Hey, I just got back from whiteface mountain and I loved that scenic drive all the way up. I drove from NYC, Queens with my Kia Spectra 06. I upgraded my vehicle last year and took care of its maintenance which is why I didn't hesitate driving towards these whiteface adirondack appalachian mountains. I drove to Lake George, Whiteface mountain and then to Niagara Falls, NY. After driving to the summit, I hiked with my 6 year old daughter to the top and we both enjoyed it. It started raining on our way down and my little girl slipped few times while I was holding her hand from these rocks. Glad, she wasnt hurt thanks to almighty God. Before traveling to such locations, check all 4 tires, brakes, engine oil, transmission oil, power steering oil, brake oil, steering wheel, anti-freeze, and windshield washer etc. As long you dont see a check engine light on your dashboard while driving to the mountains thats all it matters. I did 1500+ miles of driving within 4 days. It was a great adventure though.
Thanks for the trip up Whiteface. We will be camping in the Adirondacks in a few weeks and I was looking for something to do. I knew biking, hiking, boating . . . but I also wanted a drive. I'll pack a lunch for the break on the way down.
Just found your channel. It amazes me that you are doing this alone. I don’t think I could do this. But, I so enjoy watching the videos. Lily is so adorable. She looks like my girl Lilo.

The Adirondacks are incredibly underrated. I grew up in upstate NY and everyone I knew took vacations to Lake Placid. I currently live in Ohio and am amazed at the amount of people who don't even know the Adirondacks exist.
Get a cheap laser thermometer. Check tires, brakes and wheel bearings every fuel stop. It will tell you you have an issue before you have a breakdown. If something is getting hot it is a warning, especially if three wheels are cool and one is hot. You will know when your brakes are cool enough to proceed. $20-$30.

Wow Amber, thanks for pointing out the hot brakes problem. I will find someplace to park my travel trailer, unhitch, then ascend and decend the mountain. Going to Blue Ridge mountains later, have a KOA booked to park before I explore. Thanks again, stay Beautiful.
This was a summit drive, in and out, for hiking. There’s no parking and nobody with anything bigger than a van should make this drive. Certainly not in a trailer. So I would never have pulled a trailer up to the summit.
Hi Amber, I've been watching a lot of Cesar Millan dog videos and others, and just thinking that Lily may be starting to exhibit problem behavior (resource guarding). You may want to nip it (no pun intended :) in the bud before it escalates. I have a sweet little dog that we got from a shelter a couple of months ago, but come to find she's very unfriendly around new people and that's a problem I want to rectify, hence all the dog videos. I enjoyed your video today. Enjoy your spa time!

I was just at Whiteface Mountain a couple of days ago. We took the elevator up but then a storm rolled in and they shut the elevator down, so we HAD to take the "stairs" down (there is steps at the bottom, but the rest is basically rock climbing) 27 stories. My arm and leg muscles still hurt lol, but I'd do it again in a heartbeat for the view up there. Wish I filmed it though, it was wild when the thunderstorm rolled in around me on those rocks.

Hot brakes is a distinctive smell! They may not have destroyed them, but if you smell them it too close for my comfort- my daughter heated my brakes just to the point of smelling them on one of the hills right next to our house once. I've had to drive despite stuck brakes once too!
Lily and my little Ichabod would make a perfect pair lol He's a Jack Russell/Chihuahua mix and does that face but if someone keeps taunting he will follow through
Crazy descent. Glad you made it safely! I’m inspired by your videos! Thinking of doing the same or moving to Mexico! Can I ask who did your van build out? I’m sure it’s in one of your videos, or drop a link to it?
Beautiful up there! Biking will, or should, eventually help your knee. I wondered about "tapping" your brakes, though: with ABS (assuming you've got it), tapping can actually lock up the steering. Better to ride them gently and pull off as needed as you did. Speaking of bikes, I did have to admire the technique of the cyclists on descent as you passed them. Wow.
Many world class athletes train there, many different sports. There is an Olympic training center in Lake Placid which hosts many competitors in training from around the world.
You're right in my country there Amber. My first job in Wilmington was 3rd shift permanent pump house operater on Whiteface mountain ski center for my first 2 years. I can remember skitching down the mountain at 7am every morning. beautiful winter sunrises 🌄 thanks for your efforts and upload 👍
@@storychasing we were in the middle of nowhere I was frantically looking for a place for us to stop. Finally found a gas station and we just stayed there for about an hour to let them cool. Seriously, there was smoke coming off the brakes. I couldn’t figure out what the burning smell was till I saw the smoke. Mountain was so steep it was inevitable!
Go to Jamestown and Yorktown near Williamsburg va.in Jamestown do the state park- not the historical theme park. Free ferry over the river too.glassblowing place in the state park- working but at a historical site of an old glass furnace.
I like to look at white face from a distance preferably donley's farm which you can see white face clearly on a sunny day. My family have been on white face but most times I was absent but the idea of climbing up it hahaha never...
Im not Click and Clack but I learned using low gear is what you need to do in situations like you experienced Use Lower Gears to Go Downhill When you start to head back downhill, use your engine and transmission to slow the car down instead of the brakes. Shift to a lower gear before you start heading downhill, as this will help slow down the car without you having to ride the brakes, says the National Park Service.
@@storychasing holy cow and you still had to lay on your breaks?! Damn I would have made a poopy in my pants had it been me! Thank goodness you made it down without incident!
Love whiteface mountain! You did everything right by downshifting on a way down. Your brakes were fine - there was no need for extra anxiety 😀. Brakes really get hot when engaged all the time. Touching the brakes every 10-15 seconds allows them to cool down and stay operational. By the way, I prefer instead of touching my brakes let the van get a bit of speed and then bake hard. All while downshifting. Another great way of navigating relatively straight mountain roads is to use cruise control. Cruise control would automatically downshift and use brakes when necessary and you can just relax and enjoy the scenery.
Amber’s van doesn’t have dynamic cruise control, so a steep decline would still result in increased speed. Active and dynamic systems are becoming more common, but for a van like hers, not an option. :) Heavy braking actually creates more heat for a given amount of time, so you have to be careful when using that method. Downshifting, light braking, and stopping periodically like Amber did is the way to go, unless you know you have dynamic CC or hill descent mode.
I’m from just outside of Gettysburg PA- but I love upstate NY. Have you been through the finger lake region? Beautiful! If you go there make sure you visit a little town called Palmyra near Canadaguia area. Lots of early Mormon History there. Gettysburg is so lovely in the fall- come visit us.

I'm dancing mentally bc I recieved my really cool story chasing mug today 😎😊🙂
Sasha Ann 😊 awww...that's so cool!!! Send me a pic or tag me on IG.
@@storychasing , I don't use Instagram, I took a picture, just trying to figure out how to send it. Will tagging you on Facebook work?
Update... I just posted what I think is my 3rd Instagram post since signing up years ago, hopefully I did it correctly
Hot brakes is a distinctive smell! They may not have destroyed them, but if you smell them it too close for my comfort- my daughter heated my brakes just to the point of smelling them on one of the hills right next to our house once. I've had to drive despite stuck brakes once too!
My Translucent Reflections 😊 ugh....thankfully mine were not smelling!
Take the gondola to the top of little whiteface. Also awesome
Lily and my little Ichabod would make a perfect pair lol
He's a Jack Russell/Chihuahua mix and does that face but if someone keeps taunting he will follow through
Janet the HipGyp 😊 oh wow...I think Lily would too.
I love “mean girl” Lily!
Crazy descent. Glad you made it safely! I’m inspired by your videos! Thinking of doing the same or moving to Mexico! Can I ask who did your van build out? I’m sure it’s in one of your videos, or drop a link to it?
Lynn N 😊 It's made by Hymer, but they are no longer in North America. The closest thing to it now is a Winnebago Solis.
PnPrailroad 😊 Oh what a beautiful sight that must have been so early in the morning too.
I just went today in a van and i never been so scared
You always have the best videos. Lily is off the charts cutie pie💕❤️♥️
😊 thank you...I kinda like her myself. lol
That would scare me even though I've been up to Yellowstone Nation Park . It was beutiful be safe out their .
Connie Osburn Thank you very much! 😊🙏
Moved my son to Seattle and while driving through Montana his brakes started smoking. We were pulling a trailer. Scary for sure!!
cheap shot 😊 Yikes that's scary. Did the brakes cool enough to keep driving?
👍🏻❤️🐾 Lily cracked me up snarling over her treats 🐶
😁 She's a silly girl.
Gorgeous scenery
Dona Lee 😊 i agree! Love the beauty of upstate NY.
Lilly’s little snarl. 🤣
Barbara Wheel LOL ....
Im not Click and Clack but I learned using low gear is what you need to do in situations like you experienced
Use Lower Gears to Go Downhill
When you start to head back downhill, use your engine and transmission to slow the car down instead of the brakes. Shift to a lower gear before you start heading downhill, as this will help slow down the car without you having to ride the brakes, says the National Park Service.
My Gypsy Adventure 😊 Yup I was in 2nd gear the whole way down and still had to tap the brakes constantly.
Heavy braking actually creates more heat for a given amount of time, so you have to be careful when using that method.
Tami Cox Thank you very much! 😊🙏
That is a scary pass. May your brakes always hold true.
Therese Dignard Thank you very much! 😊🙏
Just did this today!
Pretty drive. 😎
Another great video!
It’s A Good Life With Dora & Ed Thank you very much! 😊🙏
@@storychasing absolutely. Trying to learn from your vlogging style. Dora
Beautiful views wow we used to go to Lake Placid in the summer sometimes and The funny thing was my father's name is Placid so we'd be in a restaurant or shop and my mom would call my dad and people would just look like why is she calling him Placid in Italian there is O at the end Placido 🌻✌💖💪👨🍳🎅🚌👍

Ice cream,a burger ,and french fries 🍟🍔 🍦🍨are proven medicinal when dealing with stress😘👑💝🌻🕊omy gosh I'm so scared of Ms.Lilys ferocious growly face..I bet she could kiss me to exhaustion 🤣.She is so adorable 💝
Catherine B LOL .... Definitely worth it with that stress...I had a hard time enjoying the scenery because of the descent. I was so dang nervous!!! Oh Lily...she's a character.
Beautiful scenery. You did great driving down the mountains. Yup I would be the same way. Lilly is so cute saying I love you. She doesn't want some man jackin with moma. Hands away from my moma bud. Stay safe.
If you have arthritis...you should always exercise your knee or it will eventually get stiffer...that's what my grandfather used to tell me...I had knee surgery in 1998 and it bothers me yet...but I keep going and stairs is my way. Just a note.
What an adventure!
Tara C 😊 yeah a stressful one, but we made it.
