That is a wonderfully practical way to start peyote and can be used over and over again. Your mother appears to be the most patient of beaders, judging by what I've seen of her work.

So glad that I found this video. It was so well done and so helpful to get peyote started. I have now used it for both even count and odd count peyote. Not sure why I was a little confused on the odd count, but I finally got it and it works like a charm. Thank you Jill for your excellent directions and wonderful video.

This is a 3-in-1 video for me!! 1. I now have a great peyote-starter (my most dreaded stitch ever to start), 2. I learned the Brick Stitch, 3. I found a nice use for those not-so-uniform cheap beads! Mine is not so pretty, but I got rid of some of those "bargain" beads and just made sure to only use the same size/shape on the end that matters. Thank you SO much for this video, Jill!!! Being able to do peyote will open a whole new door in bead weaving for me!

I really have never had any issues with starting peyote, so I almost didn't watch this. I'm glad I did. I don't often do a real long peyote start, but I can see where this would be good for that. So easy to get lost stringing row 1 & 2. Also, I just did a tubular peyote piece was really wide and I know even though the beads are right, I twisted the thread a couple times when adding row 3. Not exactly sure how to adapt this for the piece I'm thinking of, but I'm going to give it a try. I think it could be done. Love your videos!

Finally, the answer! I've bought those Quick Start Peyote cards but they are too small for my beads and don't work. I've been fumbling for days giving up on first five rows that look horrible, and keep restarting many times. I can see why you use the brick stitch, to create the ups and downs. Going to do this tonight, there's hope, thank you.

I just have to tell you that I loved the video making the peyote starter strip. I used the same 10/0 Delica‘s that you did and it works perfect for the 11/0 beads but I was curious if you could tell me what size beads I would use to make a starter strip for 15/0 delicas? I tried using the same strip and it just didn’t work for me. Any advice you could give would be great. I want to start doing tapestries of birds for a friend of mine and I’m definitely going to need a starter strip. Thank you very much

I was wondering the same thing; this is an amazing way to begin peyote projects but when Jill mentioned using 10/0 delicas to create the starter strip I figured that would be for using only 10/0 Delica beads but you’ve cleared that up. Thank you

Nearly all my work is in peyote, either beaded bezels or tapestry so this will be really useful. I resisted doing this method for years. Made a starter strip last night. I like it except what I thought would happen did, splitting threads causing the anchor thread to be caught and the struggle to yank it in order to cut it out. Yes, I am using Nymo because I have tons of it and do not want to buy anything new until I have used what I already own. Thanks for the tutorial, much appreciated.

    • @asimeral

Terry, I quit using Nymo precisely because of the splitting threads. I now use Fireline. It's worth it to end the agony and frustration of that splitting thread!

i hope you read this Dear jill. i so enjoy you. thank you for giving me hope to bead again. i find beading and watching you gives me freedom from anxiety. i used to be a great beader long ago..1985 began in bead loom weaving all with seed beads...in 1986. i did long earrings w bugel beads as a baseline brick stitched a triangle top then long fringed the bottom. i called them shoulder dusters.i sold them for $4 . i live in very rural Vt. No bead stores but a c moore an hr away but there are no cylinder beads as i see in your beautiful sample anywhere. i have about a dozen small bags of 2 ÷ mm bugel beads for they were the base of the earrings i made . i am left w about a tsp of each. what can i do with such a stash? you see i gave almost everything away when i had eye operations in 1999, and 2000. My eyes do not work together and i have neuro issues causing double vision and pain. Many times I watch your videos over and over to get inspired! 2015 i began making gift bracelets w 4 mm bicones sparkly crystals and with size 6 o beads b c i could easily see them. i am much more comfortable in doing beading by feel but everything is so new. The techniques and the beads. I have not well made 11 o beads too as my sister gave me her older seed beads and they are not the best. You see i believe that creativity helps stop pain.Pain creates anxiety. i have been in horrible trigeminal neuralgia pain for almost 32 years so I am financially challenged. is it possible to do peyote stitch w not perfect beads?? ideas? is there something i could make w assorted bugel beads AND imperfect 11 o s..Jill, you see, Though i am challenged , i have enthusiasm and i do not give up easy. I use small ott light to help me see. i loved your tricks about how to get the needle threaded ..b c it works. i wish i could sit you down with a cup of cocoa and truffles from our town and share my story with you . you help me so much. Many nights i am up all night from pain. But your generous teachings so encourage me, relax me and excite me with the hope that i can move forward. . i do not know any beader but you. thank you for being kind to the beading world. blessings, Grace in Jericho

I've started making these in various sized beads. What a handy tool!!! I'm trying to figure out how to make a starter strip for two and three drop peyote. Is it possible to do a variation of brick stitch? Or would I need to grin and bear it and make the strips in the peyote stitch I want them for? I really have a tough time getting any peyote started so am thrilled by this idea. Can you do a video about two and three drop starter strips please Jill?
