This game is not for everyone, if that ever needs saying. Point to make being that nostalgia is not required to enjoy it. I wish :( I didn't have my PC when that Humble Bundle was around, so I just nabbed this game during the Steam Summer Sale. I do not regret that purchase whatsoever.
TheOnlyDreadfather I like the smoke too! I feel it adds a bit of realism to the atmosphere and also adds a nice dynamic to the difficulty, thus making it a bit more challenging.
I think this is the best video TB has created in a long time. Informative, Direct and Correct! It seems like it should be common sense for a game like this to be on the PC. Lets hope that something does happen.
Damn, i thought that this Serious Sam game would be only graphical and no oldschool feel but i was wrong except that they seem to have taken out the batshit funny cutscenes and the Serious Sam quotes that where the cherry on top of the icecream. I will still get this game though, i have turned my back on this game for too long and you, bloody brit just saved my childhood nostalgia!!!!! I salute you
I played this a few months back and didn't know what to expect as I had never played a Serious Sam game. I was very surprised by how much I enjoyed it and the amount of enemies you fight is insane. You will think you have cleared a stage out and run forward and then the next 1000 enemies run at you and you spend the next 15 minutes running backwards shooting. It's not a master class in gaming but it's a fun old school throwback The graphics look a lot nicer maxed out, this isn't maxed out here
Man, I remember playing SS FE and SE with my brother. Even in splitscreen a few times (though soon learned that one mouse on a computer doesn't make a fair coop). Well, we figured the lan out eventually and fought one another. And I turned the game into a stealth game. I picked a kleer and stood into the shadows. Scared the crap out of my brother, who later began blasting every single shadow with rockets, just in case. Good times, good times.
If you're trying to run the game at really high settings and are getting nasty frame rate issues, make sure super sampling is turned completely off. It's not a necessary feature, but the developers included it for people with really high end systems who would want to try running the game at the highest possible settings. Also, You can always disable ambient occlusion, or turn it down at least. AO doesn't make a HUGE difference, and it can be costly on older systems. Also, great review.
@LionelRaw The game TB mentioned is Arma: Armed Assault. It comes fairly close to depicting what modern armed combat actually is like. You apparently have something like 10km worth of draw distance, and shotguns act like real shotguns, not Quake shotguns. Or, if you've got a bit of a masochist streak, there's always Red Orchestra, set in World War II: Get shot by near-invisible enemy with a bullet drop, projectile-based, non-hitscan weapon; die.
@DuraheLL Old school shooters generally require more thinking than most people think - you've got encounters where you have to retreat to cover and then think about how to approach the issue (which targets to eliminate first? What cover can I use effectively? Where should I move to?), because if you just bust in guns blazing left right and center without forethought, you're gonna get wasted (or at least suffer an unacceptable amount of damage that won't regenerate by itself).
The .357 DE will take 9 rounds with a tenth in the chamber. The problem is that the Desert Eagle has bad problems with jams and .357 and .44 Mag exacerbate the issue since the gas pressures of those cartridges are so lower then .50AE so you get a lot off Failure to Feed or Failure to Eject.
You sir, are both epic and freaking hilarious! I myself have played the Serious Sam game series since it first started when I was like 10, and got epic good at it. If you could someday do a review of the new revamped versions of the original two games that would be awesome. [The Serious Sam HD versions, to be exact].
@BeardedKirklander It is a well-known fact. With Vsync, the program waits until the next verical blank on the screen to flip the buffers, resulting in keyboard or mouse inputs being buffered during the wait and thus delaying them. It's also why performance is usually worse with vsync on. And yes, the whole point of vsync is to eliminate visual tearing. But it comes at a cost, that's why it's not enabled by default.
What you said about modern shooters and not having secrets was spot on. I miss the old Duke Nukem and Doom mass levels of exploring and finding secrets and not getting your hand held through the whole game.
ive just got to the bit where you name a handful of thinking shooters and id like to add another. Bulletstorm. while storywise you are dragged through the levels, navigating is easy etc, but tryna get the good skill points taes quite a good imagination :) just my opinion, i dunno if you end up saying this as i havent finished the video (you mention the game just in different context which you know)
FPSs in the 90s was all about the shooting, the different weapons and power-ups that all looked and felt different, every one of them adding different strategies to how you approach enemy encounters( since enemies all looked and behaved differently ). Of course you had your general purpose weapons like shotguns and machineguns but for more powerfull enemies you needed something with a bit more kick. 90's shooters was also about the complex yet memmorable level design and character.
I actually just finished reading the older comments, I would've commented back sooner, however I was rather busy today, but I digress, I noticed you mentioned a certain game by the name of S.T.A.L.K.E.R., which is rather interesting considering that in the world of FPS, I have only seen that name come up a handful of times.
reminds me of the old Unreal Tournament [which they'd make a remake] & the old quake 3 MP. Another great WTF guide. Have you done WTF is My Partner fore yet?
And TB, the Desert Eagle isn't supposed to have huge recoil when using smaller ammunition. Sniping those enemies is EASY with desert eagle, so you should consider that. Melee is really well as long as you can't get hit while you're executing it and when you're fighting 1 enemy or having more come at you 1 by 1. Really useful against Kleers.
@BeardedKirklander Hi, I'm not sure which of those games feature it the most. But I've seen some pretty bad effects on Source Engine games, especially "Nuclear Dawn" with Tripple Buffering on. :( With vsync off, the "smoothed out" reactions were gone. After asking on the steam forums, I was told that vsync can cause input lag. It really comes down to the implementation and the style of gameplay whether you notice or not, though.
@Defilezz Same shit happened to me. Did you try to replay the part where he says "Do a little dance, make a little love, and get down tonight"? Because that's where it told me the video was gone.
@t0n1cer I was a little confuesd, I thought you were talking about the latest one :P I've seen and heard that it's terrible, Did you play Time to Kill on PS1 I think it was? I enjoyed that
To be fair to this game, the levels are usually either linear, or there are signposts or exit signs leading you through the more maze-like parts. And I really like the smoke effect, because it forces you to adopt new tactics. The sewer level is definitely annoying, though, because of those god damn celing insect things which you can barely see.
TB's WTF series is of first impressions. He seemed to love the game overall since he mentions it in some Painkiller videos. The only game he ever went to do somewhat of a full review was of BioShock Infinite. I particularly enjoyed SS3 out of the series since the early levels eased me into the gameplay progressing into the ridiculously serious final level.
This game is pure nostalgia. The game (once the real action kicks in) brings back the good old memories of Serious Sam. Though personally I think they could have skipped stuff like clips, and it feels they could have had more varied weapons since they let reality come before variation on SS3 sadly. But no biggie, the game is still awesome as hell! And i's the adrenaline I have been searching for for years
@wooterz I think he was saying that Doom has no "see-through" map, as in a transparent map that allows you to shoot stuff while viewing the map (like Duke3d has). Doom has a map all right as you said, but you can't see what's coming at you while looking at it (which I actually kinda like - makes it scarier). But I figure we're just splitting hairs - I know what TB meant in the video and I understood his point. Maps are very oldschool indeed (even if Wolfenstein 3-D had none).
23:45 -- Texture quality is precisely as old school as the Serious engine gets. There was a brief and shining period when Sam had more detail than anything Quake (1, 2 or 3). The oddest bird, though, is still Unreal.
Not only is it not necessary to aim down sights, there's an achievement for never aiming down sights, sprinting, or quick loading your weapon through the whole game.
I loved the old games, especially on serious difficulty. I would host 16 player matches all the time. And the great thing about it is that EVERYONE would want to play my server. But I also remember how we used to have to use the serious deathmatch mod to play deathmatch.
The only modern FPS that still feels like an old-school shooter because of that reliance on different types of weapons to bring down different enemies is the Halo Franchise, like using a weapon to rapidly bring down an enemies shield ( plasma rifle ) then using something like the shotgun or pistol to kill him. And of course open level design. The only game in the 90s that made puzzles a part of the gameplay was HL previous shooters only had very few of them.
I guess it's just a part of growing up during the transition from the 90s puzzle solving to the modern reflex games. During my childhood I've only been exposed to the games rangeing from Half-Life to the begining of the first MW (age from 2-10) so I've only seen the very end of the "Old School" era.
@t0n1cer Appreciate it :) And yeah I know what you mean, I haven't played through the Battlefield campaign because of how many invisible walls, areas you get killed in and QTE in like the first 2 levels there are, its annoying and I have never understood them, Duke Nukem had amazing level design as well, brilliant mix between Linearity and Open world style gameplay aspects.
Why did you remove the multiplayer video. Was watching it but wanted to skip back to see something over again and got the removed message. Really enjoyed it :/
I bet someone's mentioned this already, but, the reason the arena section before the bio-mechanoid was so long was because you missed the Double-Barreled shotgun, heck, in the arena, the sledgehammer was the best choice because Kleers and Gnarrs + sledgehammer = 1 hit kill. Though, you probably don't care about that fact or already knew that, so carry on sir.
So a couple of my friends recently got the Serious Sam Humble Indie Bundle, so I played through the HD versions with them...and it was a nice nostalgic experience...and then we got to the final level of the First Encounter...and how I ever managed to defeat ALL of those Syrian Werebulls...I will never know.
My biggest complaint with this game is it will drag some sections with way more enemy waves than necessary, making sure you've exhausted and are completely bored with every nook and cranny before you're allowed to move on.
Serious Sam games have taken place in Egypt and around the middle east since the late 90's, before COD and this infatuation with mid-east conflicts. The entirety of the First Encounter took place entirely in Egypt, albeit in an ancient setting.
I don't think the smoke is a real design problem, it's actually part of the gameplay, because your cursor changes color when you point it at an enemy. This feature exists since the first Serious Sam and was never really exploited in termes of a game mechanic, but with this smoke, you need to rely on it if you want to know where are your enemies, which makes this color-changing cursor actually useful and creates an interesting game mechanic in my opinion.
Nice vid. Btw size of Desert eagle isnt that much ridiculous, it is really a huge gun, kinda unconfortable to hold in hands for its massive grip (especially .50 version). I know its offtopic, just fyi.
Thanks for the hint but I already did that, almost instantly as soon as I became aware of them. Love 'em. By the way, I bought SS3 now and I am really impressed. I've mostly done single player (currently playing "under the iron cloud") but my forays into multiplayer have all been good fun.

I like this game way more than it deserves. Uneven level design, too many heat scanned enemies, not enough ammo. The gameplay is solid enough that when it gets going, it is really fun. The problem is it doesn't get there often enough.
I had none of the problems you mentioned, I just finished the game solo and loved every second of it.
Play it with mods
@@JSRFModCentral vanilla experience is always the best one for me ı hate mods before finishing game it destroys original product
@@bloodborne410 not in Sam’s case
It helps to have a map.
*"GODBLESS SERIOUS SAM AND GODBLESS TOTALBISCUIT!!!"*
I was quite happy that you enjoyed this game, cause this franchise was one of my favorite ones growing up, and I'm off to watch the multiplayer one. Salutations, TB.
Man, this got suggested to me and hoo boy, do i miss TB
Humble bundle ftw
humble bundle anyone?
I wish :( I didn't have my PC when that Humble Bundle was around, so I just nabbed this game during the Steam Summer Sale.
I do not regret that purchase whatsoever.
I mean he is really bad at playing this game, but who cares? He has fun
TheOnlyDreadfather
I like the smoke too! I feel it adds a bit of realism to the atmosphere and also adds a nice dynamic to the difficulty, thus making it a bit more challenging.
Спасибо, ютуб. Спустя столько лет я должен был увидеть этот шедевр.
Upd: Я... увидел, что произошло с автором канала.
this game is insane
Seeing 872 kills in level stats is the best feeling ever!
Best game ever.
Rest in peace :(
Nothing can beat SS 2 !
Serious Sam 3 is so much better.
I think this is the best video TB has created in a long time. Informative, Direct and Correct! It seems like it should be common sense for a game like this to be on the PC. Lets hope that something does happen.
gotta tell ya totalbiscuit that you are the reason i play most of the games i play i like your voice over and listen to it sometimes as i play
Where’s the serious Sam 4 review lazy reviewer for sure
It might be a bit hard to reach keyboard and mouse from the grave.
Bruh he’s dead…..
I salute you
The cutscenes and lines are there. But TBisc tends to put the game volume rather low compared to his mic volume and often skips cutscenes.
It's not a master class in gaming but it's a fun old school throwback
The graphics look a lot nicer maxed out, this isn't maxed out here
Man, I remember playing SS FE and SE with my brother.
This looks like so much fun , this is what I wanted to do with Duke Nukem Forever, but more intricate level design but run and gun at heart.
well if you like this you will have much more fun with serious sam 2 believe me.
@@LethalAxis Nah Serious 3 is so much better 2, git gud mate.
@DuraheLL
Old school shooters generally require more thinking than most people think - you've got encounters where you have to retreat to cover and then think about how to approach the issue (which targets to eliminate first?
Great vid. Painkiller, Doom, Quake and Duke Nukem are absolutely timeless. OG Fps= True thinking man's games
This game is worth it guys, really funny too way better made then Duke and better jokes.
"this is why kid blood is awsome and i think hippie blood is cool too" wow how fun it sounds out of context
I meant to mention it was a secret, but yeah. That is another thing about classic shooters I liked, it rewarded you for exploration.
ive just got to the bit where you name a handful of thinking shooters and id like to add another.
@melculrapid Make sure you got the patch, it apparently makes the game run like 50% better for less resource consumption to boot.
reminds me of the old Unreal Tournament [which they'd make a remake] & the old quake 3 MP.
TSE will always be the best, had the most variety
Croatian develpoers made the game it's an awesome old school shooter! :D
The only modern (mainstream) FPS game I know of that includes adventures and exploration is FarCry 3.
@Defilezz Same shit happened to me.
Did you try to replay the part where he says "Do a little dance, make a little love, and get down tonight"? Because that's where it told me the video was gone.
That comment combined with your thumbnail is just brilliant.
Was loving the music during the boss fight!
Also, would Uncharted 3 be a 'thinking shooter'?
@t0n1cer I was a little confuesd, I thought you were talking about the latest one :P I've seen and heard that it's terrible, Did you play Time to Kill on PS1 I think it was? I enjoyed that
@wooterz Not everlay map. You cant view map and normal view at the same time. It was introduced in Build engine.
@BeardedKirklander Happy gaming to you too, it's nice to have such a good conversation on youtube for a change. :)
I missed the multiplayer video and would like to watch it. Can someone re-upload it please?
@MrDhamis lolwut? QQ is an old term from Starcraft where you "alt qq" to leave the game. So you're asking if rage quiting got mp removed?
And i's the adrenaline I have been searching for for years
@wooterz
I think he was saying that Doom has no "see-through" map, as in a transparent map that allows you to shoot stuff while viewing the map (like Duke3d has).
Yup! Played the first game as an 8 year old, couldnt resist to get this game now. Feels just as I remembered it
23:45 -- Texture quality is precisely as old school as the Serious engine gets.
During my childhood I've only been exposed to the games rangeing from Half-Life to the begining of the first MW (age from 2-10)
so I've only seen the very end of the "Old School" era.
What recording software does tb use??? I would love to know! Thanks!!
This guy's voice reminds me of Doctor Who... subscribed :-)
Thanks for the hint but I already did that, almost instantly as soon as I became aware of them. Love 'em. By the way, I bought SS3 now and I am really impressed. I've mostly done single player (currently playing "under the iron cloud") but my forays into multiplayer have all been good fun.
