It’s interesting to me how many people come to existentialism in their teen years - I’m no different. My first exposure was probably Hemingway although I would say that I came to in via his story “Soldier’s Home” (setting me up for The Stranger years later), and then probably Hermann Hesse next with Demian, and then landed squarely on Kafka, which blew my mind at that age (and still). I didn’t get into the French stuff until college, but by then it firmly had its hooks in me. Thank you for the fantastic video. There are so many branches that I still need to explore.

Oohh Ive enjoyed buber and I never really thought of him as an existentialist before. I thought he is someone like Levinas that grapples with contemporary existential question but eventually resolves them in a rather Non-existenrialist-perhaps classical-theistic framework.
About Shestov, do you think he was a Christian or a Jewish Theist (IK he was a Jew but there is something in his writing that suggests he actually believed in a Christian God/Christian Conception of God)... Or maybe neither?

Buber is solidly in that loose existentialist movement.
I think Shestov believed in God, but would laugh at abstractions like a "Christian God/Christian Conception of God"

No idea what that would mean. Maybe just use words to communicate what you intend to

@@GregoryBSadler haha! i don't have anything to say particularly; just offering an arbitrary comment purely for the sake of signal-boosting you in the youtube algorithm. but while i have your attention, dr. sadler, it would be my pleasure to tell you that you've enriched my inner life deeply with your channel and introduced me to countless wonderful thinkers like hegel, martin buber, phillip k. dick and ursula k. le guin. thank you so much for your work. i know i don't really know you, but to the extent that i might be said to, you have my absolute goodwill. thank you

Can’t do existentialism right without that guy
