Dear KhanHs, thank you for making this video so detailed and thorough. I rarely do something by myself, but your video really helped me to install mine Xtrons alone.
I have a E38 with the exact same spec as you have DSP, SATNAV etc in the boot. From what I understand. With the Resler USB I-BUS module. You can keep the DSP amp if you purchase a A DSP licence from I-BUS. Also the only cables you have to route to the rear. Is the Antenna cables. Because both the radio and GPS antenna amplifier is placed in the rear. Radio in the C pillar, and the GPS also some place in the back Under the rear window window I think
Really nice video, thanks for going to all the trouble of one handed installation to record it! Do you know if the original BMW TV unit can be retained? There's a lot of connections on the back of the Xtrons unit, could one be for the TV input?
Thanks for the feedback. There are loads of connections behind the unit, could possibly use one of the AV Inputs but I haven't tested as mine was analogue so no use anyway unless you've had it upgraded to digital TV.
How has this unit held up over the past year? Been looking into Xtrons for my E39 but keep reading mixed reviews on quality and durability with the unit. They look nice!
Thanks so much for this video. this helps alot on my install im having audio issues with. Couple questions 1) with the extension harness for dsp, i should get sound right? i dont NEED the ibuss app/dongle, it just improves the experience? 2) what power wire did you tap off of for the reverse camera? and does it activate and switch input when you put it in reverse? because my experience has always been to tap onto the reverse light wire, but tht is in the body of the vehicle not the trunk lid, where the camera is. thanks for the help
1) Incorrect, you also need the DSP licence in order to use the DSP amp which means you also need the ibus app/dongle 2) I used the supplied trigger wire with the reverse camera which is a yellow RCA cable with an extra red wire on both ends. @22:25 It essentially carries power from the head unit to the reverse camera. One end is tapped in behind the head unit and other end to the camera. Ideally you then ground to the body but the camera worked for me without attaching a ground so I left it like that.
How are you liking the unit? I’ve been waffling between this and the AVIN AVANT 4. I want wireless car play but am also contemplating a full blown 10.25” screen. I originally wanted to maintain an OEM look but if it’s the same price for a larger screen I might just go for it.
I'm enjoying the unit. It's very responsive and I like the fact that its android so I can have Waze and use power poweramp along with the iBus App etc. I'd recommend the Avin Avant 4 if you want to keep it looking OEM as possible. I personally think the 10.25" screens look out of place. But they can be useful for having 2 apps open side by side or a large map when using the Nav I guess. I haven't checked but I think the larger screen ones are slightly more price wise. Get whichever one suits your needs. I think i only ever use the Nav & setup shortcut buttons on mine and the occasional turn of the volume knob 😄 I mostly use steering wheel controls for music.
Great video, just bought the xtron unit for my tourer. Just a quick question do you need the extension cable for the radio? As you get the little adaptor
You will need the extension cable if your nav is in the boot like mine. As the front is just a screen. The unit in the back is what has all the connections for gps & radio etc. I didn’t extend my gps cable as I just used the adapter from xtrons which works perfectly and never dropped gps signal.
The extension harness is for cars with Navigation as the connections are in the boot/trunk. If you don't have the nav then your connections should be behind the radio/dash.
Hey man, really informative video! Love it. Installed my xtrons radio today, just wondering if you know this. I didn't bother extending the factory antenna cable since I wanted to use dab+ instead. Now looking on the site they want me to buy a USB dongle, can't I just connect a normal window mount dab antenna? Hope you can help me out!
You can mount the antenna but for DAB to work you need the USB dongle which is extra. I’ve also heard there are issues with reception with the Window mounted antennas which is why I’ve not bothered with DAB on my car.
@@KhanHS hmm weird haha, it's quite a lot of stuff to figure out. Just ordered the stuff I need for ibus to work and see how that goes. Might do the antenna later then... And rip half the interior out again 😂 thanks anyways for the video again! Helped me out a lot
@@KhanHS - Thanks for the quick reply mate. I ordered the Xtron 8.8" unit for my E46 a couple of days ago and it's good to know that the turnaround time is quick if anything should go wrong with the unit Now that you've had yours for a while, are you still happy with it?

I'm hoping you can help me. I have a 2006 x5 bmw with DSP audio. I bought a PSA7053B. I did not receive an installation manual, still hoping XTRONS will send one. I also bought the 6 meter adaptor cable. My understanding is this makes the install easy. I plug in XTRONS head to adaptor cable. I plug adaptor cable into DSP Unit. Same as E38 with DSP. The XTRONS head powers up when I connect ACC wire to +12v. Bluetooth works. But, I get no audio. When I look at the wiring, there are only 3 wires that connect to the BMW DSP Unit. Hi mate me again got the xtron in the car can you give me a bit more info on how the backup camera wires in as it doesn’t come on I know I’m waiting on a new one but want to get all the wires put away cheers
Sorry for the late reply. If you're still having trouble then what i got with my reverse camera was a yellow AV type cable which had a trigger wire (red cable) on each end. One end went to one of the wires behind the head unit. Cannot remember what it was labeled from the top of my head and the other end, the trigger wire connected to the red wire on camera side. On camera side there will be a ground which you can attach to the bare metal of the boot/trunk or as in my case just tape it off. The head u it is grounded so even without connected the ground for the reverse camera it still works for me.
Do you get watsapp calls to work on the xtron. I am having an issue where the radio mutes momentarily and then returns. And I cannot hear the call audio neither can the other party hear me. Regular mobile calls are ok though.
Thanks to this video, I completed to install android head unit myself. Really appreciated. I have a question. My car has original DSP system in trunk, so I'd like to know whether I have to buy ibus module and license. There is no sound issue after installation. 🥲 I'm looking forward to more videos from you.
If you have DSP, you will need the ibus app+module+DSP licence in order to get sound from the dsp amp. Some people have also kept the original headunit in the loop as a work around (kept in the glovebox) but I'm unsure how to wire that in.
Hi mate just bought a xtron unit and reversing camera for my e39 but the camera seems poor quality doesn’t fit to well and had to put the switch for my handle in it but does not work with the xtron handle did you have any problems if not I’ll contact xtron many thanks
hi man, ive isntalled the same headunit. but after the install i got terrible audio quality. even tho i put new rockford speakers in, any clue at what it might be? i got the normal stereo setup. no harman kardon or such, cheers
I think that might be down to the low quality head unit. Doesnt sound bad for me as I have dsp. I believe Avin do a special dsp inside their headunits which boosts audio quality for non oem DSP cars. Or it could be due to the amp you are using with your aftermarket speakers. You didn't leave the oem amp in did you?

I'm no expert on this subject but if you were going to bypass the DSP amp then you'd be using an aftermarket amp which I assume you'd install into the boot/trunk so you'd still need to use some sort of cable to run from the amp to the headunit? Plus you'd then need to slice the OE harness to wire up the speakers to the new amp too.
