    In this episone we change the oil of the ZF 8HP transmission installed in our 2013 SDV6 Discovery 4. This step-by-step procedure is for entertainment only. It may look like as we know what we are doing but be warned, we never did this before and you should think twice before you do this like we did. LR Time Vera&Christian is not reliable for any kind of "ever since we followed your advice" problems. Hope you enjoy the video and thanks for watching,

    Oh, you guys, there's that German precision again, even moving the snow off your driveway, such straight lines and right angle precision.
    Apparently precision isn't practiced by my local Toyota dealer, had my new Toyota serviced midweek they've put about half a litre too much oil in the engine sump I'd estimate, so I guess, "near enough is good enough" here in Northern Australia, it's only a Toyota after all...
    Good to see you're Matt's off road recovery fans too 👍.

    I remember when I was a teenager I was helping my father change the oil in a manual transmission in his Mitsubishi. The transfer case as well. The method I settled upon in order to get the thick oil into those units, when you couldn't simply pour them in, was rather elaborate but it worked. Took each bottle and stuck it on a long flexible clear hose, put the other end inside the unit to fill. Inverted the oil bottle; cut hole in bottom of bottle, which was now the top, and inserted tip of blowgun from air compressor. Kept pressurizing the bottle which force the fluid down through the hose and into the transmission. It was slow but it worked

    I did a full transmission service 2 years ago on my LR3. Started having shift issues with 2nd gear. Took it to the LR dealer in town, they said there was nothing wrong with it🙄. Took it to an actual LR specialist shop, they said the transmission was going bad and plan on getting another vehicle 🙄. Did some research and decided to do a full service, changed the solenoids and sleeves. Total cost for parts, fluids and couple of cokes was $700. Took a couple of days because it was a big ass job. Finished up, reset the adaptations and it has been perfect. Many trips off-roading in Southern Utah and last summer a trip to Santa Cruz, CA and San Francisco, CA from Utah. Roughly 35,000 miles over last 2 years. Freaking Land Rover Dealer in Salt Lake City, don't bother.

      Hi! I have a 2007 LR3 and it gives me the P0730 code and also the code saying it has an issue shifting from 2-3 and 3-4th. It will then Fault and limit gears. However, I can drive it fine in manual mode (not sport, but actual manual shift through all the gears myself). I've changed fluid, 4 rubber tubes, and the figure 8 seal and cleaned solenoids, but not replaced the solenoids. I can't find the problem. I'm told that the tranny is probably shot if I get the P0730 code and to get another tranny. Do you think a new set of solenoids might fix it? Or does it sound like I need another transmission? any advice is appreciated. 🙂 thanks. Josh

      @@JoshJuetten I would try the solenoids, that solved my problems. Worth taking them out and testing in the least. My experience is that these transmissions are not failing, rather it is the solenoids and and seals. My advice, replace the solenoids.

    Another great video. However, for those of us in the UK less brave than Christian and Vera, I would suggest taking your Automatic Disco to a proper Automatic transmission specialist to change and flush the transmission, such a 3D Transmissions in Reading. Many ordinary garages cannot do this properly.
    If you have a 6 speed Auto Disco 3 and it develops a vibration under acceleration between 2,000 and 3,000 engine revs and /or the rev counter needle starts to fluctuate up and down by +/- 250 RPM under load, the chances are that you transmission fluid desperately needs changing and maybe the control module on top of the gear box need replacing.
    On early Disco 3’s the oil pan will be metal and needs replacing with the newer plastic one with the integral filter. It is vital that the transmission oil temperature is cold, therefore if you are waiting while the flush procedure is completed, you will need to take a good book to read. 3D will not start work on your vehicle for 2 hours, until the correct, cool oil temperature is achieved.
    A flush is far better than an oil change, because the torque converter contains so much fluid that will remain in the system unless it is properly flushed.
    This procedure will usually cure the vibration and fluctuating engine RPM issues, but it might take 50 miles of driving before it fully corrects itself.
    It is not an expensive operation for a specialist to do and very well worth it being done.

      but
      lifetime is anything between 60.000 to 100.000 km depending to the brand
      lifetime is mentioned but not the rest of it,
      so if any problem will came ... the car is mostly out of any warranty
      80% of defects are due to n.o.k. oil - better change always after some period

That way I don't have oil spots on my driveway or the smell of burning oil as the exhaust heats it up. Not necessary but it's faster to saw a bottle in half than it is to scrub spots off white cement.

    Hi Vera and Christian, I strongly recommend you go for a proper flush when I see the condition of the oil you got out and the age of the car. I have a 4.4 TDV8 Range Rover with the ZF 8HP and initially my Land Rover dealer did what you do (3-4 litres change without changing the filter and pan), which didn’t really improve the behaviour of the gearbox. I went this year to a garage that has a transmission flush machine, which allows to flush all the gearbox including the torque converter and cooler. The gearbox is now super smooth when cold again and shifts much faster. As the oil wears slowly with time, we don’t realise the difference and a not maintained 8HP is still shifting better than a lot of other transmissions on the market. Go for the flush and pan change!

    • @Vera_and_Christian
      @Vera_and_Christian  2 года назад +6

      Maybe the garage did not reset the adaptation values and the 2nd place did. Mine shifted much faster after the work. I don’t think the shift speed had anything to do with the oil quality. The oil which came out looked clean and clear. I will do the next change with filter in two years but when it is warmer. One thing will never take place: one of our cars in a service shop. I rather push it of a cliff 😂 sure it is better to do a flush but a oil change is better than nothing. Thanks for your comment. Christian

    Hi Vera & Christian, important feedback from the TOYOTA owners down under. I just measured this with my German Holzgliedermaßstab (wrongly called a Zollstock): We TOYOTA Whatscruiser drivers don't need necessarily a Skidplate as my ground clearance is 500mm to under the engine. We just have them for fun or when daily driving over the crocs and roos here. And we also don't need this not council approved "Grube" as we can just roll underneath our Whatscruiser without lifting it. No fuse to remove either. Btw. good news, after 12 years our Whatscruiser Denso alternator started to make some minor noise. Finally something to fix. Two new bearings and a brush set should do it. I will also change out all V-belts, I think they are about 10 years in, still look good. But it's so boring that I will just change them. Thanks for the oil change video anyway, I've got the same gearbox in my X3 here. Best regards from Perth

      Hello Alex, I posted early today, hoping to still catch some clicks from Australia before bed time. The closest we come to drive over a crock is, if our marten (Marder) eats his lunch sitting on the engine block. In fact, what Vera calls a skid plate keeps the critters out of the engine bay. Our Freelander was all open and there was often leftover bird remains rotten in the engine bay. The curb stones at the mall are only 25cm high and allow passage in regular height. What a well designed vehicle. Talk to you soon. Christian

    Oil comes out from drain plug because the right fill-up must be checked with the engine running at idle and transmission oil temp at 35 degrees 😜

    Great fun video you two, Vera's voice over is the best - oh my God! Ok so one point, when first opening the oil level/filler plug a lot of oil discharged. Was it over-filled previously? ZF boxes are the best by a mile, but need their "regular" oil change or else failure. Service pits are frowned on but sum wheel chocks would be an essential safety item, Dyno straps are probably out of the question. Warm the garage first with a propane space heater, will help in your very chilly climate. I would have liked to see the filter go in but your vehicles receive more TLC than virtually any other. Just one more point, would you recommend a manual over an automatic when buying a Discovery 3/4? Cheered up my start to the day now on with my Sunday chores!

    • @Vera_and_Christian
      @Vera_and_Christian  2 года назад +1

      Hello Bob, Without the engine running, the oil flows into the pan and this is why there was oil comming out of the fill plug when I opened it first. I think this is normal. This is why the level check is done with the engine running. The LR4 is not available with a manual transmission. Only the LR3 up to 2009 is. I think the manual transmission suits the "weak" 190 hp Diesel very well and it makes it fun to drive. But the automatic is also really nice, especially in traffic. Christian

      @@Vera_and_Christian Thanks Christian, slightly strange engine running requirement, but dry sumps are the same, it's all a case of packaging I guess. Is the 3 manual significantly more economic that the auto? I read somewhere that the 3litre was better thermally than the 2.7... i.e. more efficient.

    A lot of time and money wasted i think , it's better just to have the transmission Flushed . But changing some of the gearbox oil ( diluting old oil ) is better than doing nothing ( like Toyota owners ) i suppose .

    Christian, I recommend just removing the negative battery cable instead of pulling the fuse because they are not designed for frequent removal and therefore might weaken the connection at the fuse box thereby causing erratic behavior which then might necessitate the complicated and expensive task of replacing the fuse box.

    I am surprised that software you install in your mobile phone as a diagnostic tool for Discovery 3/4. What is its name? And how the LR4 communicate with your mobile? Is it from Land Rover? How accurate is it? Will it cover all features on LR4? Finally, I appreciate very much each program you and your partner have uploaded so far. I really love the program on the LR3 engine recondition. You have explained to me many details I looked for but only found in LR manuals - hard to understand.

    Another great video. I have a D3 and I'm getting transmission faults and limited gears only ( F on dash) it's going into the garage next week but I feel it's going to be expensive so I think I will be selling my D3. Would low transmission oil put up the fault I'm getting.

    • @any0n378
      @any0n378 2 года назад

      It could be, but the most likely cause on the ZF6HP26 is solenoid/seals failure on the Mechatronics unit. These transmissions also blow bushings, but it is less frequent. You can search for ZF6HP26 transmission problems on RUclips and you will find a lot of good info. If you take it to a shop they will most likely tell you that the transmission is bad and needs to be replaced which is a $5000+ job. Best to take it to a transmission specialist that knows these transmissions (BMW specialists do) if you are not comfortable wrenching on it yourself.

    • @any0n378
      @any0n378 2 года назад

      It doesn't help that Land Rover tells their customers that the transmission is a sealed unit. These transmissions need their fluids changed every 60K Miles.

    Christian and Vera - a question if you don't mind? I'm on holiday in Belgium in my Disco 3 with my caravan, driving to Liverpool on Tuesday. I am occasionally experiencing slipping revs and shudder. I think that maybe my gearbox oil needs changing. I don't know if the torque converter is already damaged. I have 2 tubes of Dr. Tranny. Should I find a garage and ask them to put the Dr Tranny in my gearbox or ask them the change the oil before putting the Dr Tranny in it.

  • @agwatcher
    @agwatcher 2 года назад

    Avoid resetting the adaptation unless you have done at least a partial rebuilt to fix excessive correction values. The adaptation gets updates all the time, but you essentially reset it to make the gearbox run outside of optimal pressure and time delays until it re-learns what it already knows. That may trigger mechanical problems on worn transmissions.
