Yes you have to replace the chip if machine shows toner empty message. If you didn't replace chip, every time you switch on the machine it will show non genuine cartridge installed message and you have to reset it every time.
Yeah its universal type but in some case it doesn't suit to machine ...so whenever u buy that just see their packaging label ..where all suitable model have written.
