Pro tip: If you're on a hill in snow don't stop or you'll risk sliding backwards.
+eddy4905 I forgot to mention momentum! Good call
If you have FWD you need to add a spoiler in the front so the front wheels get more grip!
eddy4905 Truth, my girlfriend was trying to get up a hill and started sliding back then the car turned towards the ditch
happened to me dam those lights
Especially if you have a manual, and you aren't great at the clutch engagement yet.
Tip for rain and snow. Sometimes if you turn the wheel straight again you can regain the traction and friction from your tires and re apply the turning and that could help in some minor incidents!
+Brandon Hackey great point!
It works, I've done that!!!
To drive in snow FWD/RWD or AWD just Drive like a grandma and all will be well
I drive like a grandma and everyone tail gates me so it does not work if others around you are driving fast.
Maria Oman fuck em if they wreck you that’s their fault
Ignore them. Let em’ pass if they want to be idiots.
I just think they are wasting more gas than me
@@alexrojas7450 great way to think about it
Tip #1 - Winter/Snow tires
Tip #2 - Don’t drive like a jackass
Have a great day
Do tires really make a noticeable difference? I moved to mountain Colorado town from desert in Texas, I have no clue about driving in snow
I do not live anywhere near the USA, but I do have snow conditions every once in a while .. and yes, tires do make a difference. You'd be surprised how your car does NOT want to stick to the road on summer tires in winter...
I think i have enough money after bills to buy 2 snow tires for my car, its fwd i guess I'll get them on the front?
@@tarzaan2603 check craigslist for some. I bought a 4 used tires for $150 the guys said he used them for 2 months only and sold the car he had them for. Bought a spare pair of rims for $100 from a guy parting the same car as mine and paid $60 to get the tires mounted. Studded snow tires for around $300
andrew kb nice, thats what I like to hear!
“Driving in the snow is almost the same as driving in the dry” famous last words.
Tips for driving in Snow: Put your defrosters/heat on so you can see where you're going lol.
Tips for driving fwd in the snow. Don't drive like mustangs do in the dry
🤣
No drifting then?
Or Challengers
Hell yeah! 🤘
Nice summary, but I'd add: don't be afraid to use the Window Defroster, and in deep snow, upshift early to reduce torque spin on tires
If you are sliding mid-turn in FWD, you actually want to steer where you want to go and apply gas. The front wheels will "pull" the car in the direction you want to go.
I floor my Civic and let traction control work at the same time to get moving or stay moving to get up hills. Works, never gotten stuck (knock on wood). I also coast when ever I turn if its slick, if you gas or brake it could make you loose traction and slide. ABS is also a godsend.
I pulled the traction control fuse out because with my car it takes away the power and I can't get speed for a hill
@@charlieknight9988 my golf 5 has a turn off button thank god, always turning it uphill then turns back on automatically.. always gets stuck with it on.
In understeer you Should Not just off the throttle. Always cluch down, off the throttle (100%) so wheels can spin freely. In modern cars you should not risk with handbrake, ESP will lock rearwheels just in time. All other stuff was quite right.
Comment from Estonia, snow and ice: november til middle of march :))
How to learn to drive in snow: go to an empty parking lot after it has snowed the pull and release the e-brakes and practice pulling yourself outta that slide
Underrated tip
Yeah then sneaky cops show up and you loose your license for 1 year
In Canada, you get ticketed for stunting. Even if it is an accident

Just bought my 09 GTI 2 weeks ago, had the first big snow here in Ohio and it handles pretty good in snow. Heated plaid seats are nice too :)
AAAAAYYYY what part of ohio i'm here in Hamilton.
my tip: Recognize what type of differential you have. With most cars, you're sporting an open differential, which means if one tire has the least little bit of friction and the other tire has absolutely none, you ain't going nowhere. If you want to make sure you have the best traction possible, make sure both tires are getting the same amount of traction throughout the system.
TIPS FOR DRIVING FWD IN THE SNOW ..... PRAY
E SEAGULL That’s funny. I’ve been driving FWD cars for about 20 years in snow. No problems.
Yeah if you have a car that’s not a Subaru in fwd you’re fine. Get good tires, start in 2nd, don’t floor it.
Rwd trucks are the worst in snow right?
Not really .a fwd vehicle is predictable in snow than a rwd.
That's because the traction is on the front where all the weight is.
You'll get unstuck quicker with a fwd rather than an rwd.
Thats what I was doing coming from Ottawa to Toronto in a snow storm.
Pulsing was the word you were looking for when describing abs lol
I've driven rear wheel for the past 10 years just got a front wheel and I'm still getting used to it! Great video 👍
Left foot on the brake. My best friend during winter ❄️❄️😍
Matuš Buksár 😂😂😂😂
Can I dab to regain control? 😎
+DoctaM3 😂😂😂😂 yes, def works. Both hands off the wheel
oh god
I'm visualizing somebody hitting a patch of black ice in a turn and just flailing there hands off the wheel in a desperation-dab
@@ethanbenton6676 best reply i’ve seen all month on this app 😂
I’m surprised you didn’t mention changing gears in fwd
Thank you for your advice. Nervous driver in Midwest right now. This makes me feel a bit better. The "Go out and spread some positivity!" at the end was a nice ending to video.
Pro tip keep on the heater so you can actually see out your windows...
Scotty K told me it's more so the dry air of the AC that clears stuff up. But nobody wants cold so sure youre right.
@@thomassteele1728 yep. Turning on the AC compressor while the heater is going dehumidifies the air, preventing your interior glass from fogging up
Best tip to drive in the snow...DON'T TEXT AND DRIVE and talking on the cellphone...what is so important that you need to be on call while driving in a snow storm...remember the 80's ..we didn't have cellphone...
in a fwd wouldnt you want to take the rally approach and point where you want to go then floor it to pull you through the turn.
That's only if you start sliding, but absolutely
Surprised you didn't mention that sometimes when sliding sideways that throttle input in FWD can help pull the car out of the slide (as opposed to the brakes in that situation that may send you into a spin). Love the videos and GTI otherwise, I agree with everyone, unless you're getting an Audi or something, keep it! Haha
N Wolfe true true. I was thinking in regular driving situations but I supposed that could happen! I've definitely done that while sliding around in a parking lot lol
Finally someone who gets how hard it is to clear an SUV roof with cross bars
when you said antilock breaks I felt a pulsating sensation in my right foot
Bruh, when it's - 35 I ain't clearing snow off my car lol
I'm moving up towards NH and I've never driven in snow before. Thanks for the video.
That cracked me up so frigging much with your pronouncing it anti lock, but we can leave a comment below if that bothers anyone. The funniest thing I've heard anyone say in weeks
Excellent tips Eli! Some great reminders for myself too!
Tonester 8three 😊👊🏻
Let a load of air out of your front tires...seriously it works.!!!
not all e brakes are for rear brakes
I gotta say, driving a RWD truck sounds a lot more fun than a FWD car in the snow. Good thing I have a RWD truck to slide around in, I found this video because I'm looking into buying a FWD car.
I used to drive a Magnum in the snow on summer 20 inch tires. Took forever to get anywhere. Never again. LOL
@@13jrvernon I drive an 05 Ram 1500 and it's super easy to slide out the rear end, which is fun for sliding around, but not fun on the highway unless I'm in 4wd. No ABS is fun too ;)
FWD Ford Focus Hatchback, how to use traction to drive up steep hill without getting stopped or stuck
It would also be a good idea to keep some snow chains in the car and know how to put them on.
True that! Though snow chains are illegal in some states
Studded tires are the best for fwd
Left foot breaking and gas. its the best way to regain control if your rear tires loose traction.
Here in sweden you have to have winter tyres, its the law! should be the law in US to imo.
Best mod except snow tires it's a Limited Slip Diff.
It's like a quattro FWD.
The cost to install is relatively small and well worth it in snow, ice ,rain;braking steering better handlig overall.
Ehh I drive a Saab 95 an lsd is 4,000 usd
Snow tires are expensive considering I don’t live in a place that snows all winter long. I got snow chains
Snow tires, working abs, and drive slow
Last winter I drove my fwd lancer in the snow but my abs no longer works and i had Pirelli tires on Only time i got stuck was in my driveway
Oh I wish I was in Mass or CT right now that snow looks like so much fun from the pics my family and friends that live up there have sent me 😞 so jelly I miss winter weather.
Shawn Prickett haha it was a mess today!
I honestly really enjoy these videos
+TheAsfv thank you!
I was fully expecting this ‘young punk’ to have nothing of value to say given his lack of years of driving. And living for that matter. Prejudice be damned once again! There’s a tonne of great advice here for all drivers to learn from or simply to refresh the storage files. Well done sir!
You ever think that maybe that young driver studied driving not that long ago. And anything he learned in drivers Ed and defensive driving courses are still fresh in his mind. Sometimes a new driver is better then an old driver just because they understand the rules better as they were just tested on it and had to spend month studying something the old driver hasn't studied in decades. Now that not always true ofcourse, some people don't take those courses. But everyone should. I did and I dont regret it. I know the rules of the road better then allot and have learned allot of tips to help during winter driving or during a mechanical failure. They thought us everything from how to get out of a slide to how to stop of ur car if your gas pedal sticks or your brakes fail or power goes out and there's no power steering or brakes. In my opinion everyone should have to take those courses to get a licence.
Another snow tip, do not drive behind an old lady driving up hill, they usually go very slow and you will get stock behind them
Raghib Biro good tip!!
I can’t afford snow tires for a round trip to a snowy area for a business trip. It’s a one time thing. That being said, I have chains and kitty litter and those mats you stick under tires.
What's more with the snow on the roof, if the snow ices-up, it can fly off and smash windshields. Don't be lazy and clean off that snow.
I just learnt driving and i got scared thinking about driving in snow with fwd.😢
I’ve been driving my car without abs and traction control thanks to a bad sensor it’s been so cold just haven’t gotten around to fixing it but it’s been rough stopping at lights lately and turning onto snowy roads but I have brand new wheels from the dealership some nice all seasons so any sliding is easily corrected. Even hit some black ice in the highway and the tires were like nah buddy we got you GRIPPPP.
Moving from Cali to Washington with a Corolla gonna be scary till I get a job to get a RAV4
Dude, I have a small RAV4, and even that was too high for my 5' 7" to clear the roof off. But plan on getting a VW mk7 Golf. Want to get winter tires for it as well, but I plan on getting extra rims to keep the winter tires on. That way it's a simple to swap wheels. Suggestions on brand of tires and rims?
For my RAV4 I totally love Cooper tires for it.
TOP TIP!! ALWAYS ALWAYS KEEP TWO HANDS ON THE WHEEL !!
have you heard of a manual transmission?
@@Prodslade 🤣a shift stick / gear stick is to change gear not for grabbing onto when in a state of panic🤣
You do have esp and that helps in corners and everywhere else by decreasing throttle for example to increase friction
You're exactly right . . . . . . . . good info, Thanks !
I don’t have abs or a handbrake what do I do
First time for me driving in the snow i didn't wipe the snow off the roof, when i had to brake a little harder all that snow got on my windshield and i had to pull over because i couldn't see anything.
My car is from 88 and doesn't have Traction Control or ABS. Or even airbags.
It doesn't want to get traction and almost any braking applied will try to lock the brakes
Yeah it's really fun to commute in the winter (intense sarcasm)
Thanks for the upload! Definitely helpful!
Honestly just drive with caution. If you were to loose grip there is close to nothing that you can really do. Let off the gas, stay calm and just hope that you'll regain grip.
As long as you drive smoothly and at a lower speed than normal through corners, you should be fine.
And ALWAYS drive with the correct tyres. Snow tyres, maybe even studded tyres if you live somewhere where it is moist and freezing during night-time.
I just call it ABS 😊
Cleaning the snow off the car roof. Im pretty sure thats a law.
Man great tips, though I can't use any of the brake ones :( I have an old Saab, parking brake to the front wheels and no ABS... guess I'll be driving like grandma then!
Lil late but I have a 1997 900s love that thing starting the restore soon it was my first car in high school gonna keep that beauty. It’s nice to see other saab owners still out there
All vehicles should be awd
What about all the drift kings out there?
Just like buying the best snow tires you can afford, buying the best snow and ice clearing equipment you can afford and taking the time to do it will save a lot of grief .
Regarding snow on top of the car. The follower should be considerate and not tailgate in winter conditions
Would it help to have more than a 6” section in your passenger window to see?
***Cries on Electronic E brake****
Yeah. That won't work. instant ABS on all four wheels on most of them. No rear wheel lock-up.
Yeah that's really important. Your speed should be where you can slowly react, because any over reaction (IE over stearing) will just make things worse.
Can snow tires be used on normal road ? Thanks?
It's best to get all season tires if you want to use them in all conditions
I have snow tires and traction control and my car slides like crazy and I was driving 5 mph. What's up with that.
Also live in Boston, looking forward to a mk7 gti. Just curious what's the name of the song in the beginning, please
It's better to slightly accelerate than break in a turn.
my car doesn’t have anti lock brakes what do??
I think "pulsing" is the word you're looking for lol 😆
Lets all dab in turns on the snow and all learn to power-slide into turns
Use the e brake to drift check
I'm trying to switch over from a pickup truck, to something more economic on fuel. A lot of the subarus are out of my prove range that I'm considering. Almost all other cars are FWD or RWD. I live on a hill, and I have snow drifts a lot. Are these things I really need to worry about? I just don't want to get stuck. And there's not too many AWDs in coupes or sedans besides subarus.
Fwd with traction control ?
Pretty common thing nowadays.
Not cleaning snow off your roof is illegal in most places.
If you drive.about 15 x in snow chains or snow tires?
Just got in a crash in the snow 😞
How will I do with snow tires on my 2015 chevy impala
We learned with 2 wd on ice

IgnitionTube The ice doesn't help either
You don’t have anti lock breaks that’s your motor slowing u down
Thanks for the tips Eli! My speed3 had a shit ton of trouble today in the snow even with all season tires. I could barely get out of my driveway
+Krzysztof Kunka need winter tires! They make a world of difference over all seasons. I went from new all seasons to used winters and the winters are wayyyyyy better
Ladies and Gentlemen. Do not yank your handbreaks . Its ridic!
Stylo Breeze it's fun as frick
Here's my question about front wheel drive:
If I'm going up a icy road in my front wheel drive car, and there's a dry strip up the middle of the road big enough for just one tire, which tire do I want on that dry strip, left or right?
Thanks! Great video!
There is no difference. What will probably happen if one driven tire gets more traction that the other is your tire that is on ice/snow will start to spin because of open differential. But when your tires loose grip and start to spin ESP or some kind of traction control shoudl kick in to prevent them from prining too much. just try to feel the car and feel when tires start to spin, you can try countering it by easing of the gas slightly to give your tires some grip.
Handbrake: Don’t do it lol I OD on using it my ass spun around but drifting on snow is hella fun
You lost me at accelerate with fwd in snow...haha. Better be in reverse then. Never reversed up so many hills as after I got a fwd car.
3:19 not of you have an electric e-brake.
What about traction control? Like is it good in snow?
Traction control is always on. Never turn it off unless your stuck temporally.
If you're lucky to have AWD or 4WD ... then it off
Do you recommend all 4 tires be snow tires? Thanks for the video.
Yes
How much snow did you guys get today? We got around 10" on the Maine Coast
