    I envy you southern guys for the productivity of your environment, but not your humidity. Bee escapes are my sole method for getting bees out of my honey supers. Some hives need a little more time than others.

      Yes I agree. The humidity is awful at times but so far this spring the weather has been awesome for the most part. Just beautiful. Of course hot and humid days are around the corner but that’s just life in the south.

    Hi Bruce - Came across your video on bee escapes. We are getting ready to harvest here in S-Ontario shortly.
    I have a couple of (hopefully) helpful hints for these types of escapes. When removing boxes, put a honey pallet or lid down under the harvested supers in the truck so that bees can't crawl in from below, and then place the bee escape facing up on the top of each stack you've removed. Any bees left in the super will crawl out towards the light as you are harvesting the rest of the supers- and with a solid board underneath - no new ones can get in. If you have a box that didn't clear, try putting a 2nd bee escape on top facing up for a couple of hours and between the two, you might get enough bees cleared without having to make another trip. Take it easy!

There must be a lot of clover somewhere nearby. My bees in other locations are doing fine and we will harvest some this weekend, but they are not nearly as packed as these hives were . • @brucesbees
      @brucesbees  4 года назад +1

      No there were very few bees up in the supers. I smoked the front of the hives to calm them down because I was very busy and moving quickly in front of the hives. I lightly smoked the supers that had a few bees in them and the bees just basically flew away. The two supers that had more bees I just set a box on the ground and and bumped them sharply a time or two and the bees fell out of the bottom. I didn’t use much smoke on the supers. Just a puff or two to drive the bees out.

      I think any of those would have worked. Most of the hives had boxes under the escapes that needed some work; were partially filled out etc. I don’t remember for sure on the big hive that had some bees in the top couple of boxes or the one on the end. Maybe that was the issue? Good question!

  • @bobwebber8521

    I could not get a very good look at your escape method from the video, but there are much easier ways of doing the same thing. The bonus of my method was that once the bee had pushed it's way passed the escape, they could not get back in and had to reenter via the main entrance leaving the boxes totally without bees after a couple of days.

    • @brucesbees

    The thing I don’t like about bee escapes is that you need to pick full boxes up 2 extra times. One to take them off the the hive so you can put the escape on then again so you can put them back on the hive. I have a mix of mediums and deeps that I use for honey and they get heavy. I prefer to use a fume board for a minute or 2 per hive to get the majority of the bees out of the boxes then shake the rest off the frames. I take a frame or 2 out at a time then shake them and move them to a new box.

    • @brucesbees
      @brucesbees  4 года назад +1

      Thanks for checking in. I have done it that way for years or a combination of many different ways. I only have 2 fume boards so I guess I could have bought a bunch more but they just seem to slow me down a bit. For years I have gone through basically every frame on the day of harvest to make sure I didn’t get brood and check to make sure honey was capped. Physically exhausting. I realize there are ways others prefer to do it and I hope everyone will do what they like best.
      I didn’t mind the extra trip to get things prepped and I feel like the bees were set up well having out the queen excluder on the hive a few days earlier. The the actual removal of the honey was so much easier for me. I will be doing a much bigger harvest this coming weekend weather permitting. Will see if things work out as well with 25 or 30 more hives. Time will tell! Thanks again for watching the video and for your input!

    Bruce, As a viewer already mentioned, stand the super on end and blow the bee's out with a blower, or as I sometimes find that all the frames aren't ready for extraction, so I just pull them out one at a time and brush the bee's off. I'm running 50 hives, so it can be done. I wouldn't waste my time and expense of bee escapes and duct tape. Great video.

    • @brucesbees
      @brucesbees  4 года назад

      Thanks for the input and I have tried all of the methods you mention above. The bee escapes are well worth it in my view. I am actually going to buy a battery powered blower to get the few bees that are left out of the supers. If I have to go through to prep the hives anyway so I can prop them up and use the blower quickly then I might as well also use some bee escapes on there to make the job easier. Yesterday I helped a friend who is much bigger than me harvest his honey. He tried out a few of the bee escapes and is now a believer as well. We started out at one of his beeyards where went through each frame as you describe. The bees were feisty and angry and it reminded me of how I have always done it in the past. Not much fun. Then we went to the other yard where the bee escapes were. Completely different experience. Though there were still a few bees in the boxes it was much more pleasant.
      I just believe that each person has to figure out their own way that works best for them. This is simply one method. I actually got the idea from A Canadian Beekeeper’s Blog and I think Devan Rawn also uses them. Both of those guys are much bigger and more famous than me. So I figured if it works for them and if they they consider it worth their time, then maybe it was worth a try!
      Thanks again for checking in. In reality most people probably agree with you and I do not disagree necessarily. I just like how things worked out and plan to confíe using them in the future.🐝🙂

    My mentor tips his supers on edge and uses a leaf blower to clear any bees left behind. I’ve not tried it myself but he swears by it. He recommends full PPE as it really pisses them off but doesn’t seem to harm them. Also, I have better luck with my escapes if a place an empty super or two underneath the bee escape. Gives the bees more space plus seems to put them in panic mode refilling as all their honey just disappeared.

    • @brucesbees
      @brucesbees  4 года назад

      That might have worked better on the big hive. None of the supers were completely empty but there was still some work to be done in most of the hives under the bee escapes. Thanks for the input!

    • @brucesbees
      @brucesbees  4 года назад

      I have used all kinds of techniques in the past including the blower and you’re right; it does seem to really aggravate the bees. That is one thing I am trying to avoid. This was a much more pleasant experience than previous harvests. Of course the blower might not be as bad since there were very few bees.

    • @timHclem
      @timHclem 4 года назад

      brucesbees I don’t use the blower either. My bees are pissy to begin with. I have to suit-up to mow around them. Seems any kind of motorized equipment close by agitates them. I imagine it would look like one of those 1970’s killer bee movies if I fired-up a leaf blower that close to my hives.

    • @brucesbees
      @brucesbees  4 года назад +1

      I hear ya lol though I think that is how a lot of people do it. Everything I have ever done to pull honey has been kind of a miserable experience. Blowing, shaking, bumping, brushing...and going through each frame to look for brood. Yuck! It was ok with just a few hives but has become something I dread just due to the sheer physical work it takes. So I have been planning and scheming for awhile to figure out a better way. Maybe this is it!
