About the Pathfinder that "only survives a few hours or something", the Mars Opportunity which was sent in 2003 was expected to last for 90 sols, or 90 Mars days, lasted an incredible 15 years because the wind cleaned the solar panels so it could recharge properly. It's last message back to earth was "My battery is low and it's getting dark." RIP Mars Opportunity. Space and science is awesome! :D PS: It's sad that you didn't see that it was Boromir who said "because it's a secret meeting" when Project Elrond was brought up, Sean Bean is the actor who played Boromir in Lord of The Rings.;D
One of the really neat things about the book this movie is based on is that the character had to calculate power usage per Martian day. As a shorthand he invented a new unit of measurement called a "Pirate-Ninja". That calculation is one that JLP has to do fairly often as well, so the actual JPL has started to use the unit of measurement informally. But it has been referenced by engineers and in meetings with various management.
The radioactive generator: In the book they tell you it's sealed in the casing, plus each piece of radioactive material is inside a pellet that keeps the radiation from being dangerous to people. The function of the generator uses the heat emitted from the radioactive material to generate electricity. There is still plenty of heat emitted from it, but the radiation is sealed up and won't hurt Mark.
13:47 the real pathfinder failed to establish communication and they thought it was dead, but it would power down most of the electronics at night and turn on some heaters. In the morning it would reboot at specific times and during the boot process they worked out a way to communicate with it during like a 10 second window. It eventually got too much dust on it so the solar panels couldn't recharge.
Everything in space is trying to kill you is one of the messages. The author of the book wanted this to be about systems and how they work and can fail. You just go step by step using the knowledge you have to solve a situation and you may survive. The author is a computer science expert and knows how to troubleshoot and solve system issues. He wanted to adapt that thought to going to Mars and the problems we are likely to have. The book is much better than the movie and the movie is good. Great story.
Yeah the books i samazing. If you get a chance try to get a hold of the audio book reading by Andy Weir (I think he is called). He does an even more amazing job with it
@ 22:22 No, it was an unmanned probe with food & supplies they were trying to send to Mars. Nice reaction to this movie guys. For another space adventure-suspense based on true events and history do "Apollo 13" (1995) with Tom Hanks. ✌️😎
Since you asked: The actor who played Mark Watney is Matt Damon. He's a huge star. He played Jason Bourne in a bunch of movies; Linus Caldwell in Ocean's Eleven, Twelve, and Thirteen; and was also in Mystic Pizza; Good Will Hunting; Saving Private Ryan; The Talented Mr. Ripley; Syriana; The Informant!; True Grit; Contagion; Interstellar; Ford v Ferrari; and a bunch of other movies.
Ar the beginning I thought the reason they went out is because their rocket to take them back to their ship would not survive that storm. So they either go now or stay there forever.
To me this is what a science fiction story should be. No light sabers, no bug-eyed monsters. Just people using science and technology realistically to achieve their ends in a unique situation, to the betterment of everyone involved.
Andy Weir (who wrote The Martian) has a couple of other books kind of like this, and they're all fantastic if you enjoyed The Martian. I particularly loved Project Hail Mary
In the commentary, they indicated it was really Matt Damon's choice to finally let out some of that emotion when he first gets voice comms with "Hermes", so that little tremble when he thanks them for coming back was the actor. If you want a space movie that will rivet you emotionally, try "Gravity"
It's clearer in the book, but the storm was strong enough to tip over their rocket (MAV). If it had fallen, they would all have been trapped and they would probably have died. The MAV was already starting to tip, so they had to go right then.
And that is the only false science that Andy Weir fesses up to in the book. Actually, the atmosphere is so thin on Mars that a storm would never cause that much damage.... The Full Audio book is great! - ruclips.net/video/kN13easUTAw/видео.html
Ellie's confusion about Project Elrond: The original plan was to rush send another unmanned supply probe using the booster from China. It would get there when Mark would be nearly dead from starvation. The new plan is to use the Hermes, the ship that has the rest of the crew on the way back to Earth. Right at this time the Hermes is going really fast and is about to start slowing down so it can orbit Earth, the crew can get off and the ship can get some maintenance. Instead, they want Hermes to start speeding up even more. By the time it gets to Earth it will be going so fast that it can only do what's called a flyby. The Chinese booster is used to get enough food up to the ship while it uses Earth's gravity to adjust course to go back to Mars. The ship will be going fast enough that it would get back to Mars well before the supply probe launched from Earth would get to Mars. In order for the ship to get from Mars back to Earth again, though, they have to do another flyby past Mars. This means Mark has to get to the Mars Ascent Vehicle for the next mission, which is a huge distance away, which he has to drive to on a frozen, airless wasteland.
There is another space move called Apollo 13. It is based on actual events of that mission to Moon. Tom Hanks, Bill Paxton, and Kevin Bacon playing astronauts who were involved in the mission.
Another detail in the book was Johansen talking to her parents, telling them about the rescue plan - and that she knows she will be coming back because the others have all agreed that as she's the youngest and smallest that if anything goes wrong, they'll all suicide so she will have enough food and oxygen for the journey. That's the level of forward planning these sorts of people consider.
That is Matt Damon from the movie Good Will Hunting. I believe to be his best role so far. By the way, I was told space isn't calm because there are tiny little rocks traveling faster than a pullet because in space there is no resistance. Space is violent not calm and peaceful.
I was thinking the same thing. The air is about 1% of the earth's atmosphere. But I was able to suspend disbelief for that scene since the rest of the movie was amazing. :-)
Michael Pena calling Mark Watney Iron Man was cool and also theres a few MCU guys in this movie, Michael Pena himself in Ant Man, Benedict Wong in Dr, Strange and Shang Chi, Sebastian Stan in Captain America and the Avenger movies, Chiwetel Ejiofor in Dr. Strange, and also counting Matt Damon in a cameo in Thor and Donald Glover in Spiderman
They left at the beginning because the rocket they used to leave would have tipped over by the strong winds anyways, meaning none of them would have been able to leave.

One of the rare movies that equaled or bettered the book (Along with Shawshank and Green Mile) imho. If you haven't read Jaws, DON'T. Movie script way better. F.I. Mrs Brody was sleeping with Hooper🤮

Guys if you don't understand english all that well you should definitly watch a sub version in your own language (Bulgarian maybe). I feel you miss so much cause you don't fully understand english.
Yeah, if you've played Kerbal Space, you probably already know how to do a gravity assist followed by a rendezvous. IRL, you only get one chance for this maneuver. Drop a decimal place and it's all over. It just occurred to me: If they had just brought along a net...
