CORRECTIONS AND Q'S A'ed:
1. NIXON WAS NEVER ACTUALLY IMPEACHED. He resigned. Articles of impeachment passed out of committee, but he resigned before the impeachment vote. MY MISTAKE.
2. Why didn't you talk about Ukraine's support of Hillary Clinton? This is a good and interesting question. There is some evidence that Ukraine's government sought to influence the election for Clinton (although it was not nearly as extensive as the meddling by the government of Russia). But as I say in the video, benefiting from a propaganda campaign is not a crime, and no evidence has emerged that any Clinton staffers received or accepted any "thing of value." So I didn't talk about it because it wasn't the topic of the video.
3. Why didn't you talk about the incredibly coincidental timing of "later in the summer" and Trump asking Russia to release Clinton's 33,000 emails? Okay, so lots of people believe that it's not a coincidence that Donald Trump Jr. said "later in the summer" and then the DNC emails were indeed released later in the summer, and that it's not a coincidence that (then-candidate) Trump asked Russia to release Clinton's emails very shortly after the meeting between the Kremlin-connected Lawyer and Manafort/Kushner/Donald Trump Jr. And maybe it isn't a coincidence, but it seems perfectly possible to me that it IS a coincidence.
4. Did you ignore evidence that Putin wasn't behind the DNC hack? Not to my knowledge. The sources I link to above are very convincing. I think it's important to remember here that there is VERY BROAD CONSENSUS across political parties among U.S. leaders that the Russian government was behind the DNC hack, as well as the other facets of their campaign to influence the election. They've seen information that we don't have, and they ALL consider it to be credible. If there were more Republicans saying, "Wait a minute," as was the case with Democrats and the intelligence about WMD in Iraq, I'd be more hesitant. As it is, I think it's just a very inconvenient fact for a lot of people's political narratives that Putin decided whose emails we got to read in the runup to the 2016 U.S. Presidential election.
5. Why didn't you mention Carter Page or Roger Stone or et cetera? Because the video was already nine minutes long, and also because most of the people you're asking about left Trump's official campaign relatively early on. It's important to remember that these days a LOT of U.S. political consultants do business abroad. I don't think in and of itself that should be a red flag.
6. John Podesta was the chairman of Clinton's campaign, not of the DNC. MY MISTAKE.
7. Why didn't you talk about Trump drafting the untrue initial press release for Donald Trump Jr? There's reporting about this here: www.nytimes.com/2017/08/01/us/politics/trump-was-involved-in-drafting-sons-statement-aide-confirms.html Some people think this is a crime (likely obstruction of justice), but it seems a stretch to me. They made the meeting to be about adoption; it's perfectly possible that adoption was mentioned. That doesn't strike me as a likely crime. If we put every politician or businessperson in prison who massaged the truth in a press release, our incarceration rate would be very high, indeed.
I'll add more answers (and corrections, I'm sure) as they come in. Thanks for watching. -John
vlogbrothers Comey wrote a letter stating Clinton wasn't being charged before she was interviewed and 15 others....hmm
vlogbrothers
1)Podesta was not head of DNC, Donna Brazile and Debbie wasserman Shultz were.
2) FBI NEVER LOOKED AT DNC EMAILS!! Debbie wasserman Shultz stated Comey and jen Johnson LIED UNDER OATH REQUESTIng them!!!
3) Comey admitted under oath Trump NEVER ASKED HIM TO STOP THE INVESTIGATION!!!
4) crowdstrike is run by Ukraine company and Ukrainians also behind fake dossier with fusion GPS
5) Brennan clapper Comey grassley Feinstein all said trump was not under investigation and there was no evidence of collusion. They said this under oath and after closed senate intelligence committees
6) jeh Johnson told secretaries of states 3x, August September and October that there was no evidence of Russian interference.
7) the local hacking has been shown it came from DHS IP addresses and not foreign.
8) VIPs have determined DNC emails were leaked not hacked.
DO A VIDEO ON THE REAL Story!!
vlogbrothers great video, love your work. When is russian translation of turtles all the way down coming out? I can help with translation, free of charge.
I am a person who was involved in Russian politics and I guarantee that if they believe it is possible to influence election and get away with it, they will.
Btw, our "Parliament" stood and applauded when they heard the results of us elections. True story, lol.
Kudos on not doubling down on misspoken statements like certain Presidents...
2. The FBI did look at the emails (they were readily available), what they did not do was examine the DNC's physical servers which stored the emails. As such, the forensic proof that it was "hacked by Russia" comes entirely from CrowdStrike's analysis.
3. Comey also made clear that while Trump did not directly ask, he believed the implications from what Trump did say were very clear.
4. CrowdStrike is not "run by a Ukrainian company". One of it's founders (Dmitri Alperovitch) is a member of a think tank (Atlantic Council) that received funding from Victor Pinchuk, a Ukranian billionaire.
5. Correct, they said they'd seen no evidence of collusion. But that is suffixed by a hard "yet", as Mueller's investigation hadn't even started yet.
6. Jeh Johnson only gave testimony that they had no evidence that actual votes had been tampered with by Russia. He validated the idea that Russia was actively attempting to do so and that "scale and scope of what we say them doing was unprecedented."
7. This has not been shown by anyone.
8. I'm not sure who you're calling a "VIP", but if that is what they determined, they are at odds with the FBI, intelligence community, and our Congress.
This comment section is going to be great and everyone is going to get along just fine.

Americans interfering in the elections and internal affairs of virtually every single nation on the face of this good earth: Zero problems
Some other country MAYBE TRIED to interfere in American elections: *surprised pikachu*
Well, there actually are non-zero problems - but not in the U.S., but in those other nations. The point is: accepting foreign help in your campain is illegal, helping others isn't.

that's what the defense lawyers will be doing, yes.
It might end up being pretty clear. The potential criminal act here, if any, would be someone in the Trump campaign coordinating directly a specific tactic with the Russian government. This is essentially analogous to the current law on superPACs. These can exist because there's nothing illegal (per the Supreme Court) about private citizens spending as much money as they'd like producing political speech; they cannot, however, directly contribute infinite amount of money to political campaigns. This extends to coordinating directly with those campaigns to, eg, produce a specific series of TV ads, because in doing so you are essentially performing the same function as advertising within the campaign, but not charging the campaign for it. This is clearly a "thing of value". Other potential crimes would be criminal conspiracies anyway, like being involved in the Podesta hacking or not disclosing knowledge of the hacking prior to it's public release.
John I just want to thank you again, as a conservative, for how unbiased your reports on current events are. It is often quite difficult for me to learn much about what's going on in the world without a STRONG liberal or conservative bias on the telling of the events and sharing of information.

It's still gonna be liberally biased
There I not that much more info i mean the Muller report came out but they had basically made everything public when it happened so there was not really any new info except that the investigation is over with only unrelated arrest so since it is still " innocent until proven guilty" 2 years and $25,000,000 later that's pretty much an exoneration

Oh boy... Here we go with the Comment Section.....
i come back to this video every couple months. oh boy.
Watching this video and looking through the comments I'm reminded that we seem to find ourselves living in a world where we can rarely agree on what a "fact" is, let alone what they might mean or come to some general sense of agreement in terms of opinion. With so many possible sources out there for news consumption with often wildly disparate biases and reporting practices, it seems that conversation with others of a differing political tilt than me often comes to a grinding halt because we have such different sets of information that we're working with. I was hoping that in a future vlogbrothers video you or Hank would share your thoughts on this problem and any ideas you have for overcoming it. I do my best to only use news sources that I've actively researched their biases, and even then I try and look at multiple sources from multiple angles. Though I'll admit, I don't always succeed at that and have been sucked into click-bait and pandering sources plenty of times. But when I do manage, it seems to help. However I can still get overwhelmed and depressed when my actions fail to make it easier to converse with people of an opposing viewpoint because we are still getting such completely different information on these divisive topics. Thanks for taking on the topic of Trump and Russia and devoting so much time and research to it, it was so well done! Thanks for opening up the discussion below. And as always, thanks for making me think and examine the world we live in!

If there's one conclusion to be made its that we need more transparency in politics. I don't like the idea of men and women in backrooms strategizing on how to change the world without the knowledge and inclusion of the people who will be affected.

"It's a whole nothing burger."
with the corrections comment, I find this a fair view. Sadly always pains me when everyone is "guilty until proven innocent" instead of "innocent until proven guilty" ... I can't count how many people I've seen while in jury selections that outwardly seem to just accept no evidence and "he looks guilty" or "we're here he has to be guilty" type sentiment (not usually that direct, but you can tell in the way questions are answered)... I surely hope it is purely people trying to get out of jury duty.... as guilty until proven innocent is really a very bad system. Sadly I have seen far too many people younger than me actually promoting that type of view ("believe"). Don't miss understand, I am not a huge fan of trump... and there are a lot of behaviors that concern me. But it just feels lately that people are not actually taking time to think complexly. Especially as it seems more and more that, especially media, is trying to paint sides as black or white and leaves people in the middle being batted on both sides.

The idea that we should believe this story because there is "overwhelming agreement not just U.S within intelligence circles but also among both Republican and Democratic members of congress" is a flawed argument on two fronts.
First, the intelligence community has no obligation to tell the truth and there is an overwhelming amount of evidence to not only support that but the fact that on many occasions the intelligence community have lied to the American people.
Second, the agreement of members of congress is purely political. We're talking about Pro-Establishment politicians vs. Anti-Establishment politicians. Not saying that DJT is anti-establishment in the sense that he is not a corporatist but he clearly is not on the same side as John McCain.
I'm so ready for turtles all the way down! 🐢💙

Good video, John. Gave a level of nuance necessary for a topic this complicated and emphasized yhe importance of looking at the facts
I know your a lefty so I was hesitant to watch, but great video glad I did. Just laid out what we know.
Same thought crossed my mind, but I figured he couldn't be worse than the shill ass MSMs.
It is very unfortunate our so-called "free press" is in the state it is in.
Stalin would cream his pants if he was alive to see what we've done to the "news".
This is my biggest problem. How in the hell do you use a term like "thing of value" in legal context without it bwing defined?
Can you make a updated version of this video?
Remember, interfering with the governments of other countires is only ok if you are the US
please bring attention to Puerto Rico!!!!!
Is this why your email was accessed by a foreign government as per your recent video?
LOL. Is the dossier a "thing of value" even if it was paid for by an opposing political party...(3:20ish). Hindsight eh?
This aged like milk.
forget the word 'collusion', Mueller found 10 instances of Trump obstructing justice (which is impeachable). Now Trump's been impeached for completely different reasons (related to his idiocy mixed with his amorality).
@@zenon3021 lol okay dude
@@soyusmaximus7176 do you even care about facts? The bulk of Mueller's report focused on obstruction of justice:
"10 episodes where Trump might have obstructed justice"
www.politico.com/story/2019/04/18/mueller-report-transcript-trump-obstruction-justice-1281245
@vlogbrothers is there anyway you could make an updated video about the new information that has developed over the past 4 months?
Well this didn't age well
8:40 "Future of our democracy." That's a funny joke.
For the record: Even if Trump didn't collude with Russia, he would've still won. Trump didn't win because of Putin's involvement, he won because he says what a shit-ton of Americans are thinking and want, and liberals and others that focus so much on the Russia case need to face that fact.
"our democracy"...
Haha that's funny.
Damn you watch CNN and MSNBC every night dont you
they do love that garbage.
I wonder if this video is being demonetized?
Hey Hank & John, can you talk about the DNC and what Clinton did during the primaries? Its getting next to no coverage, and even a little awareness would be good for the united states. (vote up, if you think its worth them seeing this :)
8:43 Oh, no John, I know how this is going to end. "I resign the presidency of the United States of America, effective...".
Scott J oh really? How’d that work out for you libtard? 🤡🤡🤡
Acquitted for life !
8:39 - 8:50
I really appreciate you acknowledging its significance. Mr. Green.
My daughter told the teacher at the brainwashing school that " Russia hacked her laptop and deleted her homework"!!
"When candidate Y doesn't release their tax returns"
I see what you did there, John. Well played.
Yes this idiot wants you to believe there is something there.. because he does.. when you assume.
This is my favourite type of content. I have long thought that a "for Dummies" style of synopsis for current events just might be very useful for understanding the bigger picture on lots of issues. Traditional news outlets often treat a breaking story as having come out of nowhere. It is not until an issue has completely boiled over that any dots are even presented, for folks to grapple with the full impact of whatever is going on, and in my opinion this usually happens on late night TV, so, entertaining, but not necessarily factual or unbiased. I must admit that I am a lazy consumer of news, and sometimes need to be reminded how we already know the different characters & problems who are currently occupying the jouralistic spotlight.
9 minutes that made me more informed than the months of trying to follow along with this story.
Are you ready to make a new Russia/election video now? :)
With all the indictments, Bannon/Trump infighting, and the general shitshow? Yes, please!
Even now, unfortunately, there is still barely enough new information to warrant a new video. Without some sort of bombshell, don't expect a new video until the mueller investigation releases a report.
Dear John, you could mention a TINY bit, that USA has a hundred year history of meddling in other countries elections, including Russia. What mr Putin did, was returning a favor...
Brilliant synopsis, I thank you for your unbiased clarity.
So, now that we know that it was actually the FBI and Clinton‘s campaign… rather than Prez Trump … what do you think?
I freakin love you guys. Crash Course is awesome, you guys are awesome.
No collusion. Silly video.
@J W .. Date of this VIDEO: SEPTEMBER 2017. Have you heard it was found that the Democrats and the Bidens colluded with Ukraine? Money was transferred to the Clinton's foundation.
Aged well 🤭🤭🤭
Can you update this after the durham report
This hasn't aged well. Maybe it's time to delete it.
