Family friends with a few prominent people in the WNBA &the unwritten rule was that you don't get pregnant, that's something you do after your playing career. And if you're not a star, you aren't playing into your late 30's so it kind of takes care of itself. Most women also play overseas so they virtually have no off-season. Those women can't get pregnant &play basketball, if they want to have a baby they would need to take a year off &it was up to the team if they paid them or not. Like anything talent plays a major part in whether an organization will support you during your pregnancy. Coach is correct on this one but its morally and depending on how stated legally wrong as well. Pay the fine/damages and move on - at this point its still better for the team to move on from the player period. the question at this point is not if but what the cost will be. This reminds me of car recalls - Yeah the company should just halt production and remove the line but its more cost effective to sale the fleet and pay damages if needed.

If you work at a good job in corporate america, your job will give you months off paid leave to have a baby. They will then sometimes offer some additional time off unpaid if you need to take longer. This is wrong for an organization or coach to do and you can definitely sue.
You can’t compare pregnancy to a sports injury. Most sports injuries don’t take you 10-12 months to heal. You have 9 months of being pregnant than another 2 months for recovery than another 3 months to get in basketball shape.

Pregnacy is an off court issue, if an injury happens while u playing in a non nba event, u will not get paid.
