The antiquity of the occupation of the Mutzig region is attested by the numerous clues found during archaeological excavations.
Discovery of Paleolithic remains during the construction of the Mutzig-Saales railway between Mutzig and Gresswiller, and recently an important Middle Paleolithic site (-90,000 BC) at the foot of the Felsbourg cliffs at the western exit of Mutzig.
Another clue: a Roman pottery workshop in Heiligenberg-Dinsheim, a workshop linked to the Roman road Argentoratum (Strasbourg) - Donon which crossed the Bruche probably at the height of Mutzig and the discovery of an important Merovingian cemetery to the north west of the city at a place called “Leimpel”.
We had to wait until the 10th century to find the first mention of the name of the town: bishops Richevin and Ruthardt gave the Saint Thomas church vineyards located “in Muzzeca”. In 1263, we discovered “Muzziche” and in 1286 “Mutziche”. The city was the subject of a long struggle between the Emperor and the Bishop of Strasbourg, a struggle which only ended in 1308 with the victory of the latter. From that moment on, the city remained under its sovereignty until the Revolution. She was engaged to different noble families, the most illustrious of which is that of the Landsberg-Mutzig.
