- Every time I watch Roman Polanski's "The Ninth Gate," I find myself more and more fascinated by the lore behind the main plot device in the film. That device is "De Umbrarum Regni Novem Portis" or better known as "The Nine Gates of the Kingdom of Shadows.." Like other fictional grimoires, I find this one especially intriguing. Woodcuts within are devious and yet tend to hold one's attention. I decided that I had to have this book in my collection.

Interesting Fact:
Mentmore Towers, the location where Kubrick filmed the ritual, and the Chateau de Ferriéres, where Polanski filmed practically the same subject, were two estates belonging to the Rothschild family.
Also, in the Chateau de Ferrières, in 1972, Guy de Rothschild, held famous masked surrealist ball that seems to have inspired Kubrick for the filming of the masked party in Eyes Wide Shut.

Thanks for the review, I liked the movie a lot, I think that Roman made a great story here, sadly there is no extended version, which could tell us more details. Frank Langella with his smooth voice, added a fantastic aesthetic to the Balkan character, also I think that Johnny Depp played a good rol here, an agnostic one, but Dean Corso, as the movie develops it's way, gain more and more insight about what is about to come, and finally, he gets what is more valuable than money - which was his first objective-, Wisdom and Knowledge.

Nowhere near to the film prop though which is a shame
It' s also fun to compare the engravings from the P-Reverte's book with the ones in the film: they made certain changes to adjust to the changed plot (the kneeling man, the face of the archer, the whole 9th gate engraving). The director created smth quite different loosely based on the story.

I bought the same book, I arranged the pages and said the verses. What happened to me? I slipped on ice fell down 7 steps knocked out cold for 2 seconds and my right arm got swollen. I’m still healing my arm. The book is possessed.

It's the Balkan' s version, pity they don't piblish the one with all engravings signed by LCF... and why didn't they replace the forged page with the 9th gate with the removed, original, one?.. I'd do that, adding the forged one as an addition)) Bonus) That would make this copy complete.

I believe that Dean Corso is LCF.
Not sure about that. Why didn't he know he was and why the journey and the woman with green eyes, did she know? Not saying I disagree as there have been arguments for him being LCF.
In the book it shows green eyes riding the dragon at the end of the movie she rides corso
the size of the pages do not match at all to the original.
I believe the original pages are 8 1/2 by 11" or closer to regular size pages. It would be interesting to try to make one
looks like they place the pages in a bigger size, a lot of blank space.
Read the fine print warning "aAhem" slanted eye response "NOT FOR HUMANS!"
