This song bring me back to 1977, Okinawa, Japan, I was a U.S. Marine stationed there at Camp Hansen. after many deployments and back to camp, I would go into Kin Village and hit the local bars, Karaoke was big there and my first karaoke song I picked to sing was this song. I was from Huntington Beach Ca. I still sing this song at my local karaoke club 40 years later.
I drove to LA in 1974 seeking my future, so this song hits home. Things worked out well, but things weren't easy at first. Often heard this song on the car radio when driving LA freeways. Today I am living in south Florida and enjoying it. Still, going to LA was worth it.
For sure. For many it ends in failure, others success, or something in between. California has always been a magnet for dreamers, less so today than years ago. For me it was the entertainment business, landing with Disney in the 70's, right out of collage. Though I didn't stay in LA, I have a fondness for it. Now it's a great place to visit but I would want to live there. But in 1974, it was everything I imagined it to be. No regrets.
I remember standing in the liquor store parking lot in So. Cal. in 72/73 pimping beer and this song going through my head. It was POURING rain!!! LOL!!

I was born in 1973, but my first memories of life was in 1976. I only remember bits and pieces of this decade, but what I do remember is that everything had a groovy, laid back feeling to it all. This song is a prime example of that.
I came to California in 1973 as a 20 yr boy and lived there till end of 1990 ... I get depressed thinking about all that now that i am 68 and living in Texas

Love this song and the sentiment that it stirs up, but I’m trying to live in the now. Left social media because all of the negativity and try to connect with people. I can recall listening to this song in 1973 on a table counter radio in the kitchen with my mother cooking, my brother was in the army and loved this song, every time I hear it I think of him and my mother crying because she knew it was his favorite song.
Great song, lived in Orange Cty, 72-74 and that song on radio as often as Baker Street and Good Time Charly !! At 17 seconds, that's not a westbound 747-WUWT ?? - no bump for 2nf floor at front.. looks like an old 707 ...
In many ways this song is a reflection on a small part of my life. In 1974 I left college and headed to LA to get a job in the TV/Film business. I beat the streets and almost gave up and nearly ran out of money before I landed a position at a major studio. LA was both the best and worst, at the same time. I would go running in Beverly Hills, crew on a nice sailboat out of Marina Del Rey, and be a frequent house guest in Palm Springs all while hating the smog and traffic. Love this song because it is true to many who do the same.
I was born and raised in Burbank and you describe the place perfectly. California is both the best place to live and the worst at times. One thing that no one can argue though is it is the most unique place that I have ever lived.

When I was watching the Los Angeles Rams playing an NFL game back in 1973 broadcasted from Olympic stadium there in southern california at home in Lodi California, it was raining hard during that game for the Rams in December on that game, this song popped into my mind during most of the game.

What is any less straightforward about life today? Perhaps you've found that as you get older, your responsibilities increase and life becomes trickier?
Thanks for lyrics. Really it seems never rains in California, but don't they warn you about...so be careful. Special message to false opportunities. Very emotional song, and emotional women there. Saludos desde Barcelona.
Do you realize that the song is about how poorly California treats the young and hopeful? It was true then, it is true now. Crime and violence ran rampant, terrorism reached peaks that haven't yet been matched, and hard drugs flooded the streets. If you don't remember any of that, congratulations on being a child/clueless teen during the seventies. That said, I'd do anything to go back to that time. Don't Disneyfy it. Accept the bad along with the good.
@@BenDover-rq6zf Actually violent crime and murderer have been declining since then, one theory suggests that with the mainly with pill but also abortions there were few unwanted , un-cared for children so there was a better overall lives and less delinquency.
@@paladro You can say that, you can say the earth is flat. But I have the statistics that back my point up what do you have? For a working class woman that has a child early and becomes a single mother the chances of her creating a stable home life in the US are very low. Following abortions many women have the chance to create an stable home life and then go on to have more children who they can support. Of course in Europe where there is less religion and more social care then single mothers are supported a lot more. Sweden has far more sex education, far better social supports and far lower teen pregnancy rates. These things are all linked. Do you have any actual evidence or do you just say things?

OH, the sad memories of that song. My buddy and I had just returned from Vietnam when the song came out. Jimmy Jack was from El Centro California and it became his favorite song. Tragically, he was killed in a car wreck about a month later.
jimmy baker survived Vietnam but killed in a car crash what a sad waste
Sorry for your friend
Sorry about your friend. Thank you for your service though. Vietnam vets don't get enough appreciation.
🙏🙏
What a bitch,to be killed right after getting back from that useless Hell Hole...............
This is such a great old song !
This is a good song. That reminds me of the old days 🎶😜😁
When I was watching the Los Angeles Rams playing an NFL game back in 1973 broadcasted from Olympic stadium there in southern california at home in Lodi California, it was raining hard during that game for the Rams in December on that game, this song popped into my mind during most of the game.
This is the song that makes me and breaks me so much joy and heartache California gave me
never get bore of listening to this song, great memories in the 70’S
This song makes me nostalgic for time period I never lived in.
Loved this when it first came out in the seventies ... still love it now
Hello from Berlin, Germany, have been there a couple of times and - one night it did rain, yippie 😍👍💃
Liar
mom liked so much this song at 1970s.i listen again and feel my mom closer than 70s near to me then i enjoy deepest of my soul , seems it never will end this song. blessings Historicus Joe.
this song bring me beautiful memory of the seventies Oslo 71 whit a beautiful girl from Finland, thanks for that lovely song!!
I just wonder if our children will remember their youth in quite the same way we did . Life was much more straight forward .
Left school and started work at 15 yrs
The future seemed straight forward as well; make things better. That hasn't worked out to be the case in so many ways.
This song bring back memories it's was more laid back during this time more caring for each other
Do you realize that the song is about how poorly California treats the young and hopeful? It was true then, it is true now.
Crime and violence ran rampant, terrorism reached peaks that haven't yet been matched, and hard drugs flooded the streets. If you don't remember any of that, congratulations on being a child/clueless teen during the seventies.
That said, I'd do anything to go back to that time. Don't Disneyfy it. Accept the bad along with the good.
We did not seriously start killing children until 1972
@@BenDover-rq6zf Actually violent crime and murderer have been declining since then, one theory suggests that with the mainly with pill but also abortions there were few unwanted , un-cared for children so there was a better overall lives and less delinquency.
@@chrisyoung5929 some people say... what nonsesne.
December 1982. I’m at Logan Airport in Boston on my way to LAX to go to infantry school at Camp Pendleton. It’s 22 degrees out and snowing. 8 hours later I walk out of LAX and it’s 70 degrees and sunny. Nuff said
I was 17 and a senior in high school back in the fall of '72, when this song came out. Living in rural Nebraska. Dreamin' of California.
Where in NE.?
There is something so different about Texas, West and Central Florida, Midwest USA , Southern California, True South and Upstate Florida / Upstate NY people..
Many of you are precious Earth Angels..
So many of us in society have forgotten common decency
When I was young I thought this was about the weather. Now I know what this song is talking about and it sure rings true.
I was born in West Covina in 1963
Moved to Redding Ca. I’m now an idahoan . Proud of both
Go dodgers!!
Sweet, sad and dreamlike song! Love it!
Such a beautiful song❤❤😊😊
Pure magic... Carry me away too...just make sure it's to the 70's and California!
Beautiful nostalgic song
A classic, thank you. Wonderful memories.
Hello everyone from Sweden! I wonder why you keep looking for oldies to listen to? If you close your eyes at the same time, all the pictures come out in front of your eyes. Carefree perhaps compared to today's world?!
Never tire of this one...
Havn't heard this song in years. Australian grown, never seen California so if I get to visit, I won't need my umbrella!!
one of my favorites when I was a teen in 1970s
one of the best singers and song writer of my lifetime if not of all times.
Beautiful weather and city, San Diego is
...! My two best friends live there! Hi you two! ❤️🎵🎤🎸🎹
That one of your friends @ 50:?! Very demure, you know....
Lived in San Diego till I was 14. Moved at '81 to Phoenix. Still go back to visit from time to time, but boy such fond memories. Especially growing up listening to songs like this. Thanks for posting 😊
Well bring your tail to southern Mississippi. We get more rainfall here than anywhere in the US. Last weekend it rained 9 inches in less than 6 hours.
Back when we had good music and California was much different. Love this song
I was in college when this hit the charts. It is forever embedded in my mind.
My PTSD is also embedded in my mind forever !
