  • In this video, our Mastercam Application Expert will show you how to use an exciting new feature in Mastercam 2019. Watch how to create a 3D Tool for Lathe, from scratch using just step models you can download from a manufacturer.
Let our Application Expert show you the best practices when working with Mastercam for SOLIDWORKS. This webinar covers how time tested and innovative toolpath strategies within Mastercam to machine your parts, identifying collisions with tooling, and how to take advantage of SOLIDWORKS assembly tools for Manufacturing.

Can you put up a video on how to edit this tool for a sub spindle and use the tool for both the main spindle and sub spindle without affecting each other?

Hi. Just a quick question. Is is possible to defy the maximum depth of the plunge in custom tool especially internal grooves and boring bars? I can set the clearance of the insert but when I use it it does not recognise where the holder starts and if i accidentally selecting a deeper undercut then the actual holder capable to plunge its still plunging in, even though its shows in simulation as the holder digging into the surface. With standard holders you can set the thickness of the holder and the distance from the centre of the holder and the edge of the insert but I could not find where to set un customised tool. Thanks in advance

Hello, you can set a maximum rough depth for a lathe tool but that will only set a max depth for an individual plunge move, not an overall max depth. When using 3D tools the thickness of the holder is determined by the model itself. While there is no general control for the thickness of the holder (if we're talking about creating a custom tool from 2D geometry) there is a decent write up in the HELP section of Mastercam about creating round holders for boring bars and groove tools.

      Great explanation, thanks David!

David Ferguson thanks for the reply but even if I use 3d tooling it foes notice the holder, in simulation shows the holder is digging into the material but it still going in. Here is a picture about the issue:

    Hi !
How can I pick the second insert for u drill which has double inserts ?

    • @dvoferguson

Hello, at the moment you are limited to a single insert but most tool manufacturers model their multiple insert cutters revolved so you're only dealing with a single insert on the solid itself.

When mating the insert and the holder i select the insert just as you have shown but then it says to select a face on the holder but the holder is not visible, do you have any idea what I am doing wrong?

Hello, if you've loaded both the insert and the holder model they be visible during the mating process. Using the Coincident method the insert would be first, then the holder. This is done on the mating page after both the insert and holder have been recognized.

Is it possible to import model spacial tools for use tool in mastercam and can see verify tool path?

You can use solid models to define tools for both lathe and mill. They will appear in both Backplot and Verify as fully rendered 3D tools.
