Why do people keep blaming tourists for unaffordable rent prices?
Doesn't the problem lie with the duenos (landlords), who increase their rents to simply make more money?
It isn't mandatory - it is just greed as always which this boils down to.

Spain's answer for everything. More taxes (like the wealth tax) that still don't solve any problems, still benefit the ultra wealthy, and meanwhile leaving locals with income and housing issues at which point they decide to assault innocent people. I LOVE Spain. But I think for at least a year we all need to stop traveling there. And they need to force their government to redesign regulations and manage things the right way. This is ridiculous 🙄 Don't give them your dollars.

Yes, that's the way to do it, double it or treble, or quadruple it, and keep putting it up, that will get what you want, then there will be plenty of accomidation, problem is, , , .

Good evening Stuart, I was quite surprised by the negative comments that I received by certain Spaniards. Lovely Spanish Citizens for those that find the previous Adjective offensive. It was in regards to the subject of Gibraltar. All I asked was; ¨What about Melilla as well as Cueta being on the North African Coast and being occupied by Spain”?To my surprise, one Individual, accused me of being British. ( I’m a Polish Citizen, that now an then, resides in the UK). Melilla was given to the Spanish in 1497, Then of course, much later in 1668 during the ;”Treaty of Lisboa” ,Cueta was handed over to Spain. Regarding Gibraltar, during the treaty of Utrecht 1713, That little chunk of Rock was handed over to the British. Ask just about any ; “ Ganito” or Local who has been raised there, what he thinks about being who they are,and the majority of the time the Locals all agree on being Who they are.. Democracy hard at work for those who prefer the times of the Beloved Franco Francisco! Saludo Colegas Míos!

Stu, am currently in Madeira for a few days break. Possibly one of the most stunning and amazing places in the world, but if people think that the likes of Barcelona have too many tourists, they should try here. Total greed has taken over by Tour Companies here with next to no remote beauty spots left to explore without hordes of people descending. IMO, avoid Madeira totally😮 until after the next pandemic or financial collapse.

People of all ages in Spain are quite rightly annoyed about the fact that affordable rental opportunities are becoming as rare as hens teeth. This is not on the tourists, but on the current (and completely daft) housing policy in Spain which allows protection to people who are “vulnerable” to legitimately squat. This deters landlords from offering long term rental opportunities, preferring short term, high-rent, holiday lets with lower risk. A similar situation exists in some cities in the UK, where Air BnB is allowed to dominate I.e. Edinburgh or London. Writing as a Scot living in Spain, I don’t believe that the Spanish want to deter tourism, they just want a more equitable housing policy.

  • @robcarter55

Don't those tourists from cruises spend an awful lot of money in Spanish tourist shops ?
Like I said in a previous comment my favourite destination was Mallorca but I have not been on holiday for several years. However I know lots of people who holiday every year but none I can think of have gone to spain. Recently it's been Turkey , Portugal ,Greek islands and Morocco.
Glad Spain has such a fantastic economy it no longer needs tourism. I had heard it was almost bankrupt but that must have been a lie !

The Madrid officials wanted to demolish our town centre hotel, built in 60s as it hangs out over the sea. It was built on top of an old fish canning building. However, they dropped the case after realising that removing the building would result in all the sand being removed from the main beach and the wind barrier of the building is the only thing making the plaza useable.

It seems that mayor is demonising tourists. I don't necessarily disagree with raising the tourist tax for cruises, but you can't say that they don't benefit the city. Just visiting la Sagrada Família costs 20 to 30 euros, then there's any food and drink they purchase, plus any shopping. The problem here isn't the tourists themselves. I'm no expert, but I would limit tourist rentals and implement a rent cap to make it affordable for locals.

I reckon the Issue is Housing or rather the lack of it. I can remember Barcelona’s Summer Olympics in 1992, and the joy it brought local denizens knowing they had placed their City on the Map. Mass tourism became a by product of that effort.
The same can’t be said for Madrid, as the Capital was never built for tourism, rather as a political and administrative centre. Now almost thirty years later, Madrid’s charming centre has been hollowed out and those legendary all night tapas and outdoor culture gone. Whilst tourism there is nothing compared to Malaga or Barcelona, perhaps they are beginning to feel the pinch.
Those who live in Barcelona and more importantly elected to run it, have to decide where the balance needs to be struck. Their votebase obviously are upset but their reliance on a major industry they raised may not be just the only issue.
In Bilbao and Biscay, the local Government and Councils are abrupt about tourism. They don’t want it.
Malaga, I note has gone all in and kudos to them for focusing on that area and managing it. Off course, they do need local support from a keen votebase. However they have other industries that thrive, agriculture, trade, shipping, fisheries, etc

Stop taxing tourists, tax the ports taking cruise ships, tax the landlords/airBNB rentors. Taxes are never good, but you simply cannot control free movement of EU citizens so any taxes on EU citizens as tourists cannot be legal.
