In my experience that's not the case. But I have seen peace activists gain more understanding and acceptance for wht we engage in war, for example natl security and snuffing out the biggesst threats at their source

@@tikanni7251 in the military you break weakness. You break ego. You make them realize they are normal people that arent bettee than anyone else. @@manfromthemoon815 Wtf? If anyone would advocate for peace, it would be veterans. War is absolute hell and vets know it more than some gun-ho civilian on some nationalistic high
To be honest, you don't need to be brainwashed or desensitized in order to kill someone. A lot of soldiers sent to a war zone for the first time aren't ready to kill and secretly don't think they can kill. But as soon as you hear bullets whizzing past your ear or someone detonates 100 pounds of explosives next to your vehicle, the decision is made for you. It's instinctual to defend yourself. Basically, the military puts trained men in a dangerous situation, knowing that they will have to defend themselves and kill the opposing side. Do this enough times and it's called a war.
Some people will not pull that trigger even if they are in danger. Someone who has thought about the scenario over ad over and has had to pull that trigger over and over until it's muscle memory would be more likely to do it in the moment.
Except every war that the US has fought in since WWII has been to further it's own interests and profit. Not to protect the American people. Please realize that the industrial complex is driving these wars, not a need for protection and not a heroic sentiment by our "leaders".

Take the movie " Born on the Fourth of July" as an example. The dude enlisted in Vietnam due to JFK's speech. HE still does to this day.

@Arjun and Arnav Menon i dont have a political opinion. I just watch the vids bcuz both sides look really retarded when they argue and its really funny xD
I am old (70+) and a Vietnam veteran. War is an abomination. There was no "homecoming." Just years of being alone an fighting the demons most of which were there before I knew it. I have six children and 16 grandchildren. When I was diagnosed with PTSD one of the first things I did was call my children and their mothers and make amends (as the term is used in a 12 step program). I would have done anything to not have them grow up with the specter looming over us. One of my children is still on active duty. There has got to be a better way to do this. And hopefully one that leads to world peace...
I’ve also always appreciated how much respect the peace activists had for the soldiers, it’s incredibly cordial and very respectful and wonderful the way they interact
People criticized the game for showing high violence and killing children and women. But that's what war is. That's what soldiers have to do. Many people got to know that war wasn't just soldiers killing each other

God, when that fella in the ball cap started talking about how he's just trying to put food on the table and protect the poor guys to the left and right of him...From his position on the bottom rung of all this, that's as noble as it gets. But when you look at the layers and layers of bureaucrats that gave him the choice between this, and seeing his family go hungry... Nobody should be manipulated or coerced like that. I'm sorry for all his losses.
@Paladonian13 I personally know 2 people who were homeless prior to joining the army. I know a third who lived out of his car. I know plenty more who joined because they had no options including me. As far as pay goes yeah the pay isn't great but it's free food, housing, healthcare and it gives a way to get educated once you move on. If you have no options then it's definitely a way to improve your life and take care of your family if you have one.
It doesn't have to be 'free' OR 'sign your life away to a war you had nothing to do with.' There are lots of options we could explore between those extremes.
I was going to join the military, because I was on the verge of becoming homeless and I couldn’t. I was told I couldn’t cause I was int he muddle of a divorce and going through child custody battles. I lost my home, because I didn’t want my daughter to be homeless I let my ex have custody of her, because I had no family in the area to get help from or fall back on while I get things in order. Years later I realized how bad it would have been for me to be int he military, i already have Complex-PTSD and being there would have put me through a world of hell and likely mess me up further.. but I didn’t go and I still was met with hard times, more traumatic experiences, losing almost everything I own three times in my life. I look back and wonder if being in the military then would have saved me from Financial disparity and homeless, but that train off as a 6 foot tall woman who later found themselves Gender fluid, being in the military may have been more damaging, it might have been more helpful in other ways, but knowing I could be put in places and situation that would make me have to pull a trigger and take a life would have likely been the straw that broke the camels back and I would have eventually become another statistic for veterans who commit suicide.. leaving my daughter even more without a mother if I didn’t die on the battle field.. I have been torn at the thought of joining for years, mostly cause the thought of traveling around the world when I don’t have the means to do so and the thought of getting a college education when I don’t have the means to do so sounds increasingly appealing, but is it at all worth it when your psychological health is also on the line.. the think about PTSD is that weather it’s domestic or from war. We both understand how it feels. I’ve been able to talk to veterans and I describe what mine is like and they say it’s the same for them, the feeling, the triggers, it’s the fear and it floods the whole system and in a single moment we both get each other and I see this look on their face that says “they understand” and “I’m not alone in this” another reason I think it’s important for people to realize the impact of war isn’t just in the moment, but everlasting. Any veteran will have a hard time admitting there is something wrong, but every time I open up about my PTSD, they ask what war I was in and I tell them it was childhood and adulthood trauma or i short hand it with “it’s domestic” and right away they understand I didn’t get mine from war, but that doesn’t mean I won’t understand how being triggered feels or how terrible flash backs are or getting nightmares and not being able to sleep for fear of.. sometimes fear itself. My military friend never felt comfortable unless he could do a reconnaissance of the space he was in and if he hears a noise he feels the need to check it out. He would apologize every single time he did and I told him that it was okay and if he felt the need to check then he was free to do so if it made him feel more comfortable and safe. He always appreciated me for giving him that freedom and letting him know that I would never judge him for that. Veterans need that understanding, they need that freedom to check around corners and make sure the parameter is safe. It’s how they know they’re safe and a war takes the feeling of safety away from you for a very long time, making it hard to relax almost at all.

I feel like you should make longer versions of these. I feel like debate or discussion isn't really made when these are just ten minutes covering several talking points.
Sure, but I’m sure many people would love to see the full discussions. On the other common ground episodes there’s an alarm when their talking time is up, which I feel often stops the conversations right when they’re going somewhere which halts the point of these things entirely.

It was odd because I was expecting the usual "you're all racist" or "all you do is kill women and kids", the usual bollocks you get from "peace activists", or just a complete naivety from them. so it was certainly eye opening to not only see them getting along but to have an actual realistic view of how the world actually is.
This is the first jubilee VS episode where it was actually civil between the two parties and not argumentative because they actually understand each other. Very enjoyable
Yeah I don't know very many fellow veterans that aren't also Peace Activists. People who have seen the horrors of war are likely to never want to see it happen again.
I have to disagree with you, Noah. The fact that people may be argumentative does NOT mean that they are inherently uncivil. And quite frankly, if there's no heat in a discussion, the discussion will be boring as hell, because they either have no passion for the issue or they already agree, at which point, why bother with the discussion in the first place.
Actually, that's Theodore Roosevelt's saying in a letter to Henry Sprague in 1900. The actual words are "Speak softly and carry a big stick." He, however. claimed it was a West African saying. Tony Stark simply restated it (well, the writers did) and changed it to what you quoted.
Nuclear weapons, how should I put it, increased the percentage of peace? WW1 and 2 wouldn't had happened it people had nukes back then. Everybody's scared shitless that nukes get launched. So yeah, bigger stick works. Now wars are fought in places where sticks are top-tier weapons
This series does what happens way too little these days: Face to face discussions. Many of the verbal conflicts between groups of people escalate because the internet is unpersonal and portraying extreme positions as more prevalent than they are in reality.

A lot of veterans don't want to kill the children! They are killing kids, and that is horrible... but it's for a reason. Most of the time, all these kids know is that death doesn't matter, but saying that these men, risking their lives for YOUR freedom, freedom to believe whatever you want, and stuff like that are just doing it for the pay check, you apparently haven't seen how much money they actually get, and it's not much for the danger they Are put through. These men aren't having a field day, no they are fighting, and you are just so ungrateful..

Sioneink It means that if you strongly believe in something/a cause, that you should be willing to put your time and money into working toward that belief.
Think about it like this. Imagine you donate a dollar everyday to a cause or many different causes. If you and 1,000,00 other people did that, places/people/causes would get so much help. We think a dollar or an hour of our time is not significant, but if EVERYONE did.. think about how big that is.
True, but it's "impractical". Say a group of guerrilla warfare guys are fighting to get food for their families. They blow up the gov't buildings, expecting to liberate the country to obtain resources. They gov't counters calling them terrorists. Say, they stop and have a meeting of the minds. Tables turn south, which leads to someone official getting assassinated. War continues. Another way to look at this. Say people hate their gov't. Do peaceful protest. The gov't isn't trying to make changes. They get people to change the protestors minds from the inside. They eventually split up. Another way, say a group of people talk on the internet and really get something started, similar to "Occupy Wall Street", and they make solid changes. But people nonaffiliated with the group say what they're doing is wrong or "evil". Now, a group of "anti-supporters" forms up to suppress this order. Either way you slice it, their will never be "world peace". Just do what you can for your neck of the woods. If people see a pattern and money-making situation (similar to the birth of the internet/Declaration of Independence) they'll follow the path of less resistance.
Loki Animations if we are in the middle east for oil then why was gas $5 a gallon at one point. If we are in it for the oil why are 90% reliant on our own oil resources from alaska and the gulf of mexico.
This really is a great series. Bringing people from vastly different walks of life to have really substantive discussion, which oftentimes at least seems far less polarized than I would imagine it to be, is almost like art. Every time I see a new video I tend to imagine people getting heated while not really listening to one another, but it´s a pleasant surprise each time to see considerate, honest, and empathetic perspectives on these issues.
I wish these were longer cause I don't think the vet meant it that way. What I was hearing was that in order to achieve peace the world would have to all come to an agreement and no matter what some people or groups or countries will always have different ideas about what's ok and what isn't. It's not really realistic to think that this African tribe who believes in genital mutilation will just say "ok we'll stop" just cause you asked, so if you truly want world peace you can't really rule out war and violence.
Yes, this is great series! Please keep it up and develop it further. I totally dig that each episode is quite short but maybe you want to consider (depending on the workload you can handle) having a more extensive period of debate and interaction and provide a short and a long version.
It is only the veterans of any nation that truly comprehend the absolute horrors of war. Us civilians will never truly understand what happened in that situation until they are inside of it.
@daniel albo eh I hate to argue semantics but I disagree. Yes technically the word "necessary" has a second definition that means the same thing as "inevitable" but I was using the word with it's primary definition. Something that is "needed". I don't think war is necessary or needed. Disputes can be resolved without resorting to violence. However, due to imperfect human nature there will always be those who do choose to resort to violence. That's what I meant by saying that war is unnecessary but unavoidable.
@@moviemanreviews5577 Then wouldn't you agree that war would be necessary against those who choose to resort to violence? Maybe it would be a solely defensive war, but my point still stands.
Your wife, children and all your cousins and extended family are trapped and won't be released. What is the move you make that is necessary to get them back? The extent that world peace is theoretically possible, ends after asking the question if it is possible.

But they didn't enter the war against Nazi-Germany until 1941, at that time the Wehrmacht and SS had already slaughtered countless people, soldiers and civilians alike. I agree that it was a war that had to be fought in order to save the world from Hitler, but it's not like the US immediately stepped in as the saviour of humanity.
Kiwiboii Supertramp in a way they were the savior of humanity the French had been over ran at that point and completely occupied by the Nazis the only main force left in the fight were the British who were barely hanging on. When the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor under the Emperor’s direct order the Japanese admiral who carried out the order didn’t agree with doing it because he knew what America would do in the war. So I think it is safe to say that America in a stepped in and protected humanity.
But he was inaccurate when he said that America stepped in because Hitler was killing Jews. Because they had no clue about the death camps and killings till they got into Germany. They joined the war off of many reasons that were lighted with the spark of Pearl Harbor. German U-boats we’re sinking American cruise lines mistaking them for British supply boats in the Atlantic, hitler sent the Mexican government a plead to attack on the U.S. that the Mexican government just handed directly to us, and of course when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor and we declared war on them, and shortly after Germany declared war on the United States.
We literally joined the war the same fucking year as the USSR. Stop saying we joined “late” when we’d been providing lend lease to the Allies since 1939.
Matthew Taylor can I just say thank fuck for the brits though. If they didn’t win the Battle of Britain d-day most likely wouldn’t have happened or at least wouldn’t have happened the way it did. I don’t want to be incorrect here because I’m no history expert but I look at the options for the Ally’s and it doesn’t look good. They wouldn’t have been able to surround hitler or if they did millions would have died, most likely Russian soldiers as everyone else would have been taken. And I guess only pockets of resistance fighters would have helped along. None of this did happen though as the brits with their spitfires held on. Please correct me if I’m wrong as I say I’m not as good on WW2 as I am on WW1. :).

A personal problem I see with the "its them or me, I want to come home to my family" narrative is that the soldier chose to be their. The US military does not conscript citizens.
The thing is if we dont have people choose to do that, then who will? I'd rather volunteer than have to drop my life to go fight cuz of the draft. They are saying that because that is the reality of their circumstance
If we don’t have people who volunteer there will have to be a draft in order to fight a war. The reason veterans say that is because they do want to go home to their family.
@@Pete230 The draft isn't right no matter what. People get to choose how to spend their time/life/job/whatever. If a store can't make people work for it then why is the government any different? Because it's big? Because it makes laws? Because it wants you to do certain things? It still doesn't have any more right or any right to make you work for it than the store does! Also I'm not risking my life for a bureaucrat. Remember the draft is the best tool for the military industrial complex. Also wars aren't excuses to take away rights.
That the military brainwashes it soldiers is not a secret or just an opinion. Its a fact. The military hires psychologist to find ways to make people kill. A simple examples is the change of the shape of targets, in world war 1 soldiers got trained with round shaped targets. While now they are training on human shaped targets. That little example goes to show that they are trying to form killing machines in the fields. What psychological they suffer from afterwards is not important to them
Alan no targets have legs to shoot to wound, if you were in the military you would know that everything that is taught to you in regards to combat and weapons is to kill. Point blank you are taught kill or be killed and not once told to give a fuck about the enemy having family that loves them. An older mantra within the Marine Corps was "kill babies."
Because, in the moment, you have to put it in the back of your mind so you can focus. But, it never goes away. I can't speak for combat though. I nearly died in a car crash. I was trapped and watched the inferno (that had already consumed an SUV and the 3 people inside) closing the distance. I pushed the fear away so I could focus and find a way out. Some nights, it's hard to sleep because I relive it.

Pearl Peaceful I was going to join the military but...(excuse excuse excuse)

Actually, that's Theodore Roosevelt's saying in a letter to Henry Sprague in 1900. The actual words are "Speak softly and carry a big stick." He, however. claimed it was a West African saying. Tony Stark simply restated it (well, the writers did) and changed it to what you quoted.

It means that if you strongly believe in something/a cause, that you should be willing to put your time and money into working toward that belief.
Think about it like this. Imagine you donate a dollar everyday to a cause or many different causes. If you and 1,000,00 other people did that, places/people/causes would get so much help. We think a dollar or an hour of our time is not significant, but if EVERYONE did.. think about how big that is.
So many open-minded people all together, all striving to help the world, one way or another.
Truly beautiful ❤️
if the human race does things like these, i think there will be world peace eventually.
Navaros Nope. Because humans have to go through something to understand it. If they don't go through it, they won't understand.
Navaros As long as people want to kill other people there will never be100% peace!!

Vet: "... and the only way to get them to accept our culture is through some sort of violence"
Peace Activist: "That's dangerous..."
Jessa Watters It also can be conflicting ideologies. "Who are YOU to force me to adopt your values/ideology?" You easily get conflict just from that.

"War is a necessary evil"
War is entirely unnecessary but wholly inevitable.
"World peace is possible"
Theoretically yes but realistically no.
All of these veterans are too young to have served before 9/11
So they 100% fought in wars that were there for no reason

I definitely agree and somehow it trains us to listen and view things in a different perspectives then giving our opinions in a controlled and respective manner.
The guy saying the only way to get them to accept our culture is through some sort of violence is terrifying. Just because one culture is different then yours doesnt mean theyre bad. Colonialism is never the answer.

When one side is committing genocide, someone needs to stop then. Usually with a military force.
But that's not what we do, we don't lift a finger unless it will benefit us. We didn't join WW2 to stop the Nazis we joined it because it was a threat. there are countless atrocities committed that we don't bother with.

It's so easy to say something when your safe at home with a full belly.
Britain was the unofficial global Policeman prior to 1945 before handing over the role, in layman's terms. Big burden to carry.

U think there is a real threat for the US to get taken over or to get manipulated by all those poor middle eastern countries which are invaded and thousands are killed just to maintain the power of the US
esosj all those wars and conflicts that occur at middle east help US to keep the area under control while it is selling billions of dollars worth weapons
Keren Danielle Avelino If only it was really for peace and safety... i think that's the saddest part.
Keren Danielle Avelino the last war that protected your nation was WW2, everything after has basically been mass murder
This is the one episode where I believe that everybody on each side is level-headed and smart, and can listen to and appreciate the other sides points.
A personal problem I see with the "its them or me, I want to come home to my family" narrative is that the soldier chose to be their. The US military does not conscript citizens.
Some don't. A lot of people join for college.
Well not anymore for now. The selective service system is still in place so it's basically a dormant draft.
Absolutely beautiful. This made me tear up
If soldiers are so desensitized to killing, then why do so many veterans come back with PTSD?
Because war fucks people up in different ways. And people cope with being fucked up differently.
