Bread from the haybox

  • Bread from the haybox, no oven required, just the stove and of course the haybox! There is something particularly awesome if you save in energy and let just warm water do the trick. You end up with a lovely loaf of bread. Not really with a brown crust, but even though I like the crust of just baked bread, it swiftly becomes hard and stale. So here is my recipe for a perfect bread (in the video I use a bit less, because I don't have a big pot to cook my bread in)"
    Ingredients:
    340 gr (2 3/4 cup) whole wheat flower
    170 gr (1 1/3 cup) flour
    300 ml (1 1/4 cup water
    2 teaspoons of dried yeast
    2 teaspoons of salt
    1 tablespoon of oil

    This is a really good haybox. I made mine from a wooden box and these blankets painters use to cover furniture while painting. I will steal the idea of cover the inside with this reflectory material. Sorry for my bad Englisch.
    I defintifly try to make bread in my haybox. So happy you shared this. Blessings from Bavaria Germany. Stay safe.

    Gosh your quick little drawing was amazing! You’re very talented!
    Your hay box is very cute. Much cuter than what I’m planning. I’m going to use a drinks cooler on wheels, what we call an Esky here in Australia. It’s ugly blue and white plastic but I need it to transport frozen food when I move so it makes sense to reuse it. Maybe I’ll paint it or glue fabric to it.
    It’s lovely listening to you speak. Reminds me of my Oma. I miss her. I’m going to subscribe both for the content and to enjoy your accent 😊

    I actually was wondering about the possibilty of making bread this way and you showed it can be done; bravo! Makes me think about the time when I was very small and traveling in France and had my first artisan baked very dark bread from a village bakery. It was more on the moist side and had no real signs of a heavy crust... I never forgot that amazing structure, taste and bite; you seem to make something similar and I'm going to try a sourdough version. Thanks so much for the inspiration! PS: Your thermal box looks awesome and you have a pleasent demeanor. You must be very creative no!? Blessings ; D

    Do you freeze your flour for at least 10 days before you use it for baking? Unless you grind it fresh from wheat berries.other wise all store bought flour have weevils eggs in it.I freeze then sift very well.

    • @Dutchhomestead
      @Dutchhomestead  2 года назад +2

      Thank you for this tip. I buy my flour directly from an old fashioned mill. I usually buy 5 kg whole wheat and 2,5 kg white flour. That gets used up in roughly a quarter of a year, so I do not have spotted bugs yet. But I guess that if I would use the flour in a longer time span it is definitely worth it to put it in the freezer!

    Thankyou for the interesting video. I love your tree lamp!😊I see many videos where people have their food and spices in glass jars as decorations. I was taught that food and spices last longer in the dark. I guess if you eat a lot it doesn’t matter?😅

    • @Dutchhomestead
      @Dutchhomestead  Год назад

      Yes you are absolutely true, I do have some spices in the dark that I pack in bigger quantities, like my chilly powder, that lives in the cupboard under the stairs. But indeed some of the spices loose their colors a bit and probably also the taste. But as long as you use them quite often and have them in small quantities, it is okay I gues. Thank you for liking the tree lamp, I like the natural vibes :-) Wishing you a happy New Year from the Netherlands!

    Hoi! Leuke video. Uitstekend Engels, alleen in de beschrijving heb je het over “flower”. Dat is een bloem die in de tuin groeit. Bloem waarmee je bakt is “flour”. Ik was opzoek naar info over de hay box, en zo kwam jij op mijn pad. Prachtige hay box heb je gemaakt! Succes met je channel.

      It is 70 x 50 cm, and 40 cm high (so that you can also put in larger pots). I wish you all the best if you are considering making your own hay box, it is not that hard to do.

    • @Dutchhomestead
      @Dutchhomestead  Год назад +2

      Sure, it actually started out its live as a box I made to do the plant potting in (to prevent soil getting everywhere - but in the end, soil still got everywhere :-)) So thereafter I turned it into the hay box it is now. I will make a separate video on it. Wishing you a happy New Year from the Netherlands!

    Waarom in het Engels zijnde 100% Nederlandse? En dan nog even deze, waarom koopt u een broodbakmachine als u die niet eens voor de helft van wat ze doet en kan gebruikt? Dan kan je beter investeren in een goede menger waarbij je gewoon de volledige hoeveelheden aan zaken meteen kan inkieperen om je deegmengeling te maken en degelijk te kneden. De hooikast ziet er mooi uit, dat geef ik grif toe en mee.

      Maybe she wants to practice her English. Maybe she wants people all over the world to enjoy her videos. Cooking bread in the hay box seems complicated but is she runs out of electricity she can still cook bread, as long as she can boil water first. So, five minutes of boiling the water but then she can bake bread. Interesting.
      I wish our Papa had taught us Dutch. 😅

      @@granmabern5283 De energie die ze niet gebruikt tijdens haar koken en bakken gaan hier helemaal op aan het licht dat ze aan moet hebben om zo vroeg aan het koken en bakken te gaan. Ook de omgeving verwarmen omdat ze zo vroeg ( en koud in de koude en koudere maanden van het jaar ) moet opstaan maken dat ze helemaal geen winst maakt. Mijn vrouw kookt ook vaak op deze wijze, maar niet om 4u45 in de nacht beginnen daarom hoor.

      Thank you all for your reactions. To be honest, I'm just an early bird. And indeed, I do like to practice my English, how imperfect it still might be. I love to share and I do think that I can reach more people when presenting my videos in English. That I do use the light in the early mornings is absolutely true. And in a bread baking course I've learned that the most perfect dough mixing is done with a bread machine. I bought the one I have now at a charity shop. Wishing you all a happy new year!
