What a briliant dialogue. I understood what Dr de Quincey meant by saying of not only talking to each other, but feeling each other in harmony. You both presented different arguments from the philosophical and the parapsychological background, but I could feel the gentleness and camaraderie of not fighting or arguing but trying to help each other on understanding better, and complementing each other. I applaud you for that. I believe that old philosophical talks of, say, Plato and Aristotle would be conducted in a similar fashion.
Another view of the future is that all possible and impossible futures pre-exist already in an infinite potential ideation matrix or pattern of omniscient consciousness outside of time-space altogether. Therefore, in a way, the future is already in the past (having been previously organized in consciousness in its potential forms but not yet introduced into time-space) and "waiting" to emerge (or not) presently outside of time-space though not yet perceived (because it hasn't yet condensed into the presence of any conscious being's awareness yet) and when any conscious self-aware being focuses his/her consciousness (his/her sensory awareness, desire, preference, belief/truth gestalt representation) in a particular way whether consciously or unconsciously, a particular time-space pattern momentarily-locally emerges from the pre-existent potential future and becomes the "apparent" present before once again moving back into the past (into that infinite matrix again) which though no longer perceived is yet present in its "previous" or "modified" gestalt, perhaps impacted by memory or other faculties of reflective consciousness. The future emerges from Consciousness as does everything else that "seems" to be in our awareness.
In the woman's dream, she had received a piece of golden scarab jewellery as a gift. As Jung was looking around for a meaningful coincidence, he noticed an iridescent beetle at the window. The meaningfulness of the synchronicity was not the beetle, but the receiving of a gift.
Your comment was thought-provoking. Perhaps Jung's whole theory resulted from an instance of apophenia. As I was mulling over this possibility, in the kitchen, I heard my housemate cry out -- startled. He pointed to the window, and there was a large iridescent beetle. They are large, impressive insects. I captured that one and freed it outdoors. I think the message is that Jung was probably authentically startled by the beetle in his window.
This has been your most brilliant talk to date (as far as I have seen). Nothing quite touches the edge of understanding as synchronicity and its meaning (or questioning of meaning) of self/other. Ultimately nothing can be known objectively, within the subjective experience. Even perceived limitations may themselves be only temporary, constrained by something like knowledge, faith, or practice. So, life is lived by faith alone at all times. The meaning we attribute to reality, the very essence of not just the reflective conclusions but even the momentary experience via the senses is itself a self-deriving defining of the world. Whether we are happy/sad/etc about this self, and whether the ongoing change of this self is voluntary or not, is still a matter of faith and the most central question of existence as it frames all experiences expanded to include anything 'other'.
What a brilliant dialogue between two great minds. Thanks very much to Christian de Quincey and Jeffrey Mishlove for bringing and sharing it with us. Best regards to both of you !
I know there really are coincidences in this world. But I also know there are synchronicities. So I know I'm actually experiencing a synchronicity when the coincidences have gotten ridiculous and out of control. Believe me. It's happened.
So glad to have discovered you right now. So nice somebody talking finally about some- thing I have been aware of since 60 years ago, by understanding C. G. Jung and a huge amount of personal experiences! There`s such a difference between this over-conscious awareness of our all-uniting, timeless SELF-SOUL, and our so limited brain-consciousness: This mere EGO-mind. Congratulations! A. L. M. , Thursday, June 29th, 2017.
Hope you don't mind me sharing my weird synchronistic event, which happened to me today, I had to tell someone; family and the majority of friends wouldn't have the ears for this. I was returning from doing some food shopping at the local store, my mind was very much on what I can afford and getting through christmas, it's not been a great year, but marginally better than last year and not in the same situation I was last year (this is key to the synchronisity). Last year, in the same week as this, I found it neccesary to go to a foodbank, I found myself on benefits and struggling to get by. I took home a food parcel on the 14th December (I keep a diary), I was obviously upset about the situation but got through it. Today, on my way back from the local food store, I was but two minutes away from where I live and taking a short cut through a side street, I would normally take, when I saw a plastic bag full of food, I looked around and there was no one there or close by, I looked inside it and it contained tinned food and dry goods, the kind a foodbank would give out, I was certain this was a foodbank parcel, there was absolutely no one around and was clearly left there. I did take it, I felt it was some kind of sign, what of and by who I do not know. It just took me back, as it will be a year to this week exactly that I went to the foodbank...it has really left me thinking.
As noted in another segment with Charles Muses, he points out that Time is larger than Space, a moment of time includes the whole universe. He also said we change moment to moment -- we are like living fountains of energy. So our being is in flux and flowing and that might explain some of the referenced sensitivities and synchronicities.
My good brothers "Do Not be a victim to the Ouroboros of your mind" Blessed be our brothers & their teachings: -Insanity & Outsanity (Lily) -Reality Tunnels (Wilson) -I know that I know Nothing (Socrates)
I'm glad Jeffrey challenged de Quincey on the matter of time. I think a better Jungian perspective is that the larger Self is beyond time and space as we know it.
That was not a scarab beetle tapping on the window in the dream anecdote, it was the closest to a scarab beetle that could be found in Switzerland, as described in one of Jungs books (Man and his Symbols?). It's still an excellent example of synchronicity.
Also regarding time: how do we know, categorically, that we are not actually in the past - as in part of a continuum, like a river (to use that as a metaphor) whereby at any point in it your "present" is somebody else's past or future? It could possibly be more non-linear even than that. The "Many Worlds" Hypothesis and Simulation Theory are very compatible. *Moreover, in an informational universe Meaning fundamentally supersedes causality because meaning is intrinsic to information.* And for any of you that still believe we are in a material universe you need to get current by going and researching the latest in physics, especially Simulation Theory. Democritus was smacked down, hard. I hope this helps. Thanks for all your great work Jeffrey!
Dr. Mishlov - Having researched the perplexities of meaningful coincidences ( synchronicities) for fifty years my experience has been that few discussions ever get much past the shared experience of awe. To each his own. However as you and Christian De Quincy well understand the important questions and implications of this intellectually challenging and emotionally stirring phenomena raise present a pressing need to invite continuing dialogue on this most fascinating topic. My research indicates that alternative theories of synchronicities will be derived from the combined ontological and epistemological basic assumptions concering the nature of reality and how we know reality, plus an assumed understanding of psychodynamics, plus alternative first assumptions about the definition and experience of 'spirituality', plus basic assuptions concerning the esoteric occult, plus other assumptions about scientific method. Applying critical thinking in attempting to make rational sense out of what appears to defy rational explanation hence Jung's categorical assertion that a causal rational explanation of these odd events is not even thinkable to me raises more important questions than provides absolute answers. For example to dismiss causality as an inadequte explanatory link between the internal subjective event and the external objective event which comprises the structure of every synchronicity does not rule out the possibility of some other form of causality. Similarly there is the crucial issue as to a theorist's conceptualzation as to the meaning of meaning and the assumption as to how meanings are generated - and the relationship between alternative forms of causality combined with alternative conceptualuzations of meaning. Enough - you get my point. Thank you both for your rich discussion which has once again stirred my passionate interest to continue to research this cutting edge material.
Gibbs - did you see the recent interview with Bruce Damer on this channel entitled Universal Love? He recounted an amazing synchronicity towards the end of the interview, do check it out if you haven't already!
I agree with the pre cognition theory. Many times I seem to pick up on which route would be fastest to a certain destination. Sometimes I even get a noticeable urge to go a certain route or change route. Then, if I (logically) dismiss the urge and keep course, most times I regret it, and wish I would have listened to myself. Maybe I'm picking up on the feeling and frustrations of drivers ahead on the same route.?.
Jeffrey, I have the true answer, scientifically provable and true answer to this. Both experiential and empirically, but it'll take the whole book I'm writing about synchronicities and other, truly unprecedented phenomena I've experienced, to get across the earthshaking implications of the epllanation of such phenomeona. So, as just a hint, the side you're leaning on is, the chaos theory quantum physics consciousness side is much nearer to one property of the truth than Mr de Quincey's. Keep up the great work. And my recommendation is to get some worthy proponent of the multiverse hypotheses. Which is true, by the way, and time and I both, shall tell. Cheers

Quatumn probability doesn’t explain the phenomenological experience of surety, that many, say, ER Nurses operate under. The internal experience is not a hunch, but rather an intense persuasion that something is definitely going to happen with such and such patient. That surety is rewarded by saving the patient from an unexpected flatline. Premonitions operate with direct information about events, and not generalized guesswork. Hi Jeffrey, I'm looking for one of your episodes where you discussed your own synchronistic experience whilst in college, I remember you recounting entering a house, and perhaps Seneca also being mentioned. Thought I'd find the story here under synchronicity, or the Seneca episode but I can't seem to find it, hope you can help, thank you for your incredible channel and for sharing this online with us, it's most valuable 💜
Wonderful thanks. The variable length of the present could be what accounts for this kind of precognition. How long is the present moment if it is not a variable? +/- 1 second? You experience the present and then it diminishes in duration,. :D
@10:30 on he basically gives the definition of how the Tarot works. The reader being sensitive to the trajectories of manifesting reality in the psychic realm and having the skill of recognizing their synchronistic relations in the symbolic forms of the deck , most predominately the major arcana. The implications from there are nearly unlimited. Welcome to the next revolution of mankind.
At 20:55 I was analysing my own thought, wondering if I’m just projecting my inner thoughts onto the outside world and mistaking that as having meaning ........now I’m confused ....That was a synchronised event in itself .
I have many of Jung's books including Synchronicity. The fact that 'meaning' is entirely subjective whether triggered by insects, Tarot cards or I Ching sticks seems to disprove his acausal thesis of outward events signposting internal conflicts. We see what we want to see and as much as we are ready, willing and able to see. It is all too easy to get enmeshed in the phenomena of more or less unconscious psychic content and the florrid theories to support them. The Chinese who new a thing or two about the working of the mind simply noted that like events tended to clump together like frog spawn. I have noticed this e.g. in my house light bulbs tend to burn out in 3's.
Hi there. A few thoughts: 5:40 but: meaning is causal... perhaps we should say: deterministic? What I want to say is that we have to find finer differentiations here. There are several culprits. One is that human nature is ever unconsciously trying to evade the fact that our self, mind as well as understanding, is limited, whereas the universe is not and the nature is at least far beyond our scope. But nature is meaning, in German: "der Sinn", or as Taoists say: "That what is, through itself". Taking that will give that meaning must be in every moment, but only some of it is revealed to us, and even less we do understand. But "Sinn" can't be acausal ever, that would not make sense. But it can very well be, that we cannot understand how it came. And that would be: not deterministic. I've learned this difference from a German physics professor in an lecture on quantum physics, and I think it's important. In that light one could say: "Synchronicity" is a trait of all life, when we can see it, but do not understand how.
Thank you. Great talk!! What about future probabilities informing the past as well as the present----and the past informing the future as well as the present? Wouldn't it make sense that there would be feedback in both directions? In the present we can sense probabilities but we also take past data into account. Would not the future also benefit from data that has already been created? Also, I have come to think of time as circles around me rather than a straight line. The present is in the center and includes those elements of both the past and future that are a part of my life now. The circle beyond the present is potential. We could call it the future, but to me it seems I am creating the present from potential (not "future"), sensing possibilities/probabilities, and referring to data already created (but I don't experience the past as fixed and dead. It is evolving through all the feedback loops. As it evolves, the present and potential change so there are no paradoxes.
10:00 mark. Uhm...if we were talking about the stock market I would agree but I've had too many premonitions that present data at my disposal could not predict. An example I've experienced was a dream I had about my friend Jackson from the USMC. He was living in FL after he got out and I was in PA attending college. We lost touch and hadn't spoken for 3 yrs. He was a 6'7" skinny guy. In my dream that night I envisioned meeting him again but in my dream he was a body builder. Well after I awoke I went to take a shower. After I came back to my room I had a message from a missed call while I was in the shower. It was from Jackson. I didn't have time to call back so I shot him an email telling him about my dream as well. He responded by sending me a photo showing his muscle gains from working out at the gym for the last 2 yrs. But you know what's more fascinating. I had a dream about a scarab beetle artwork in a window pane then I came across this video later in the day. Even more interesting is that I was deleting photos off my phone today. The photos were of my alarm clock I had taken back in October 2019. I sent those photos to Jackson on fb to show him that my 35 yr old Sony clock was still working. The time on the clock was 3:00. The exact moment you mention scarab for the first time in this video. 3:00
@@richardcarter9107 I have a bunch of experiences. Some of them I shared in my video "Do you have the 6th sense". But my first RUclips video, "How to hack a cell phone with a magnet" actually came to me in a dream. The dream showed me how to do it to a Tee. Unfortunately I do not control my dreams or visions. They just come out of no where. When I'm awake and a vision comes, it's like a switch. Everything I see with my eyes switches to virtual reality, that's the best way I can describe it.
@@richardcarter9107 Just a weird question but I thought I would ask. If it makes no sense then just ignore it. Do you have a job that involves windows?
Synchronicity only make simulation theory less likely. Synchronicity dosnt happen in simulations. It points more towards everything being a projection from the subconscious mind. A dream
+Wizard Garber I think a lot of people hold out on this one (ie. fixed future) because they come to the table with the assumption that free will exists. For as much as I'm of the Hermetic viewpoint I also agree with Sam Harris on a lot of things - full determinism being one of them, and largely because I see a false sense of ownership for our actions, actions and impulses that really flow through us rather than ever originating from us.
In some sense Time exists. It exists in the sense that we experience something - that we call the experience of Time. I think Time exists, but it is not something that passes us by. I think Time is something that we move through.
Consciousness does not exist in space but in time? WTF? What does he define as space? Space is full of conscious life. My not be the same as human conscious but conscious just the same. How are stars born and how do they die as an example. What about the differance between Cronus and Adoni?
Oh he misunderstands Time. The future is not a fixed thing that "will exist but does not yet exist", but an infinite set of moments with different probabilities, all of which may exist at some point, and already do exist, as potentials. The moments that are more likely, given the present, are the ones that have more potential energy. Because of this they have a kind of gravitational effect backwards in time. This attraction is real and can cause retro-causation.
Amazing conversation

This process explains steps in other topics, too, like why memories change.
For a second I thought the ceramic between them might burst
Past, present and future are concomitant happenings.
Once again MBT theory makes sense...

There, that's easier.
@@richardcarter9107 Just a weird question but I thought I would ask. If it makes no sense then just ignore it.
Do you have a job that involves windows?

Look into ST deeply and most conundrums are answered.
Synchronicity only make simulation theory less likely. Synchronicity dosnt happen in simulations. It points more towards everything being a projection from the subconscious mind. A dream

What’s the statue between them?

at around 8.56 look for an orb, spirit intelligence is present during this interview
An odd synchronicity indeed that appears right as the words "Accidentally" are uttered.
That's a convenient way to criticize the assertion that "Time is an illusion." You define that it is, therefore it exists.
Belief and experience are a binary when dealt with as such. Psychology needs a serious makeover. Reality is all.
I agree with most of de Quincey's philosophy, except for Time. He's unwilling to make the leap to a transcendent realm where Time does not exist.
Find me, your future is epic

Consciousness does not exist in space but in time? WTF? What does he define as space? Space is full of conscious life. My not be the same as human conscious but conscious just the same. How are stars born and how do they die as an example.
What about the differance between Cronus and Adoni?
Ofcourse its 27 minutes long 😂
of course the future exists now Einstein proved it. Go travel at lightspeed for a year and then come talk to me.
This is not psychology but psychoses. :(
Oh he misunderstands Time.
