance.
Yes the shushin (main ref) in the finals fucked up. He did. However i dont know if you ever judged a kendo shiai yourself. Let alone the most competitive team match there is. The strikes are insanely fast, the techniques advanced, you get unusual situation due to super high intensity. Its very tough. Doesnt help when people watching with 0 knowledge start to shout at you.
Also korea is highly emotional in these wkcs which is not always good. They try to heavily influence shinpan decisions with exegerated behaviour and mannerism.
The only obvious underperformance was the shushin in team finals because he tried to be uber correct and not make the mistakes of the last final. In the end he made it worse.
But 1 thing needs to be kept in mind in kendo. "Wrong" decisions regarding ippon are part of the game as a) rules allow certain things and b) kendo is super fast and sometimes only 1 shinpan can clearly see what is going on.

@@Corey91666 i would not give such a benefit of doubt for such high level shushi. My sensei Shozo Kato sensei always says that nanadans at that level are expected to be shinpans of high degree and demonstrate competence in a consistent manner. Throughout the matches there was not much consistency and as such it can be expected that this years wkc was not of as quality. If we were talking about regional tournaments regarding this then yes what you are saying is fair. At the wkc, this is way too much leeway. Also the korean team had a right to act the way they did considering how biased things were against them. If it was at the level you are saying they would have most definitely got an hansoku.

@@ban6456 did you ever follow all japan kendo championships?
Its the most competitive kendo tournament refereed by japanese hachidan only.
Yet you will find a bunch of things per tournament were a decision is at the very least discusable. From kote strikes that got awarded hitting the arm to men ippon that slightly miss their target etc.
The biggest problem imo regarding shinpaning in wkc is that these nanadans dont watch enough japanese tournaments. This would actually help them to get a better feeling for the flow of the shiai.
However usually abroad people take japanese advice as a rules written in Stone that have to be followed word by word (and for that manner usually what they heard is translated).
This leads to a high ranking shushin that tries to be too correct on the advanced rules regarding tsubazeriai. From wanting them to split in a constant manner without stops (as written in the rules) or penalizing a kenshi for closing the distance in a defensive, blocking manner. In the end what they are missing is context.
Also i wouldnt judge the quality of a whole tournament based on a final Team match. Its a huge generalization. If you didnt participate yourself its kind of impossible to judge. And even then it could be 1 shiai jo were 1 shinpans keeps doing funny things so you would have to be there for the whole 4 days and doing and watching shiai to a full picture.
Regarding korean team. They are absolutely superb but they dont behave in the spirit of kendo and as long as they do there will be certain bias. The korean team constantly abuses certain things to get an advantage over japan. Most notably they keep falling to avoid getting pushed out of the shiai jo or to reset difficult situations. And yes i have seen the "slippery" floor but i am 100% sure they use these tactics.
Korea will eventually beat japan. That is certain but the more honest they play and behave the more likely they will get rewarded. However 1 thing needs to be understood about Japan. There is no place on earth other than japan to become the very best a person can be at kendo.
