  • This clip contains the Salomé dance parody scene from "The Cook" (1918) starring Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle with Buster Keaton. There is also a seeming allusion to Cleopatra. "Salomé" and "Cleopatra" had been recent Theda Bara films.
The music accompanying the video was composed by Fernand Le Borne for the 1908 French film "L'Empreinte ou la Main Rouge". That was one of the earliest films to have an original film score composed for live accompaniment, but the original film is not available for viewing. One part of the score I thought was particularly appealing: "A L'Abbaye de Thélème / Cauchemar de Pierrot". Although the film was a drama, this music fits surprisingly well with Arbuckle's comic Salomé parody filmed a decade later, and makes the comedy work more effectively. The beginning of the sheet music can be seen at the end of the video; note the various cues to keep the music aligned with the action on screen in the 1908 film.
This music selection ran slightly longer than the Salomé parody scene, so I repeated a few of the brief cutaway shots in order that the scene and music would end together. The 1908 score was composed for orchestra or for piano solo; I have used the sheet music for the piano solo version, which I downloaded from the SFSMA archive and transcribed into the Musescore app to generate the music heard on the video. Hopefully a real pianist (or orchestra?) will play it again some day, for real.

This was HILARIOUS!! But on top of everything else, I sure wish the film could have recorded the music of that cool band in the back. I wonder how it sounded. :)

Did you notice that Roscoe pulled two scoops of ice cream out of that steaming cauldron? or is it mashed potatoes and gravy?

I assumed it was mashed potatoes.
