Yep, we used to have really, really good music back in the day!! We just thought it was normal to have incredible music, in many genres, all the time...but it eventually ended (for the most part in the mid-90s at the latest, for me at least, lol)
You're probably just a few months older than me. That song still brings out the chills in Cards fans to this day. This was before they came up with One Shining Moment so this song is forever united with that 1980 championship.
The great Kenny Loggins with the great Michael McDonald on background vocals. Kenny has a great catalog. In 1980, this was the theme of the NCAA Basketball Tournament. It was brought back in 81 and maybe 82 too. I'm glad you covered the origin of the song. Gives it more meaning.
Song won the Grammy for song of the year. Michael McDonald had the core of the song and Kenny wrote the lyrics when his father was dying in the hospital. Some people think that Michael Jackson copied some of Kenny's vocalizations.
But MJ didn't copy it, Seth Riggs taught that style. The vocal technique is called "Speech Level Singing" SLS. MJ, KL and George Michael mastered it. Main MJ and GM.
So you heard Mr. Michael McDonald singing back up in this one, he was also in The Doobie Brothers and Steely Dan. He also has some amazing solos like “I Keep Forgetting.” You’d probably also like Jackson Browne, “The Pretender,” “Doctor My Eyes,” and more.
The first time I heard Kenny Loggins was when he was part of Loggins & Messina. I had their 45 record Your Mama Don’t Dance. 1972. Also, he has an album of lullaby’s, which I would play every night to fall asleep to if my husband wasn’t opposed, called Return To Pooh Corner. It really is good!!!
Kenny Loggins, has an extensive catalog. For a good number of years in the 70's & 80's, he had one hit after another. That guy was always on the radio! I love this song, but my favorite Kenny Loggins song is, "Heart To Heart". It goes HARD even 40+ years later! Please check out- HEART TO HEART. I predict flames. (it's FIRE) Ryan will lose his mind @ 3:20 Thanks, Guys! Take care. P.S. Pleeease, wait until Ty is back in town, he WILL NOT want to miss this!!
Caddy Shack's "Footloose" and Top Gun's "Highway To The Danger Zone"...yep, Kenny Loggins. You guys are just scratching the surface: "House at Pooh Corner", "What A Fool Believes", "I Believe In Love", "Angry Eyes" (Loggins and Messina), "Danny's Song", "Love Will Follow" and so many more.
Kenny first started out in the early 70’s. Loggins and Messina Danny’s Song Mama Don’t Dance I was 6 years old when I first heard him. I’m a 80’s girl, thank god for my older siblings introduce me to great music. Check out Bob Segar Turn the Page Night Moves Main Street
was funny that you were singing the song and didn't know you were. 😂That's funnier than when middle guy didn't know Phil Collins was the drummer on "In the air tonight."❤❤😅
Add this to the soundtrack of your life. Kenny Loggins is one of the singer-songwriter GOATs, since he was in Loggins & Messina. Along with Michael McDonald and all other greats he just got better as time progressed! Great song choice to react to. :)
You guys give it three heads bopping up!! 3 young men listening 🎶 👌 to great music so " this is it" you guys have been accumulating great taste!! Keep it up!-
You guys need to do "Heart To Heart," "I'm Alright" and "Danger Zone." (I know you've already done "Don't Fight It" and "Footloose.") But yeah, Kenny Loggins definitely had one of the best voices out there and was one of the most popular solo artists from 1979 through 1986. 👍🏻
A bit of Michael jackson and George michael in the vocals. I've always thought this too Lol, meet me halfway is another great song definitely a George Michaelish vocal as well
Kenny Loggins had so many hits. So many. Before he went solo he was in a very popular duo who had numerous hits themselves. Loggins and Messina. So many hits. Try some Asia such as Heat of the Moment. So many great songs. Also the late but great Dan Fogelberg. Songs such as Netherlands, Missing You and the Power of Gold to name just 3. Dozens more.
Love your reactions to this song! It is awesome! So is Kenny Loggins! For deep lyrics: I believe in love. For a dreamy like song, like you guys like:; Enter my dream. More of a rock song: Lady Luck. For beautiful melodic harmony: I've got the melody.
During this era, the charts were a lot more diverse. "This is It" was a pop hit, but also did well on the R&B and Adult Contemporary charts. During this time, the top 10 on the pop music charts could have Van Halen, Ronnie Milsap, Michael Jackson, and the SOS Band played consecutively. Great era.
Not early ‘70’s, mid to late ‘70’s & ‘80’s. Great concert performance with r&b vocalist, Shanice, on a song called Love Will Follow, in a place called The Redwoods. He also did a special remix of This Is It with Michael McD guest.
55 year old here who's heard this song I don't know how many times, and not once have I really sat down and taken in the words -- until viewing your reaction. Nice work, you guys - you know how to connect with your audience and bring us in!! :)
It's heartening to see those smiles on your faces and bobbing of your heads. For so long songs like this were considered "uncool" by the generation before you.
Loggins and Messina are the 70's, very popular in the early 70's. He also sings "Danger Zone" which you'd recognize if you've watched the movie Top Gun!
Kenny Loggins has such a deep catalog of songs you should listen to. He's had some great collaborations and some great solo work. I hope you'll do more of his work. I can't imagine that you'd be disappointed.
Love this song and I love Kenny Loggins! You're right that the songs tarts with a kind of airy raspiness, but then it builds to where he's telling his Dad to fight and the power comes in, and there are even one or two words that he kind of growls and I just love it!!
My first big time rock-and-roll concert experience was seeing Kenny when he was still the first half of Loggins and Messina. That was 1974. They have been favorites of mine (together and apart) all this time since then. After six studio and two live albums together, in 1976 Kenny and Jimmy parted ways. They both embarked on solo careers but Kenny is the one who caught the fast train to stardom. I've got all fourteen of his studio albums and both of his live albums. I can be your Kenny guru if you want me to be. I know there are several hits that it would seem logical to pursue next, but, there is a deep cut, also from Keep the Fire, that I think will interest you. Ty said that at one point, Kenny sounded like Michael Jackson. My all-time favorite Kenny tune, Who's Right, Whos Wrong (with a bit of a jazz vibe) has MJ singing background. Check that out first, then move on to Footloose, Don't Fight It, I'm Alright, Celebrate Me Home, Whenever I Call You Friend. Then we can go back to some great deep cuts and guest appearences (Kenny did a duet with Phoebe Snow on her album, Never Letting Go.) Ball's in your court, gentlemen...
This is also at least top 10! I loved watching your reaction... Childhood memory of this song driving to Florida (when the song first came out). Also my kids and i listened to his greatest hits cd a lot when they were little. "Whenever I Call You Friend " with Stevie Nicks is so good!
If you haven’t done so already, check out Kenny Loggins and Jim Messina doing “Angry Eyes”. The live version on youtube is best. Since you loved Year of the Cat this will be right up you alley
Oh my! If you’ve never seen Caddyshack…it’s a crime. As far as Kenny Loggins…he’s mostly known for the amazing soundtrack music and as far as his work on his own…I lost track in my time because the soundtrack music was so good. This is good and can’t go wrong with Michael McDonald ever!!!!!! I Keep Forgetting guys!!!! Come on now!!! He did compilation with Steve Perry and more with McDonald. Absolutely incredible in so many ways. We need more of all 3 artists here guys!!!!! Come hear the great beginnings of the 80s and throughout! Get on the bandwagon boys!!!
You should go down the Kenny Loggins rabbit hole. Straight fire songs including a song he does with Journey front man Steve Perry. Called Don’t Fight it.
Check out Kenny Loggins guest appearance on Live From Daryl's House where he does this song. Both Kenny's and Daryl's voices may have lost a little range, but it' always interesting to see a live performance.
When this first came out Poncho Wright came to visit my dungeon. I put this on the turn table and Poncho freaked got up and started dancing. The next day he brought a few of his crew, Rodney McCray and Wiley Brown with him. Played it again and they were all dancing. It became the theme song for the UofL basketball team. They won the NCAA tournament that season.
your reactions are great! New sub here...58 yrs old and grew up with this music and it's so cool to see you guys experiencing for the first time. An awesome video for you to do would be U2's performance of "Bad" at Live Aid....I promise it will deliver! Cheers
Y'awl should, really, check-out: the song he recorded with his friend: Stevie Nicks: "Whenever I Call You 'Friend'" (killer cut). and my favorite from his (too brief) "band period" with: 🔥🔥🔥🔥Loggins & Messina -the song is: "Angry Eyes" (killer!!🤘) -also: outside of Jethro Tull, one of the extremely few songs with a flute solo (certainly within the "radio-friendly" rock arena). 🤘🤘
Boys... HEART TO HEART by Kenny Loggins... The sax solo near the end wlll NOT disappoint... promise.
You should listen to "Heart to Heart" next. You guys will love it, especially Ryan.
Yep, we used to have really, really good music back in the day!! We just thought it was normal to have incredible music, in many genres, all the time...but it eventually ended (for the most part in the mid-90s at the latest, for me at least, lol)
1980 was a massive downturn…….
Truth.
Absolutely true.
I agree
There's still plenty of good music. Expand your bubble.
This song is actually about his dad who had cancer. He was telling him not to give up.
Yes 😢🔥💗🥰 Love this Song!!
This was played on the R&B radio channels back in the day.👍🏼👍🏾
Kenny Loggins "Heart to Heart".
You're welcome.
I’m so happy to see you guys diggin the songs that I’ve loved for 40 years
I am too ……. It’s funny I play these songs for my 2 daughters, they are
always amazed ……..😘
This was the theme song of the 1980 NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship Game on NBC. Louisville Cardinals won!! I was 15 years old then.
You're probably just a few months older than me. That song still brings out the chills in Cards fans to this day. This was before they came up with One Shining Moment so this song is forever united with that 1980 championship.
The great Kenny Loggins with the great Michael McDonald on background vocals.

@@TheRealShaqMr MJ did it after Kenny
As a College Basketball Fan. Remember hearing this on NBC telecast of NCAA Tourney back in late 70s and early 80s!
DID YOU KNOW...Kenny sang backup for MICHAEL JACKSON at one time. And MJ actually returns the favor on one of the tracks of "Keep The Fire".
Won Grammy in 1981 for Best Male Pop Performance. Michael McDonald co-wrote the song.

Me too, in 1973
So much greatness in that era.
Seeing you all fall madly in love with Kenny makes my heart happy ❤️🤗🤗 my generation had the finest music 🎶
We sure did !!!!!!!! 😘
Kenny Loggins is a master of emotional dynamics.
Hi guys! I would love to see you react to Kenny Loggins "Heart to Heart" also backed up by Michael McDonald. You're gonna love it.
His night watch album..1978..fantastic..every song excellent

I really like "Celrbrate Me Home."
Great song, makes me feel good, like being home
Yes, beautiful song.
I used to DJ for the Toronto Swing Dance Society. This is perfect for West coast swing. Love it.
"Heart To Heart" is another great one. And I also recommend "Heartlight" I've been into it lately

Michael Jackson's last tour that never happened was called This Is It! It's so ironic!
You should do "Don't Fight It" by Kenny Loggins and Steve Perry. I was hooked after watching you guys do "Year of the Cat".
