I feel like something that was failed to be mention was was the box Rina came in. BT11 was one of the worst boxes providing common and uncommon foil. Causing lots of people not buying the box hence making alt of cards in that box more expensive than they should be. I believe if it a normal box it would ar the least cut her price in half.
The foil common/uncommon foiling was something I definitely liked. However, the overall execution was something that many players did not like for the fact that it skewed their rares. Personally, I feel that the events of foiling common/uncommons were independent of the secret rare pull rates. But at the same time, I do think that depending on when sets were ordered, it could be a reasoning for why less product was opened.
If they would have added a new slot for the pack for that foiling of the lower rarities it would have been better though. Them taking the rare slot for it really hurt.
Great video as always! I'm in the camp that secrets should not be generic in order to keep the game accessible to as many people as possible. However, I do appreciate that Bandai reprinted DeathX and (probably) Ruin Mode so that people have a 2nd chance to get those more generic secrets.
Definitely! I think with reprints for DeathXmon (albeit it's in December) coming, it does give newer players accessibility. I tend to lean more on the collector side of things and can see why players would want more value for their cards. The downside is, availability becomes the issue.
SEC should be guaranteed 1 per box, both in BT and EX, and then alt-arts should be their usual 2 in BT and 3 in EX in addition, it makes it a little easier to get into decks that have SECs in them while still having the alt-arts to encourage selling boxes.
I like what EX sets do where you have 3 alt arts and the chance for a secret. Always feels good opening an alt secret at least. And with our Special Booster 2.0 set looking moderately heavy on alt arts I don't want want to have to deal with skewed pull rates.
I'm fine with the pull rates for SECs in most sets, but I hope they are more used for specific decks so they don't get too expensive (Ruin Mode/DeathXmon).
I am fine with splashable secret rares being a bit pricey (30-40) with more valuable alternate arts. But after a year, anything over 50$ should be reprinted to keep the game affordable. Shinegreymon Ruin Mode being 80+$ is out here thinking he's is a MtG or YuGiOh card.
I agree on that. It reminds me of back when I played cardfight vanguard in the G era and School Etoile Olyvia, a Bermuda Triangle GR came out. She was splashable in every Bermuda deck but, to use her, you needed 2 or 4 copies in the deck. And then she got a $200 alt art on top of that. Fortunately, in the next Bermuda set, she was a box topper reprint.
Reprints are another large problem in the card game - whether it be promos or secrets that you need, making the generally available has been difficult. This is why I loved BT14 so much with the training cards. Imagine having to open 4 boxes to get potentially even one playset.
I fully understand that, for the game to continue, it has to sell. Making cards difficult to get makes people buy more product, same as making them good. So, the hard to swallow truth is that I find it necessary. Do I personally like it? Hell no. As someone who doesn't like spending much for a single card, wanting to make a Loogamon deck work without the BT14 SR hurts. But talking about the Secrets, the topic of the video: I would love Takemikazuchi for symbolic reasons, Mirei would be a great boost for my Maste deck but the waifu tax also affects the older one, I would love to make a GraceNova deck because I loved the game duology and the BT15 metalgarurumon would be great for my garurumon deck, being the blue cocytus starter deck my first Digimon deck. So many decks I can't afford at full power, because being a secret make them 10€ a piece at minimum. Not only that, I wish the rates were better. They could make it so that a SEC is in 3 out of 4 boxes, same with SR Alters, and a box having at least 1 of those. It hurts having gotten 2 alters out of EX5 boosters, and them not being secrets (or at least an SR I would use, but that's not the problem). Even Fanglongmon would be better, as at least is a card I can't get for much cheaper. Tldr: Sorry for the rant, I understand there needs to be incentives to buy in order for the game to continue, but it hurts when it makes decks in completable for those who can't/don't want to spend 10$ or more for a card.
No apologies! This is an open discussion and I appreciate the time you spent putting down your thoughts and experience with the Digimon card game. Bandai also has to navigate the two worlds of card games - players and sellers. Players may love a cheap card game, but the resell/market value of cards would be nonexistent if everything was cheap. I feel at this time, while secret rares sometimes have a lot of playability, I do wish they had a longer shelf life than one or two formats.
Honestly, i think that if SEC cards got reprints after, say, 6 months, at a lower rarity, that would give us a "best of both worlds"; they can still be super rare for a while, and after the reprint, the collectors can still be happy with having the original release with the "SEC" in the corner/original foil pattern/ however they choose to differentiate them.
One thing I did like about RB1 is that it did reprint cards. And while they opted to not print the alt arts and assign a different texture and block number, ultimately I think it was the timing that became an issue. Do we need reprints for other cards? I think so, for the sake of availability.
As nice of this idea is, it may be a year or more before we see this even be a possibility, if only because we're currently on the path to Parity for Global and JP, and even when we're caught up. It's still iffy because Bandai has 5 different card games to print for, and they'll usually want to prioritize new stuff over reprints.
@@Vaeltis This is the biggest dilemma. Too many card games meaning the printers are always active for something else. There's no time for reprints or second waves if product is scarce.
Really enjoying these videos where you go over the present and future of different aspects of the game. I'm of the mindset that this game should be treated as a hobby for fun first, and that long term investments really should not be of import to bandai. To me the price of Magnamon x and Rapidmon x set off red flags in my brain that this game may not be affordable for me forever. I'm hoping secret rares continue to mostly be like Ogudomon, and Takemikazuchi. In my opinion base rarity cards should always be affordable to keep the community happy and excited to build decks. Alt arts exist for those who want something to chase or show off.
I see both sides of why some cards need to be expensive and currently with us being behind on formats, it gives us an outlook on what kind of prices to expect for the secrets. Is this a good thing? Yes and no, for buyers it might deter them to wait for the card to drop but for sellers, who are just trying to make a living selling their cards it's harder to feel like you can take a new set and get some value out of it.
@@DIGI-PANDA I guess it feels like the flaw to how TCGs make money in general. They still run on a dated gacha model essentially. I think this is also some players need to be weary of when buying into the upcoming sets because it will feel like that with how fast our releases are. Post global release of next year, we will definitely be in a better place.
Secret rares should not be expensive... very simple and easy answer. It only hurts new players and my wallet, decreases my chances of actually buying a case if I'm gonna have to spend an extra 15-50 on a card I want.
I think SEC are double Edge sword. You want them to be good becaue of their rarety. But if you want them form deck with them they can cost upto 20-50 dollars. Making a single copy more expensive or equal value to every card in your Deck.
I'm currently researching another topic that I think some players will also be interested in regards to products. What kind of archetypes or general support is best? What's too much?
@@DIGI-PANDA That is tough. Even the meh card can improve the deck. I personally I think Poop Deck could a good candidate. They low key appear in almost every set and they so flexible that you can build into whatever you want. You want Black? Yellow or mixed? No problem. I been using Rapidmon X in my locals. And i also build that the deck never had thought this is a really bad card. Their Digimon Searchers often are lackluster. BT8 Terriermon add 1 Rapid or Gargo Digimon and EX4 adds 1 Dual Green Digimon and 1 Henry Wong Tamers. The Deck often uses other name Tamers or don't even rely on search outside Agility Trainings and Double Typhoon.
I only buy singles and hardly collect, so take my opinion with a cup of salt, but in a perfect world, I'd say the secret rares should only appeal to the collectors and second hand sellers. Dramatic art, wild if not potentially bad effects (I think level 7s would be ideal since they're big, dramatic dudes to begin with, like an Omni that deletes all Digimon and gains Sec+1 for each Digimon deleted but has an 8 memory digivolve cost or requires a [Tai Kamiya] and a [Matt Ishida] to attack, just something that makes you go "this card is nuts!" but doesn't have a ton of practicality in a competitive sense), and a higher rarity so it really feels special to get one of the big hits. The higher rarity would also mean more alt-art slots, which are usually what the game's players are after. If a competitive card is too cost prohibitive/rare to get a playset of, or even 1-2 of like DeathX and Ruin Mode, players will be driven away from the game because they can't pay the "entrance fee" of having a competitive (or at least locally competitive) deck.
No salt here! Just civil discussion. I appreciate the time you took to comment on the video. One thing that Bandai has been doing well on is introducing the new special rare cards. HOWEVER, my only problem with these special rare cards is that it is extremely difficult to tell where the price for these inevitably ends. Frankly, I'm astounded that the SP rares for BT16 are already below 200. Comparatively BT15 is still extremely high and not a lot of them were played. This goes back to the problem of supply and demand where in BT15's case the supply is relatively low. Playability is the factor in which why Magnamon X is still so high.
For me, I feel like a tech secret rare can go for a higher price as opposed to a secret boss of the deck. Mostly because you know the card is going to be a 4-of in 1-2 decks. E.g. Ruin mode can be played in a lot of decks but usually at a 1-2 of, so I understand the hype of it being more long term. Meanwhile, Magnamon X, whilst being in a very high ranking vaccine deck, is limited to that and Veemon armour, usually being played as a 3/4 of. Same with Rapidmon x. In that way, you’re still going to dump a lot of money on them because they’re part of a set already so a bulk buy price would probably give less hesitation to purchase them. Then there’s cards that could be cheaper because you’re only playing them at 1-2 copies in one deck, like DarknessBagramon, Shoutmon X7F, Gracenovamon and Bellestarmon X. There are some that could be weirdly priced like thst upcoming ex7 liberator option which could be good but also has the possibility of being shown-up by the promo option. I’m thinking back to my vanguard days with GR and Zeroth dragon cards for this.
@@DIGI-PANDA Oh absolutely. It’s going to suck but I’m confident we can get through the rough patch. And then there’s me who will swoop in when prices tank and scarper away like I’m Zoidberg getting caught with a tasty fish.
The LM set is going to be printed as a standalone set for a December release. We've also just got word that the newest LM set for Japan is going to have Ruin Mode?
I think it’s a combination of problems. Making the sec too depend on a type or line of evolution and also new sets most of the time don’t support older set which depreciates older cards unless they have a special ability or trait that hasn’t been used again or expanded.
Honestly it does seem that Bandai has been going the route of making SEC that don’t fall into the combination of the upper 2. When you take into account ex7’s SECs which are is likely playable and waifu tax, and a definitely playable search and evo option that really is maximized in Liberator decks, granted the latter will eventually hit playable and splashable status in time. Granted, we also have BT18 stuff being leaked currently, with Luce Stn md falling under Luce tribal.
ex7 will have waifu tax for sure as the Beelstarmon art is great, but the deck itself is gonna be pretty low tier. I tested it and it's way worse than the Beelstarmon we have right now. In Digimon Meta there's only one Beel winning one local tournament in the entire ex7 period. I don't think many people will play it so it may start strong in price and drop as nobody buys it.
I do not think sec rare cards should be generic. Making them mandatory game pieces only gate keeps players out of the game and does little to boost sales. Players become frustrated especially new players the older and more expensive and hard to obtain the cards are. Promos are just as bad if not worse at times and players already hate those. Like BT16 was suppose to be a good set to upgrade the double typhoon starter deck. But asking players to pay $40 for a copy of rapid X needing a full playset makes the deck hard to recommend to new players putting a bad taste in their mouths for picking that deck or they shell out the $300 for a fully upgraded starter deck when most other comptitive decks are usually are $100 - $150 on average. Almost every other starter deck didnt need a SEC rare cards to help upgrade them. Even the beelzemon starter came with the better level 7 not needing a SEC and BT12 at the time asked for a SR at the higher rarity.
One issue I have at this point is that there is a certain level of power that some decks have over others and that in itself is another gatekeeper to other decks. Is that necessarily Bandai's fault? Not necessarily because it's Bandai's goal to introduce new cards and power to existing decks to make them work.
@@DIGI-PANDA We have seen what happens when they are not trying to power spike the game though. Royal knights in BT13 was a strong deck but there was plenty of other decks on par if not better than what it was trying to do. BT14 had good SEC rares that were not over powered. Fanglongmon from EX05 was one of the better decks in BT15. BT15 post ban list was the largest most diverse format in the game and the were plenty of other formats last year that were fairly healthy (BT14, BT13, EX04). it is just at that time bandai seemed to know the power dynamics better to balance the game by making a lot of decks strong with one another while leaving vulnerabilities so it wasnt overly dominant. This current wave of design was doing everything it could to remove vulnerability from decks which is not a good thing to try to do especially when they did it so poorly. Block 3 IMO was a giant mistake and bandai knew this which is why block 4 so far feels underwhelming is because they are not wanting and trying to make the same mistakes happen again.
Secret Rares should be more 'guaranteed' per box. Price wise it is fine. A deck having a high rarity card is generally find, but Secret Rares are too rare for that. 2 Secret Rare per set and maybe 1 Secrete Rare per box is just rather polarizing.
Part of me wishes that instead of the alt art guarantee, there was a secret guarantee. That means in roughly 8 boxes you could have your 2 playsets of secrets.
I've been selling decks for the last months due to; well, the game going to shit; and the differences in price are absolutely crazy. Literally 46 cards of the deck cost 1 dollar; combined. And then the 4 lv6 SR cost 5 to 20$ each. You're selling a full deck for maybe 40-80$ but you could literally take away 99% of the deck and drop the price only 1$.
It's one of the crazy elements of deck cores! And I definitely think that deck cores is the way to move multiple cards at one time versus sitting on all the bulk. What I've started doing as well is for really cheap cards that 46 of them do add up to $1-4 I just donate it to locals to get newer players into the game.
All I know is that I hope the waifu tax doesn't make Mirei to expensive, and that I get a Mirei or two between my two boxes. Mastemon is my favorite deck. Please don't make me spend $200 on a playset of Mirei (I dunno if mastemon needs to run a full playset of the new Mirei, but I'd like to have the extra copies just in case. )
@DIGI-PANDA what's crazy is in 2 boxes I opened a grand total of... no mirei. I did open a full playset of seraphimon aces + 2 alt arts! Yaaaaay? Oh well. I was able to trade for an alt mirei, got given 2 mastemon aces to go with the 1 I pulled, so I can't complain... much... I accidentally over traded for the mirei but it's whatever. My fault for being desperate.
I have to disagree with compareing Ogoudomon to GraceNovamon. GraceNovamon is that price; but it's deck was never really better than maybe Tier 2 and that's being generous? 7DL is a competitive deck; maybe Tier 1.5; and goes up to Tier 1 when Shoto releases in EX07. Ogoudomon should be significantly pricier than GraceNovamon.
Interestingly, I just checked the price of Ogudomon over in JP and it looks to also be about $18-20. For a secret rare that does seem low to me. I think it'll be higher at first for sure but it does give a relative position at which it'll land at.

Dude I need some advice. I'm just getting started with the Digimon tcg but got stupid lucky. I pulled the Magnamon Tamer Party promo that I've seen go for 600 usd. Should I sell asap or hold?
The party promo one is currently listed at a low of $300 on TCGplayer. Most recent sales put it in the $200-220. Realistically, if you're wanting money there's nothing wrong with offloading this and picking up cheaper copies. Otherwise, if it's your first chase pull I'd keep it for the sentimental value.
Can we stop bringing the "waifu tax" into the cost argument? The cards that are high cost are there because of playability and/or availability. Rina was released in a terrible box set that tried to change up the pull rates leading to most people skipping sealed and grabbing singles. Had they made Rina into Tai V-Tamer but with the same effect text, it would've still been the same price as Rina is now.
I do think waifu tax is a thing to consider. There's just a higher demand for it from certain individuals. Even some players imported the Sistermon Noir solely because it wasn't released in NA. Although current prices indicate it'll be similar to Rina.
I presented both situations in which some cards from the beginning of the game have little to no value at this point, while there are other cards like DeathXmon and Ruin Mode who's design allows them to maintain value. Apocalymon is one card that I feel would have retained some value had it gone unchecked BUT of course there's a reason why that card went to the limit pile. Overall, there are some secret rares that just hold their value more so than others. And the question - should this change? Should secret rares be standardized to a certain pull rate? Power? Utilization?
I believe secrets should hold power, and price. Having cards drop to near zero keeps investors out of the game, and they are the ones that prop up pokémon, and magic.

I think due to our accelerated schedule this year, we're going to see cards tank and spike really fast with the quick formats and changes.
@@DIGI-PANDA Oh absolutely. It’s going to suck but I’m confident we can get through the rough patch.
And then there’s me who will swoop in when prices tank and scarper away like I’m Zoidberg getting caught with a tasty fish.
I didn’t realize there was a marketplace to view Japanese data. That’s cool.
There were a few places. This one was the one that I felt gave the most data.
8:00 wait we are going to get a LM set???!! Finally!!!!! Here hoping Rina is in it I need my 4 copy’s of her!!!!!!!
I don't mind general secret rares, I think for me, it's the cost that usually comes with them or the lack of playability at all.
I'm unsure if Mastemon can withstand the sands of time and as a result, am curious why Mirei is still so high XD
@@DIGI-PANDA I mean all essence she is the true waifu of the deck at this point, since she facilitates everything the deck needs for its game plan
Please don't make me spend $200 on a playset of Mirei (I dunno if mastemon needs to run a full playset of the new Mirei, but I'd like to have the extra copies just in case. )
Current prices indicate she's still up there. Even a week later. That's so crazy ha ha.
I think it'll be higher at first for sure but it does give a relative position at which it'll land at.
rare secrets if it's not strong, who would want to waste money on something weak
Personally, I feel with the reprints of the training options, BT14 gets a lot less in value.
"Kiki??"
Is a reference to a card, a player, or am I just old?
Player! Qiqi is one of the consistent players who tops with Ulforceveedramon across events!
@@DIGI-PANDA Thanks for the clarification! And now that I have this information, it's my duty as an Ulforce diehard to study their battles and become a better tamer!

Qiqi actually placed 9th place at the last regional event!
He was interviewed by Hoang Zero!

@@DIGI-PANDA I just looked up this video actually and I'm almost done watching it already, lol. Thanks for the tip though! I've learned a lot and I've already got some ideas as to how to incorporate some of Qiqi's tactics into my own strategy!
Glad to see my pet deck still has some life in it, lol.
It'll never die! :3
Ruin Mode has been out for a year, not 6 months lol
My bad! I might've been looking at the EX5 wiki at the time by mistake and splattered the wrong time in script.
This one with purple hair has Bandai's favoritism, but mirei has a habit of being quite annoying
Purple Hair, Greymon in name, Google head.. it's just a common trope :3
@@DIGI-PANDA No, if she finds out that you killed the demon lord who was ruining people's lives, she will have ruined people's lives
@@DIGI-PANDA ah kk. Thanks for you input. I am thinking of keeping it :D
1. no
2. Hell no
3. FUCK NO
Well.. that escalated quickly XD
Waifu Tax be real tho
Can we stop bringing the "waifu tax" into the cost argument? The cards that are high cost are there because of playability and/or availability. Rina was released in a terrible box set that tried to change up the pull rates leading to most people skipping sealed and grabbing singles. Had they made Rina into Tai V-Tamer but with the same effect text, it would've still been the same price as Rina is now.
I do think waifu tax is a thing to consider. There's just a higher demand for it from certain individuals. Even some players imported the Sistermon Noir solely because it wasn't released in NA. Although current prices indicate it'll be similar to Rina.
dont forget is pay to win lol
At this point, Numemon is largely inexpensive with the top end cards being the problem. DeathXmon, Ruin Mode, but even then they're one of's.
So is the concern that the cards won't hold their value then?
