    Driver knew his loco and had excellent control. Very skilfull driving and all credit to his fireman too.

      @@loco42041 The driver and fireman work together, as a team. The fireman had a full head of steam for his driver, you can see the safety valves lifting. So the driver has the confidence in knowing he has enough power to take his heavy train, at slow speed, around a curve, and start to open the regulator to accelerate away with confidence. Read the earlier posts, all recommending both driver and fireman. Very good enginemanship all told.

    this is pretty good for a `black 5` to haul 10 coaches up a slight gradient from a standing start, back in my day in the 50s, this would have been a double headed train no doubt, back then sadly these engines were poorly maintained and consequently never actually fulfilled their potential, but many thanks must be given to all the maintainence staff who keep these lovely engines on the move and also the drivers who manage to achieve the maximum amount of power out of these locos, even so for a 2cyl engine, this is pretty powerful and thanks to the people who produced this splendid video.

    I certainly didn't see any epic problem there. One slip then an excellent piece of enginemanship in getting away on a tight curve with pointwork preventing the use of the sanding gear until the loco was onto plain track. He then used the sands and pulled away nicely with what was quite a big train for a black 5 that was still in a tight curve. Well done sir, done just as it should be, with no fuss and no rixi ulous slipping as is so often the case these days with ham handed loco drivers.

    what struggle ? given tthe tight radius bend about 20 feet from the start, that was a masterclass of steam loco control with a heavy load from a standing start without any slip...

    Why was that an epic struggle? It was a controlled exit so that the train did not wheel slip on the gradient

    It's not clear why 44871 is struggling to depart Salisbury, because there isn't much of an incline here -- as for example there is on Shap Fell, or Ais Gill, near Carlisle, or on the Lickey Hills, near Bromsgrove.....

      Engine not struggling at all. Puzzled by the title. It was a textbook slow start on a very tight curve with quite poorly levelled track. Just pulled off nice and slow to avoid wheel slip. Starting on a tight curve is as, if not more difficult than starting on a straight slope, especially if check rails are in situ. The curves at York station were notorious for producing spectacular displays of wheel spinning and noise as LNER pacifics got their trains under way. Kudos to this driver. Excellent job. Title is nonsense. Nice video though. Well done on your chase justandy333.

      This is a class 5 loco with ten on pulling away from a standing start on tightly curved track. You will notice that as the curve eases the train starts to accelerate nicely. I think it was a skilful piece of driving to keep any wheel spin to an absolute minimum. Of the inclines you mention, banking engines were provided at Tebay for the final ascent to Shap summit, and it wasn't unusual to see two or three banking engines helping a train up the Lickey incline.

    I needed to know why don’t dig a tunnel and do an extension for the main line Train so that they could extend the new abandoned underground stations.
    Why couldn’t they use the part D78 Stock train doors on the sides and also restructure the front face of the A60 and A62 stock and that includes the class 313, class 314 and class 315 remix and make them all together and also redesign them an overhead line and also make them into six cars per units and also having three Disabled Toilets on those six cars per units A60 and A62 stock trains and also convert the A60 and A62 stock trains into a Scania N112, Volvo TD102KF, Volvo D10M, Volvo B10M, Gardner 6LXB, Gardner 6LXC and Gardner 8LXB Diesel Engines and also put the Loud 7-Speed Voith Gearboxes even Loud 8-Speed Leyland Hydra cyclic Gearboxes in the A60 and A62 stock, class 313, class 314, and class 315 and also modernise the A60 and A62 stock and make it into an 11 car per unit so it could have fewer doors, more tables, computers and mobile phone chargers.
    A Stock Trains and also having 8 Disabled Toilets on those A stock trains. why couldn’t we refurbish and modernise the waterloo and city line Triple-Track train tunnel and make it bigger and extend it to the bank station, making it into a Triple-Track Railway Line so those 4 European countries such as Germany, Italy, Poland And Sweden to convert the waterloo and city line Triple-Track Train tunnel into a High-Speed train?
    The Third Euro tunnel Triple-Track Train line to make it 11 times better for passengers so they could go from A to B. then put the modernised 11 car per unit A Stock and put them on a bigger modernised waterloo and city line Triple-Track train tunnel so it could go to bank station to those 4 European countries such as Germany, Italy, Poland And Sweden. The modernised refurbished 11 cars per unit A stock could be a High Speed The Third Triple-Track Euro Tunnel Train So it is promising and 37 times a lot more possible to do this kind of project that is OK for London Germany, Italy, Poland And Sweden.
    oh by the way, could they also tunnel the Triple-Track Railway Line so it will stop from Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire and Essex so that the Passengers will go to Germany, Italy, Poland and Sweden and also extend the Triple-Track Railway Line from Bank to Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire and Essex Stations so that more people from there could go to Germany, Italy, Poland And Sweden Easily.
    Why couldn't they extend the Piccadilly line and also build brand-new underground train stations so it could go even further right up to Clapton, Wood Street and also make another brand new tunnel train station in Chingford and could they extend the DLR?
    All of the classes 150, 155, 154, 117, 114, 105, and 106, will be replaced by all of the Scania N112, Volvo TD102KF, Volvo D10M, Volvo B10M, Gardner 6LXB, Gardner 6LXC and Gardner 8LXB Diesel Six carriages three disabled toilets are air conditioning trains including Highams Park for extended roots which is the Piccadilly line and the DLR trains.
    Could you also convert all of the 1973 stock trains into an air-conditioned maximum speed 78 km/hours (48 MPH) re-refurbished and make it into a 8 cars per unit if that will be alright, and also extend all of the Piccadilly train stations to make more space for all of the extended 8 car per unit 1973 stock air condition trains and can you also build another Mayflower and Tornado Steam Locomotive Companies and they can order Every 17 Octagon and Hexagon shape LNER diagram unique small no.13 and unique small no.10 Boilers from those Countries such as Greece, Italy, Poland, and Sweden, can they make Mayflower and Tornado Steam Locomotive speeds by up to 117MPH so you can try and test it on the Original Mainline so it will be much more safer for the Passengers to enjoy the 117MPH speed Limit only for HS2 and Channel Tunnel mainline services, if they needed 16 Carriages Per units can they use those class 55’s, class 44’s, class 40’s and class 43HST Diesel Locomotive’s right at the Back of those 18 Carriages Per Units so they can take over at the Back to let those Mayflower and Tornado Steam Locomotive’s have a rest for those interesting Journeys Please!!, oh can you make all of those Coal Boxes’s 16 Tonnes for all of the 117MPH Mayflower and Tornado Steam Locomotive’s so the Companies will Understand us PASSENGER’S!! so please make sure that the Builders can do as they are Told!! And please do something about these very important Professional ideas Please Prime Minister of England, the Prime Minister of Sweden, the Prime Minister of Germany, the Prime Minister of Italy, the Prime Minister of Poland and that Includes the Mayor of London.

    EPIC STRUGGLE !! ?? CHANGE THE TITLE PLEASE ! THIS WAS NOT A STRUGGLE AT ALL, IN FACT, IT WAS ONE OF THE MOST MEASURED AND CONTROLLED STARTS IN A DIFFICULT SITUATION I'VE SEEN.

      It should have been a fairly standard start. But what some "puffer nutters"", (idiots among enthusiasts), do, and have been caught doing, is turning hand brakes on in carriages to listen, and even record engines struggling with the extra "load" created by brakes being slightly on. The Transport Police should go after these dickheads and not only charge them with endangering life, but ban them from ever travelling on any excursion trains again..ever!! Problem solved!!

      @@125sloth The loco crew would know if the brakes were on because the brake pipe pressure would drop below 21 inches, and they have no access to mechanically operated brakes on the train.

      I am talking about IF a carriage is fitted with handbrakes, and many old ones are. The crew would not know if handbrakes were turned partly on. I have seen idiots do it to record engine sounds labouring, and they do it on hills so as not to be detected. There is a very good Coroners report into a fatal crash with a steam excursion train in Australia, where the Coroner found that this stupid behaviour may have contributed to engine stalling. Look up Coroners report into 3801 crash, where a commuter train ran into the back of the excursion train, after going through a GREEN signal, caused by sand over track circuits from the steam train struggling, and causing signals to fluctuate. That can't happen now, but is good reading of how silly some "enthusiasts" are.

    An old trick when leaving the north end of York is to back down on the brake van at the train's rear and use the buffer compression to give the engine a push.

    4.3 to 1 not about screen ratios but about the benchmark adhesion factor that most steam engines are designed to be near to in order to give the best outcome in terms of weight-slip-power appliable. The driver was brilliant with smallish engine in edging round that curve where flange friction (wheels) must've been v high making it V difficult to apply just enough power, but not too much, to get train moving without slipping!

    Wow. Superb video Andy. I'm pleased to see that shot from Theale. I would've gone there but a 45 minute Black 5 stopped me. The shot from Theale is better than most of my shots as 1) you use a tripod not a monopod and 2) there is no wind noise. Well done

    Lucky it was departing from platform 2 and not 4 because it may have still been there, the radius is a lot tighter. Certainly had the sanders working overtime, great action video.
