The Demon Books are invisible to the Purgers, only the Demon Player can see them. So they can go ahead and toss them from their inventory with out the worry of anyone seeing them do it :)
I feel like these social deception games need more actions that the players can take. Otherwise it quickly descends into view inventory spamming. What about a demon ability that allows for hiding the demon books in your inventory, but it's one time use with a cooldown? What about the demon being able to survive other monster attacks? It's a great idea... it's just not balanced terribly well yet.
or just scrap that entirely. if anyone requests to see your inventory there's no way to deny them without looking suspicious. I don't really see what it adds to the in its current state except an easy "gotcha" for the Purgers
The inventory checking system very much favours the purgers here. The whole point of a game like this is to sow distrust, so maybe the Demon could plant books in purgers' inventories without them knowing, or the demon books can be collected by special purgers as well to prevent the demon from reaching them.
Purgers can’t see books that aren’t in an inventory, so it seems like the best strategy is that unless it’s obvious that you can grab a book and throw it into a summoning circle to just never keep the books on you. Additionally purgers have access to crosses that protect them from the demon once. The demon can search someone’s inventory and steal the crosses, they can also steal things like UV devices from inventory or when the battery is low.
Seems like the Demon player should have at least one "get out of Baghead free" card to play! I understand they don't want to give the Demon player infinite time, but every game victory was determined by the NPCs, not the PCs!
or maybe immunity to Baghead and the shadow people entirely? it seems kind of cheat that the demon can be offed by other demons and it's an instant victory for the purgers
@@limmiedee7405 Yeah, maybe--you don't want the Demon player having unlimited time, but the other players figuring out who it is would maybe be enough of a ticking clock so they can't just take their time stacking books like CJU was trying to do. :D
The fact that the demon can die to the other demons, and that another player can just immediately out a demon by just asking to check their inventory is a bit… not good? Like the first round you couldn’t do much of anything because you died. And then the second you got outed pretty quickly, entirely defeated the purpose of social deception. It seems like a neat idea, just needs some fine tuning and balance.
Since the purgers lose if they can't identify the demon type AND THE PLAYER. There's practically no reason to get the books to kill anyone, if you don't do anything suspicious, they'll have to guess on the vote. Since you'll auto win against 1 purger, your odds of victory will never go below 66%. As far as I can tell the game has no incentive to kill, the less players there are, and the more suspicious you behave the more likely you'll be found out.
John's 200 IQ play with the invisibility had me rolling in how they thought they let him go. Some shit straight out of a movie. Also good on the devs for having AI threats so that the demon can blend in better and has to be careful about just running off since he needs the help of the purgers just as much while also making it possible for him to win even if he's outed.

I think there are probably ways to get around it, but you have to admit a crowd of people taking turns rifling through each other’s pockets to figure out which one’s a demon is pretty funny. The fact that the demon can just laugh and go on about their business after being found out like John did makes it even funnier. I think the AI threats are more of a problem, because the purgers have to run around the map looking for clues to identify the demon and the demon has to run around collecting three books apiece to stop them, making the odds of everyone dying to an AI a lot higher than the purgers or the demon actually winning a round. Personally I think that would be more annoying than fun.

Cool game concept, but yeah, it's clear it will end up with people just constantly wanting to check inventory. It should have a hefty cooldown or maybe limit it to twice/game. Make it a strategic choice not to be squandered.
You know what I just realized that when the shadow person first showed themselves to John (maybe it's not true maybe it's a cool game mechanic maybe not) it pointed to him now it may be a bit of a long shot, but maybe the other demons (entities in the game) can point out the demon to the purgers especially when the shadow person pointed directly at John when he stopped moving to stare at it. Like I said long shot, but if that was the case of other players being around the demon the shadow person points them out if that's what it represents, but then again it could just be the style of the entity pointing out the demon or the player its hunting.

The "view inventory" feature seems broken....until I realised you can literally drop the Demon books to look like a Purger. Weird to even have it though. I guess the Demon types balances it out so you can't insta win even if you know who it is.
This just seems like a game of 'which side can outlive the npcs'. Not really a social deception game with environmental enemies being more dangerous than the actual players to each other.
This video was hilarious but not because the game was good, lol. I know the game's marked as early access so it's fine that it feels incomplete, but the awkwardness of the demon and the purgers just staring at each other because neither can do anything to each other is hilarious. Aside from the inventory check, seems like it's really hard to hide that you're not helping anyway when the active ability to participate as a fake-purger seems fairly limited. But then identifying the demon seems impossible and then the NPCs are too strong anyway so...lol. Yeah, game's not so ready yet.
I've been waiting to see if you'd play this when it first came out. Might help me decide if I should buy it or not, honestly. Thanks for the entertainment John, as always. 🥰
Really surprised Insym hasn't tried this one out yet. I guess because it is similar to DBD and he has always had an aversion to that game. It's been really depressing seeing how Adam has been posting publicly in response to the lack of interest in this release. I think he tried dumbing the game down because the few people who did check this title out had difficulty understanding it. I don't think that's quite the right approach either. Sure, you want the game to be approachable, but you don't wanna make it too simple either. It's tough making games. Unfortunately not every game is gonna be an instant hit, and some games will perform better than others. I personally have no desire to play it because I neither have friends nor like games like among us, etc. The developer has a real ego and turned a lot of people away with his wttg2 antics I for one am still looking forward to RWS and think it's crazy how much he's put the game off. All that said, I'm looking forward to watching this video and seeing how masks of deception is. I still haven't seen any gameplay footage at all.

Oh I love The Purge. My favorite part is when the main character says "It's purgin' time!" and purges all over those guys
The game felt so bad for killing John on his first time as demon that it gave him another chance 😭 then he immediately gets found out 😂
Everybody waiting on Rides with Strangers and then they go and make this
CJU!!! john and cju are my favorite gaming youtubers, nice to see two worlds collide lol.
This was wonderful to watch!! Fantastic, guys.
I watched this video twice in one day... so far, I hope we get more videos like this!
I really enjoyed this one. I'd watch more of 'em if you decided to play again.
Oooh, yay! I love seeing John play with his friends, thanks for the upload!
I'm just impressed they managed to create a game that wasn't a chore to play/suffer through
That was really fun! Great group! Thank you for playing, John!
John if you don’t play more Mortuary’s Assistant I swear on my life I’ll be disappointed but shortly thereafter will go on about my business and continue watching your videos.
You guys should check his twitch channel, John played the game live like two days ago I think.
@@toxicneamain Yeah, he was 'ending hunting' and got all but one. The VOD should be up, for sure.
@@AngeliqueStP I just checked and it is indeed up. In the title it was mentioned that it was recorded for YT so I guess the video will be on YT in a few days.
hm im going to try and go into this unbiased because it's been quite a few years since the reflect studios incident with the dev...it's very "this era" of game as well so i'm intrigued to see how it will develop from here to set it apart
always love seeing collabs though 😂
I found out about this from a comment on CJU's latest video. Great to see you guys do a co-op.
I think this is the only channel I can have on in the background and know exactly what's going on
This was fantastic! Please keep these coming John!
Dawko running around and checking ppls inventories near the end had me DYING 😂😂😂
Ooooh this a great collab! Got some fantastic people for the video, I love it!
I would love to see more of this!
That was so much fun! I’d love to see more.
The "view inventory" feature seems broken....until I realised you can literally drop the Demon books to look like a Purger. Weird to even have it though. I guess the Demon types balances it out so you can't insta win even if you know who it is.
I don't think I've seen cju here before. Was really stoked for this.
Seems like a fun party game. I dig it.
In concept and aesthetic, this seems like a great time.
So now there’s mummy Phasmophobia and demon Phasmophobia.
This just seems like a game of 'which side can outlive the npcs'. Not really a social deception game with environmental enemies being more dangerous than the actual players to each other.
That was so much fun! I wonder if it's just the first couple of times playing it or it keeps up with the same atmosphere
My name is Dalton. I know it’s not Dolton but it’s close enough John. I am going to start weeping.
Glad to see you again, man. Hope you are doing well
This was fun! Would watch more 🙂
This video was hilarious but not because the game was good, lol.
MY TWO FAVORITE STREAMERS IN ONE VIDEO I'M SO HAPPY
I've been waiting to see if you'd play this when it first came out. Might help me decide if I should buy it or not, honestly. Thanks for the entertainment John, as always. 🥰
Ryan's "Please don't" was just adorable
The developer has a real ego and turned a lot of people away with his wttg2 antics
I for one am still looking forward to RWS and think it's crazy how much he's put the game off.
All that said, I'm looking forward to watching this video and seeing how masks of deception is. I still haven't seen any gameplay footage at all.
