The thing is, artists always play nice. Artists could play dirty if they just photoshop existing work and noone be the wiser - but the AI bros never realized it.
Artists are irreplaceable because to improve the AI, it needs to be fed better data to begin with. But AI bros would never stop lying to keep the theft legal.

@TheDemiGodDusk Definitely not a new thing, but there was a period where you didn't need to have a deep understanding of marketing, particularly because the algorithms were a lot simpler, less competition, and communities for which artists drew for were more tight knit so it was easier to get known via word of mouth.
Marketing at it's core is telling people about a product or service. But being able to do so requires a lot of knowledge and tinkering of the platforms to know how to do so. You have to understand the algoritms to play them to your advantage for each plaatform you post to. You have to get reaquainted with the algorithms everytime they change (cough cough Instagram). Posting at a time where people are most likely to view your work is a must for growth which can be less straightforward than it sounds. The milage may vary, but it's definitely a lot more complocated than it used to be.

@Mediados many successful artists have already made some great art using the art that AI produces as inspiration( whether it be for background, color scheme, poses, or theme). And people has been taking inspiration from machines since their inception for many works of art or other creative fields. And there's rel no difference between biology life and machines/digital. All living things are machines made of organic materials with the brain just being an incredibly advanced computer.
As for emotions argument, sure, currently AI can't have emotions, do them not reaching the tipping point to either develop them by themselves or for humanity to discover how to grant them emotions. After all, the first life didn't have emotions(at least not the ones humans and other current day animals have shown) being more logical or less intellectual complex. Heck, many insects of current down haven't shown signs of emotions and can create inspiring, beautiful things.
Inspiration is very much subjective, with a plain yellow square on a canvas being inspirational to someone. Which is why modern and abstract art came to be. Heck, a lot of images from distance planets images are computer created based on raw data it received. Which you can say that what a camera on a similar scale. You can say that photography isn't like that and has emotions and intent, but that technically wrong. The person using the camera has the intent and emotions but not the tool(camera) itself. Which is the same for AI art. The AI is just a tool that the user uses to make their intentions and emotions known through the art, much like with photography and Photoshop.
There's also artist that are unable to feel emotions that can create incredible art. So emotions aren't need for any form of creativity. That's just the brain/ego saying it is, like the selfish thing it is.

I feel like AI is going to suffer a catastrophic backfire effect. That is, it will massively boost the value of things that are known to be actually man-made, not machine-made. Art's value is derived from abstractions. And not just monetary value, but social value. Cultural value. AI art is currently looked down upon by most people, and for good reason: It's soulless. People do not experience art nihilistically for the fact that it exists, but rather to understand its intention. AI cannot intend things, therefore its art holds no value. It is worthless junk. Everyone subconsciously understands this, as it is apparent purely through the result. Therefore, I believe human art will become more valuable due to how the market is currently oversaturated with garbage. This may also lower the bar for entry and make people appreciate less technically skilled artists because their art will hold more character and be more obviously genuine than anything AI can make.
In that way, the intention of AI "artists" (that AI will replace human artists) will backfire and instead negate itself. The only type of art I worry about is the utilitarian variety, especially NSFW. Which is a problem given that utilitarian art is by far the most profitable, and we have no transitioned to communism yet, so people still need to work for a living.

If it was for the greater good of society they would've compensated artists from the very beginning, but because they care more about money than they respect our work, they are doing the absolute most to disguise their blatant copyright infringement as anything but that, even going as far as to argue that AI is so smart that it doesn't objectively copy, as if there wasn't a list of thousands of artists that Midjourney had collected with the objective to train their AI, with what prompts to use in order for the program to accurately copy their likeness, none of which were contacted, none of which have consented, some of which are dead.

I will be honest, as someone who is from North West England and who also studied animation too, (with illustration) I predicted your issue with employment as a 2D animator at the start of the video. You're very right. Most animation jobs in the UK have a focus on stop motion, and if not that, it's now CGI. So unless you know Blender (which most uni courses don't teach), you're out of luck. I mean jesus, I went to uni in 2013 and they taught us animation in Adobe Flash. Adobe discontinued that software in 2016, the YEAR I graduated ffs...unless the courses modernise/diversify, I'm afraid it will become just another one of those 'Mickey Mouse degrees' because even though the skills are legit, the demand is so low...so it's a catch 22. One of my uni tutors even worked on the BFG and Danger Mouse and it was so demoralising to know that the UK's 2D animation industry is all but non-existent now...unless you wanna eff off to LA (which is monetarily impossible for most working class people) or another leading expensive city and do an apprenticeship for peanuts, to train to animate in the UK is just pissing money away. It's why I changed my focus onto storytelling and novel writing.

There are also alot of studios in the UK that still do 2D however it is cut out animation and can be expensive to train in out of a studio because they use toon boom. It's not a waste of money to train if you are open to anything other than animating 2D frame by frame.

It was visible in the NFT space and now in the "AI" (it is not AI there is no intelligence involved) space. There seems to be a lot of it in the tech industry (though that may be because of crypto and so called "AI"), in the US there seems to be a lot of it on the right. Though in some places it came from the left and it seems to be associated with authoritarianism.
I don't get the hatred, I'm not a good artist, I'm only an artist in the sense that I've made some art, but I don't have the passion for it so I'm not going to make enough art to be good at it. I still enjoy art, I enjoy looking at what other people have made. I think a lot of the hatred comes down to two things. The image of what an artist is and what art now is.
When the common person thinks about what an artist might be (in particular high art), they won't think about the small time creatives but rather Ongo Gablogian (from always sunny in Philadelphia). The pretentious, arrogant, and rude stereotype of an artist.
The second is what modern art is. A lot of these people have an issue with the seemingly lack of skill in modern art.
Combining the two crates an ugly image of arrogant snobs who think their turds are gold. Is this in any way accurate? No. But that's the image that a lot of these people have.

As someone interested in techy and nerdy stuff, I am actually open towards the idea of what marketing labels as A.I.
What I think however - after hearing your words, reading from people who for instance left deviantART because they started to scrape people's works for LLM training and also from software developers who are responsible for quality control - is that the way this technology is widely in use now for media creation isn't exactly how it benefits mankind.
Even worse, stories of fake news (yea, yea, a term people love to use now but it nails the point) and people falling for these raise.
You and all the other creative minds out there do fantastic work which has always been part of human history and identity and that hopefully never changes.
What I could think of and hope for is that _A.I._ tools get used to help you people making even better stuff.
Adobe recently showed off what their newest suite of video creation tools can do, removing entire objects from video recordings or changing what's there.
While this is something that indeed can and probably will be used at some point to threatening others, I too can see how it makes the whole concept of making movies easier.
All that said, no, artists of all kind are probably fine but as we are a society of progress and changes, you will most likely have to adopt and deal with this new stuff much more so than you would ever have to with silly things like NFTs (a technology that is actually interesting under the hood but that was also awfully wrong executed).

AI will replace artists for many tasks. Just as a test, I have used it to do a rough terrible sketch of an idea and it no time, had AI have it come to realization. No need to pay anyone. Also AI is becoming more and more human with the ability to generate ideas and come up with creative input to add to an artistic idea. With the advancements being made, any layperson will see their ideas not only come to fruition but work with AI to generate almost as a consultant. And remember, the algorithm will have the knowledge and input of every art study out there and field. That’s what you get for being a creative and having an art degree. It’s historically laughed at as a degree. If you wanna watch your college tuition go down the drain, you should know having an art degree will not merit financial benefits. If your smart, you can use AI, upload your work and have it dynamically give you input on it and alter it, maybe help you understand you work better. Give you different versions of your work. But most importantly, it will eliminate the jobs everyday businesses need when they want artistic input. AI is advancing rapidly, imagine how worthless the degree will be in a couple of years. That’s what you get for choosing your path. Your sadness brings me joy.

It's not impossible to get work, but it sure is daunting for those who has a hard time advertising themselves or keeping up with certain trends or company's working processes.
It may be best for those with a creative mindset to rely off their skills to work in a small group or on your own and making a bit of a living from it. Commission artists I've seen has been on the rise cause as you've said in the video, there *are* alternatives!
(Note: Sorry for the large paragraphs, just had to get this out there! Please keep your creativity alive if it's what you love!)

Even when I was young, and wanted to take art classes, I was always of the opinion. No amount of training in technical skill will give somebody the drive to do art. Any kind of art. A degree helps with technical skill, but so do classes at a local community centre, or online.
I know because my mother's got some art training and technical skill, but she is the least creative person I know. She can draw the same thing over and over again.
Meanwhile I'm still shaking off the bullshit my art teachers put on me and just creating for the love of it. I'm fortuante to be in a safe place where I can create.

I’m doing community college right now, and honestly it’s been a pretty great experience. If not because I’m learning skills I wouldn’t have even thought to pick up before, and it’s helped a lot with my growth as an artist and a designer. Like I’ve never been big on photography, but now I love the stuff.
I’m pretty worried my degree won’t be worth much in the end though. We’re already seeing graphic designers losing their jobs to ai trained off their previous work. The ai can’t really make new designs so easily, but it doesn’t really matter since a lot of these designs are meant to be samey. Any field that follows a template would be at threat. I guess I’m glad I’m getting so into a variety of art forms that could be potential escape routes. AI can try and replace digital art, but it can’t replace somebody’s personal family photo, right? And even if big companies are fine with making template products, I suppose there will always be indie projects to work on.

I'm an American who earned a BFA in the mid-2010s (the peak barista art graduate years when that joke was mainstream in the US). I don't think that art school is a useless pursuit, BUT it should only be the decision if you know EXACTLY how you want to use those four years.
I majored in Illustration, but I also took electives in graphic design, typography, motion graphics, InDesign, and basically all of the boring vegetables of art school. Not only did that improve my illustration, but it also made me more versatile in the job market. I'm not saying it's a proven method, but most creative positions now are looking for a jack of multiple trades because you can become master in all with enough time and practice. If I had any advice, it would be to go to art school with a real purpose and not just for the dream job. The dream job probably won't happen, and if you see popular threads on social media, most dream jobs are actually nightmares.
Build a community in college, build versatility, acquire as many basic skills as possible, and think from a problem solving perspective.
That's why stories are coming out of these AI consultants going ballistic during critiques. They don't solve problems. They promp and prompt and prompt. Art is antithetical to capitalism, and the way to work in the market is to be a problem solver. AI can create end products, but it can never solve problems.

I may not currently be someone who is studying an "art" degree more so a "design degree" but I agree with a lot of the points made within this video. Putting this video into other contexts like design and fashion (as mentioned in the video) I can relate to the "why even bother" section and "modern day" sections of this video. I have just started my bachelors degree in fashion and fashion design and sometimes i do wonder why i am even trying when fast fashion dominates such a large percent of the industry. I do sometimes think "why do i even try, i most liekly will never be successful" but then i look at fast fashion dominating the industry and remember why i want to get into the industry in the first place. My goal (being ambitious as it is) is to change peoples perceptions on slow fashion and to recreate the individuality and originality that slow fashion is about. its the same thing with AI art and how it is needed to be challenged by us human artists and to change the perception, showing people the individuality and originality of human made art.
I do sometimes belive that fast fashion challenges those who want to pursue fashion as a degree/career but we can just look at those like Teuta & Lirika Matoshi, or haute couture designers like Gou Pei who create individuality and originality and put the effort and time to create those pieces. Thats what makes slow fashion so special to me and why I really resonate with this video. I may not like fast fashion and want to change the perception of slow fashion within the industry but i also have to study the concepts of fast fashion and study fast fashion garments in order to properly understand why it is such a phenomenon in order to challenge its idea.

Hey there Fiona, I found your essay to be very insightful in terms of assessing the status quo and the importance of establishing yourself as an competing artist/animator and wanted to thank you for setting our perspectives straight.
I'm a graduate from University of Northampton who achieved a First class in BA Illustration and already feeling the Post University Angst due to AI, Unemployment and the passing of Cartoon Network studios (1992-2022).
At times I feel pretty pretentious as an artist when I'm not making money, but glad to say at least that I haven't regretted going to Uni anyway due to how much it impacted not just my skillset alone but also the reputation, friendships and even my professionalism. It also represents a milestone of my life; coming a long way to earn the degree despite everything and already started to miss it due to fond memories I had there.
For those considering to go to higher education, the advice I would even give to my first year self is:
    1. Identify your genres that you like, because they're going to help establish who you are as an artist.
    2. ARTICULATION is an essential keyword for your mindset, because it's the asset humans possess that A.I doesn't.
    3. Make the most of the resources at University, but only those you find relevant for your projects!
Anyway, hope this long-ass comment helps, and good luck!

I was astonished how few of them are even preparing, let alone ready for entering the job market: they had NO portfolios, no presentations or websites, didnt do any projects apart from those their school asked for, rarely had any commercial experience or contact with commercial studios or agencies whatsoever. So when I hear how hard the market is nowadays and how tricky it is to make a living as a commercial artist, it is true to a degree but students certainly arent doing anything on their part to up their chances to succeed.

Italian here. We see a lot of value in art as a heritage. Unfortunately modern Italy doesn't see any value in own artists, so much that "illustrator"/"animator"/"3D modeller" and such are not even recognized as official jobs and they all are considered as generic freelancers with barely any rights, no unions and no safety nets of sort. So much that all of my clients are foreigners online and even the 3D modelling course I'm doing they tell us that unless we "win the lottery", any job offer is in foreign countries.
The country literally makes tons and tons of capable artists (just look how many Italians are in games and movies credits) but the country itself still see us as "non-workers that make cartoons for kids or those pesky videogames that probably don't make that much money anyway."

I'm currently doing a degree in illustration, and while ai and stuff is somewhat disheartening, I still wouldn't change my degree for anything. I came into the degree with the mindset of wanting that extra time to practice my art, learn new things, and just get the experience of what university life is like - from the beginning I knew that I may leave this degree to just end up doing some minimum wage job with art being something delegated to my free time, and I'm fine with that! I love art, I love creating, I want to end up writing and illustrating my own books, in my perfect world I'd be able to earn my living as an illustrator - so I decided to give it my best shot: go to university, practice, learn, make connections. But I also know and accept that it may not work out. That won't stop me from trying.
Also, with your talk about community within art degrees - this is so true! There's around 100 people in my year on my illustration degree and man is it one of the best communities I've met. Our unofficial course group chats are so active (the instagram one has roughly 80-90 members) with 100s of messages being sent basically every day, there's even a few people from other courses who ended up joining & have just become an unofficial part of the illustration cohort. Talking to other friends I knew before uni who have gone on to degrees in things such as nursing, history, etc, they always talk about how their course group chats solely talk about the course - and many questions they ask on there may even be totally ignored, but my course is so different: it's a whole true community with at least 50-60% of conversations being completely random or open invites for anyone on the course to join in some gathering happening that evening. Everyone's happy to help, make friends, compliment each other's art, and I've even had people I barely know willing and offering to help me with problems I'm having when I hadn't even specifically asked for help (for example, I struggle with cooking food and sometimes just eating anything for meals bcz I constantly feel too tired & overwhelmed to cook - I've cooked a proper meal twice this entire education year - and one time I offhandedly mentioned it in reply to a conversation about all the crappy meals people had been having while at uni. I then immediately got someone offering to help me sort out meal prep stuff so that it wouldn't feel so overwhelming in the future).
Sorry, that's long lol. Tldr: Doing a degree in illustration is probably one of the best things that's happened to me even if I know it's a hard industry to get into. I never started the degree in the first place with the expectation that it would mean I could make a living off art. The time to focus on art & the amazing community I've met have been well worth it.

Sorry but unless you have the privilege of having rich parents who paid your college tuition, getting an expensive degree with no expectation that you can make a living in the field is sheer insanity. For the vast majority of people an “amazing community” is not worth getting into tens if not hundreds of thousands of dollars into debt for.
If that’s a trade-off you’re fine with, or if you’re one of those privileged enough to not have to worry about supporting yourself financially, then more power to you. But it’s a path that most people can’t even begin to entertain.

    • @GwynnDdu
      @GwynnDdu 28 дней назад

@@sssspider its just a trade off I'm fine living with. My parents are doing alright, but they don't have any spare money to help support me.
In the UK where I'm from it's the norm to take out a loan for your tuition fee & you only have to start paying it back once you're earning a certain yearly amount. I'm managing to survive on roughly £8000 a year while in uni (this is without having a job along with my studies, just maintenance loan & savings), which is less than half of what I'd need to earn yearly to have to pay off my tuition & maintenance loans. Maybe it's not the best idea to just go with the flow so much, but I'm 90% sure I would've dropped out by now if I'd done a maths degree (which was my initial plan) or anything else I didn't enjoy as much. I also got into a uni with a really good reputation, which is known for how well it introduces students into the actual industry, so there's at least some chance I manage to get an arts job right out of uni.

As much as people like to clown on art degrees I don’t think they’re anywhere close to being the worst offender. The sheer number of people walking around with useless MBA’s and psych degrees and 5 figure debts is a way bigger issue. In reality it probably would be better off for me financially to have just gone straight into work, but I still can't find it in myself to regret doing an art degree. It's really fun, I've met great people, it's allowed me to get used to living alone & having to deal with my own finances with what feels like more of a safety net, in future years I'll have opportunities to go to multiple big events in the illustration industry that otherwise I probably never would've been able to... Your portfolio speaks louder then anything else, as well has making connections with other artists. Make friends, talk to people and actually be qualified for the job youre applying. School isnt as necessary as some might think, at least in this field. The biggest reason people dont break into the industry is because they arent proactive enough, dont get to know people or straight up dont make work that can keep up with the demands. I hate to break it to you but just being ok isnt gonna cut it - you need to draw professionally or your not gonna get a job ^^

Everyone working in the knowledge/creative sector needs to give it a serious thought. Corporations are obviously seeking to exploit and squeeze dry any form of advantage they can get, even if that's at the expense of the worker. Freelancing and creating a personal brand on the side should be pretty high on your priority list.

Is an art degree needed to be an artist? no. Is it a guarantee that it will give you a job? also no. Is it important? yes as higher education shouldn't be "get the degree that will give you the best job" but instead to enrich the lives of yourself and others while learning about habits that will help you interact with the field you want to specialise in. STEM is also important but we don't put it under the same scrutiny when a new theory is discovered that invalidates the facts of the past like we do for the humanities. Hard science without the humanities is how we get people like Elon Musk and we don't need more people like him

my (fine)art ed was already hindered by covid, my faw teachers passing away and then a litteral war starting (i still finished my bachelor) but somehow AI evolving into what it is now was the worst thing that happened to me(psycologically) and my art pursuits in 2022 and past that
and a chunk of rocket crushed 1/3 of my academy this march , art just cant get any rest these days...

I was a little scared too im a 3D artist so it’s a little different compared to 2D
Will we get cool new tools and plugins to play with that help us work more efficiently or will we get replaced.
I’m eager to download some of the new plugins I’ve seen for blender. I don’t think it will be that easy for 3D modelers to get replaced making a 3d model is just 1 tiny step I could just download a 3D model that is for commercial use and Continue my work from there there’s sure it’s not as fun but the Client doesn’t care about how i feel that it’s lazy to do that he just wants his stuff done as soon as possible and in the end it’s better to work smarter not harder, just making a model is the first step.
I can do : sculpting and poly modeling, rigging , uv mapping, texturing, some basic animation skills, photosbop, and Sony Vegas, after effects.
And with 3D software it’s basically an endless learning process
There is no such thing as mastering a 3D software because there is always more to learn you cannot master something like blender or maya. You may able to become proficient in using a particular 3D software and understand its tools and features but there will always be room for improvement because its constantly evolving with new technologies and techniques to discover. I feel like i barely scratched the surface after 5 years

The degree isn't worth much to begin with unless you're looking for a specific position in a company. Its like coding, programming, and software design- you're better off making something of your own you can fully monetize in a feasible manner than risking getting replaced by whatever the cheapest alternative is later, or just flatout wasting said degree cuz you don't get chosen for any positions

I was considering a degree in art, although after I left the military it was more financially feasible to go to IT school… until the 2023 tech crash one week before my graduation. I don’t know of any other trades which are great for crippled people.

Frankly - and this goes even if AIart never existed or could somehow be stopped - if the possibility of making money, fame, wealth off one's art is a high point in the decision tree, GET OUT. And considering "Art School" is a big factor. Not classes or online classes but college, career, etc.
Art is one of those things that only flourished in scarcity. Very few people got into art on a "Professional" level mostly because they were called to it and really couldn't do anything else. Thus a few (Dali, Picasso) got to earn big bucks and be famous while alive. Despite being so kooky they'd make Van Gogh look like Sean Connery or Mr Rogers.
The marketing of stable 'professional' artists (and illustrators which artists) happens now and again but the expansion of scifi/fantasy in mainstream led to more art schools. This means a bunch of "Pros" with degrees and debt and expectations of being professional. The companies loved this, able to ignore the "Dali" types with exponential talent but didn't show up to work on time and wanted to do their creativity vs "Hey Kids! Here's the Joe Camel and smoking baby power hour!" corporate excretion. Also the "Pros" had to take abuse from businessmen so they'd line up to be spat in the face or punched in it (Figuratively) for work every day like other worker slaves.
And they never needed AIart - thanks to the internet "There are a MILLION working artists in the world" - professional quality illustrators rather. Ones who work in a country where $8 a MONTH is...a suck wage but beats ruining the body for $4 a month in deadly work or they could make a tiny fortune but at the cost of having the children and wife (you know) with lecherous tourists.
They rely on the fact also that artists are FOOLS. And writers. I'm insulting myself too. We'll do our work with very little reward and they'll keep us down unless we sign our souls to them in life then jump in and exploit us after death. They'll OPENLY steal from us and the courts will back them up. Lichenstein. Bob Finger. on and on. But if we legit are creatives we'll do it anyways.
    So - TL/DR - what I'm trying to say.
1 - We need to stop the politics for "Halp us aiart turk r jurb!" - even IF we stop it, the 900K ultra poor in the 3rd world will scab us - and we'd not be able to stop them or try since they are 'fellow artists' and we sympathize.
2 - We need to push for UBI - Universal Basic Income - where we end corporate welfare and turn it back into supplementary income. This means more of us will be able to have a tiny check coming in as a base without the conditions of welfare or unemployment insurance. Eventually an AGI could be used to distribute labor and resources and create a "Jetsons" style future that'd be paradise for an artist who does works for their own sake.
3 - For us stuck in investing in our lives trying to be good artists, writers, musicians - we go INDIE. No more trying to find "Jurbs" for some corporation but like the office slaves and warehouse person who isn't an illegal immigrant showing up in suits and bearing one's soul with a resume. We make our own stuff (not quitting the day job) and sell it. We fight for being able to get in the bookstores and retails - to break that monopoly - and to stop the major online store from increasing 'rules' designed to eventually lock out those.
BTW - notice all the STEM stuff?
Same thing. Used to be only a few people got things like "Chemical Engineering Degrees" so they could get huge wages even if smelly social misfits. Now we got tons of "Job applicants" so those people are going out. Problem is it takes a rare person to concentrate and care about some things. And it's needed for bridges, decisions that can cost or make millions in a manufacturing process, rocket ships... But STEM gets tons of people with the approximate skills at the doorstep to apply for the job, lowering the wages they can demand. Supply and Demand - just they want to mess with it to mess with people.

I'm literally not concerned at all... I've got a story I simply want to tell... So I'm going to tell it... And I'm going to draw it... Because I like drawing...
"But how do you prove you did things and not have your work stolen by A.I.?"
I draw on paper before inking them in photoshop... Save ALL my Sketches and Drafts... And also I save ALL my scripts... I also ONLY write MY characters and MY stories... AND even more I write and draw my comics in such a way with various repeat panels that even I don't know how I draw a page layout until I actually draw it...
It's literally impossible for an A.I. to mimic me because I don't even know what I'm doing until I do it... I just do it...
