Fantastic to see the Dunsany Estate engaged in rewilding - as a visitor there in 1974 it was such a groomed landscape it would be great to make a return visit to a wilder Dunsany !

Lord Dunsany (the writer a few generations back) was one of the greatest prose writers in English history. He wrote fantasy stories in language that was breathtaking for its beauty. HP Lovecraft sat at his feet at a public reading and was in awe. Much of Lovecraft's writing was just a fanboy's imitation of Dunsany.

Sublime, wish more landowners would follow suit. Incidentally we didn’t one of Lord Dunsany’s ancestors write “Beyond the fields we Know “/orThe King of Elfland’s Daughter “?

I'm heading to Dunsany Castle/Dunsany Nature Reserve on the 12th August. This will be a rather momentous occasion as I'm currently writing an MRes thesis on Lord Dunsany's (and Tolkien's) fiction entitled 'Wonder's Native Haunt: Earth-centred Sacrality in the Fantasies of Lord Dunsany and J.R.R. Tolkien'. I also happen to have a background in wildlife ecology and countryside management. Suffice it to say, the estate merges all of my interests. Very much looking forward to the tours. Great video.

I was learning a bit about permaculture a few years ago and found an English farmer who inherited her far land from her father. She turned from monoculture grass for grazing to more diverse strains of grass, which meant she could graze all year

A superb landscape of 750 acres. Not small by any standard. I did not see any herbivores though. Are there plans to introduce beavers on this property?

Beavers are not native to ireland,i mean it can be done but the purpose of rewilding is to restore a habitat to what it was not introduce completely new species.

Just beware of unknowns, tantalizing you with beautiful wild eyes glowing, a little photography, ehh, just heat does stir up those yellowjackets around 90 plus Fahrenheit they can get a little edgy! Yet the Cercropia moth and a Lady Fair made my summer just this year!

Pollinators are those localized factors that pollinate, help to germinate, transfer by gut then defecation, that being seeds, pits, that may then sprout or at least supplemented by manures of brush bunnies(?) or other rodent style life forms that burrow in the soil, tilling it in their own way as they make it more productive through their attentive lifestyles, unique qualities, and functions of this ecosystem.

Perennial grasslands composed of various Species present that seem tall and flowering, a mix or more simplified version to sequester their sunlight of the summer's days. Vegetative Cover comprises this layer and could be determined to Species or mix of Species. Dense mat of herbaceous cover which stabilize these soils using sunlight for primary production with long grasses flowing in the wind on a late in the summer haze of high temps.

So this appears to be more of a passive rewilding, i wonder what they have done about reintroducing species and if they have considered the beaver

"I'm not one of these types of people who likes to complain, I like to do things about it."
Yeah, well, most of us didn't just happen to inherit a giant estate mate. Quite easy to do something when you have that much land thrown into your lap.

    • @gallowglass2630
      @gallowglass2630 Год назад +2

How do you know he inherited it ,most anglo irish lords don't speak with american accents.Even if he did it would be a fraction of what the family once owned and in a republic which is quite hostile to nobility and landlords due to the history quite rightly ,however thats not his fault and the estate is probably more of a headache than anything.

It’s too bad you have chosen to be negative. He has it and is doing something good with it. Simple of that. Even an apartment dweller can plant a few pots of native plants or volunteer at a local garden.

What I don't understand as a farmer is, how can you feed the world with this approach? Britian for example is only 48% self-sufficient in food production, yet there is a big push to take more land out of food production. Crazy, in my view.
Have you measured the food produced on this 750 acres of prime agricultural land?

    • @jaeldavison9916

As far as I'm aware, the 750 acres isn't the complete estate. There are a couple of hundred acres that are farmed
