You won't believe it but I do it all in a 2010 prius. I am going to take the next 6 months to rlly ponder if I wanna commit to a van. The space would be nice but I do gig apps so the gas milage is amazing. 2010, still gets over 50mpg. If anything I'd prolly find a bigger prius. The air conditioner overnight is gold, it runs off the hybrid system
Right on! A bigger Prius. I hear that loud and clear. We are getting closer. I bought the Lightning. Doesnt have the range of a Prius but can perform some of its climate tricks and quite a few more. And if gas was at about $4 per gal my truck would get about the equivalent miles per dollar as your Prius!!! Electric van is what im waiting on. Yes they exist, but the range is strangely low -like 100-150 miles depending on various factors. And they dont offer larger battery sizes like the Lightning. The Lightnings range with the big battery is still low-but its possible to do road life with 200- 300 miles of range when you throw in the other perks and features. Merry XMas
This is the most epic van life speech in the history of humanity! This is the Rambo-Die Hard-Blood Sport script of the van life world. Merry Christmas.
Man, you nailed this whole thing. That first time you don’t know where to go or what to do is a real hammer to the ego. Ironically, I’ve committed to being home for the holidays and it feels like a prison 😂. It’s truly surreal to wrestle with being normal even for a few weeks! Great video!
I admit when I first encountered this channel, I got a different impression of what this was based upon first glance of the interior design choices...🤣I really don't care about van life per se, but what draws me in is a sense of earnestness, maybe it's the "New England sensibility". It's a similar feeling to when I watched "This Old House" on PBS growing up. I have no real affinity for fixing up houses, but I enjoyed the craftsmanship and mentality of the show. I really admire this channel.
Merry Christmas. This video has actually helped me to know that everything is gonna be alright, you’re right the bigger the risk the bigger the reward. You just helped to give me confidence to really push myself to the next level. Thank you.
I have watched alot of van life videos and you have become one of my favorites. I like your quirkiness and your humbleness and your really beneficial and honest content. Keep it up and i will continue to watch. Safe travels Matt and have a Happy New Year.
Thank you, that was so thoughtful and insightful, you have a gift for writing and storytelling. Stay safe and wishing you the best in the New Year. ☮️❤️😎
Matt, Merry Christmas 🎄 from DFW, Texas. Thank you, thank you, thank you for everything. Your clips are authentic and enjoyable. Your words in this clip are calming and reassuring. There is no doubt that you are helpful to many. A natural gift giver with your clips. Thank God they will forever be posted bc in many cases they have to be watched 2 or 3 times just to capture missed intellectual humor or informative comments. Keep on keeping on. Be safe and Happy New Year.
Matt, You’re truly a philosopher regarding van life. Thanks for your testimony, it was enlighten. You mentioned skydiving in your 20’s. I guess you have always been an outlier in your life. In the Air Force we always said; “why jump out of a perfectly good airplane”. Lol Oh, FYI the best place to buy frozen chopped onions is Stop & Shop. I hope you stayed comfortable during the below zero temperatures we had this week. Take care and Merry Christmas.
Do you spend time in libraries? They offer many things needed for van life, such as bathrooms, A/C and heating during extreme weather, free WIFI, parking during the day, etc. Thanks for sharing your adventures with us.
Wow, that was amazing and from the heart! I may/probably won't even attempt it but I am always curious about other peoples lives and you are definitely a gifted thinker and clearly articulated what Van Life means/is/will be. Consider me subscribed!
I am hours from completing and moving in to my beloved Sprinter 170 high top 4 x 4❤ I consider her to be my nursing home and I'm going to hit the road and be a rolling snowbird😂😂 as I stand Here in My Sticks and Bricks that the renters will be moving into on the 1st of January I look at all the crap on the counter and in the dish drainer and shake my head and think how in F am I ever going to live in that small of a space😂😂 every time I go to the bathroom and sit on the toilet I look around and think to myself you're about to move into a space this size😂😂 have enjoyed your videos you've kept me company while painting and scraping and building and hammering and sanding😮 your demeanor is delightful and I wish you a happy Christmas and a merry New Year
Well first Merry Christmas! Just started watching your videos! I have to admit I definitely enjoy your adventures and how you look at Van Life. Keep doing your videos..there awesome! Also I just joined your Channel!Well you have me as a supporter and subscriber!😊 Rick Chisholm (Rick From Virginia)
Very nice writing! This information is so helpful to those of us considering getting out there and enjoying the road! Hope your 2025 is all that you want it to be.
Matt your amazing. You have so much tlant. I so have a question about emptying out yuur apt.. Do you have a video of your apt with all yuur stuff in it.. And video after you moved it?
Merry Christmas Matt, I wish I could give you a big hug Matt, that story was so heart warming and true I just sat here and was taken away to another world ,van world just like you. I know about how sky diving feels too,as I done that for my 50th Birthday ,was just how you described it.even though you are on the other side of the world Matt ,I class you as a true friend ,all the best for 2025,cheers David.😀🚐
When I did 'van life' for the first time I had been homeless. After graduating college I couldn't find work so it was tough. Moving into a vehicle was moving up.
I have property that is paid for and I have emotional attachment to it and peace among it. I'd like a van for travel. In one of your earlier videos you did a spreadsheet that showed how much you saved just on motels and such.
I say go for it, start on something real cheap and learn, then upgrade to what makes you happy. Best decision I ever made was building my tiny home trailer ✌️
Hey I love the color of the inside of your van, I would never change a thing. I appreciate that you read all the comments but don't ever let the comments influence you unless it's good information
Question: Does time go by faster or slower living this way? I would assume there may be a sense of time slowing down living this way which may be a good thing.
Yeh it slows down. Living in a small space takes away so much mindless stuff you gotta do and gives more time for moments you will remember forever. 1 hour to clean inside top to bottom compared to 3 hours or more with a regular house and that’s just one thing of many. That’s two hours right there you could be doing something much more important.
Agree with the other guy's answer, every day is much different than the one before and that alone makes you more mindful and makes time slow down. In my sticks and bricks lifestyle it seemed like weeks or months could drop off the calendar with nothing significant nor memorable happening. This is a very positive change.
Merry Christmas! I enjoyed listening to your story. You have a natural talent in writing and your voice especially in narration. Have you ever thought of getting a side job doing documentaries on top of the one you have on RUclips.
It is not the question if I go and do van life, it is the question when do I have the right amount of money with me. With that I mean, the money to build a sustainable van. 2) savings. I am not to worried about finding places to sleep or anything else. Van life is like normal life, only thing different is you don't know where you end at the end of the day. In the Netherlands, where I am from, you are allowed to stay on parking lots all over the place, next to this, you have all different apps like park4night, I,overlander etc. You only have to stay under the radar, meaning be silent don't attract any attention. Respect the neighbours you have at that time.
I can see you have given a lot of thought to this short novel about van living.. Anywho, I think that one really would not know the extent and reality of van living until you actually partake of it. It looks good on video or paper, but to actually do it is another thing. There is a lot to consider, but dont think too long about it. LIke Nike says, "Just Do It". I guess its all just about peace of mind and money too. HOpe your Christmas is absolutely fantastic. and your New Year is as well. .Peace 🌲
Living my van dwelling dream through you.❤ Merry Holidays If you ever wander east you’ll get some great steamers and Lobstah on me. The other Cape (Gloucester) is calling. Can’t get all messy shucking in the van can you?
I don’t need to imagine where my bed is…I sleep in my van on my bed every night. 😂😂 I have a medium roof long wheel base (MRLW) Ford Transit. I’m dedicated to the lifestyle. I don’t regret living in my van for the past three years.
❤ I wish I could get my family to listen to this video❤ they think I'm nuts😂 it's taking me two years to complete the build out and my beloved van is only got 4,000 Mi on her😮 you just put into words most of the things that I thought considered a new I would feel so much so that you brought me to tears🎉🎉 I don't ever see myself having a RUclips channel as I would never be one to edit anything😂😂 I'm one of those take me as I am kind of people notice that love me do so for my straightforward outgoing personality and those who dislike me do so for the same reason😮 I realize now I'm going to be boondocking in my own town for probably a week taking care of loose ends🎉🎉 I'm going to hit replay and try not to cry this time😅 but in the ending I'd like to suggest that not only are you a good writer but you have the kind of voice that would be great as someone who reads books on tapes or narrates cuz you know Mike Rowe he'd probably be happy to take a nudge from somebody like you❤😂❤
Some people will never get it, but those are the same people who are afraid to stand out, take risks, and be nonconformists. History doesn't build statues to such people.
The necessity of a 3rd place is almost a requirement for a happy VanLife. The difficulty is forming connections there. I’ve heard that the disappearance of the 3rd place is a huge problem in our society now. It would be nice to have a place where everyone knows your name. Cheers! This felt like "‘twas the night before Christmas and all through the van"❤ Don’t forget to leave out the milk and cookies. PS: I’m dedicating "Underneath the radar " buy Underworld to you as a Christmas gift 🎉
Good thing about the van is you can drive around a greater distance and find these third places, and keep track of them just like you do sleeping spots.
Some of the smartest people live in vans..you are one of them..l like that you notice how many meals you have in restaurants...l would be buying too many coffees ...thou l have just given up those vegan milks which are full of toxic stuff..so maybe l would be safe...l love your advice..you are one of the best vanlifers
Some post offices offer a real address now. Mine does. Been some kind of nomad my whole life and now 54. If you have any type of vehicle use that. Need to be financially responsible. Most folks are forced into this lifestyle which makes it much more difficult. I spent like a drunken sailor in my 20s. Then lived in a offgrid cabin in the woods part of my 30s. That is where I learned to save for my retirement. Now I have a property in NC that I can use for a homebase. Put a well and had electric hooked up. Taxes are low so like renting a storage locker each month. If you are into communal living a property could be shared if everyone does something to contribute to it.
I do tiny home trailer life. It seemed like the best way to go for people with a lower budget. I can live mobile quite similar with my truck or have it parked on my farm rental spot and drive the car. I’ll probably upgrade down the road or just build more and keep this rig as well.
Tine Homes are a great solution, unfortunately here in MA are effectively outlawing them by zoning mandatory minimum sizes for houses. Really crappy situation.
I still feel like everyone should research how to slide over to vanlife, even if they don't primarily want to do it. Life can change very quickly against your will. I'm very happy that I have a plan B and C if the worst comes to pass to my primary lifestyle.
You always need a plan b and a plan c for everything, but trial and error is the best way to learn anything. Failing and knowing what to do better next time. School of hard knocks!
I don’t usually comment on videos, but you’ve gotta let that comment go. It was a meaningless comment and no one is thinking about it but you. Great videos. Merry Christmas.
Merry Christmas, your videos have been my favorite for 2024. I'm 53 and hearing you quote Michael Landon made me smile.
HalfPint!!
I think you’re probably the most unique van lifers out there. I totally enjoy your odd, quirky, well thought out content.
Thanks Christine!
I love how you really think about everything. Your videos are very helpful
Thanks my man, I'm keeping my eye on your channel as well, good luck in 2025!

Sometimes, mostly for the rental spaces for zoom calls
Merry Christmas Matt, that was enjoyable to hear your thoughts on Van life. Truthful and encouraging.🙋🏼♀️

Another great video, vanlife from oregon saying hello 👋
Would love to live in that part of the country! I'll take it for the mild winters alone, but so many great landscapes out there!
You are a poet on wheels. Thank you for the angles of reflection. Merry Christmas! PS - how did the interview go?

Thanks David! Have a great New Year and congrats and checking skydiving off your bucket list!
A vanlife book in the works it seems 😊👍🏻
When I did 'van life' for the first time I had been homeless. After graduating college I couldn't find work so it was tough. Moving into a vehicle was moving up.

Go for it! Traveling by camper van is utter bliss even if you're not fully committed to living in it
@@undertheradarvan I like the idea of a camper on my truck. Totally no good for your way of going though. It would be stealthless.
Hey I love the color of the inside of your van, I would never change a thing. I appreciate that you read all the comments but don't ever let the comments influence you unless it's good information
Red is the best color by far!
Merry Christmas! I enjoyed listening to your story. You have a natural talent in writing and your voice especially in narration. Have you ever thought of getting a side job doing documentaries on top of the one you have on RUclips.
I have not! Interesting idea though!

This Dude is multi-talented. (That said, I am mystified how a Millennial hand wrote a book-I guess he doesn't have a printer in the Death Star.)
hey jack kerouac. would be cool to head out to lowell and see if you can park by his house.
The Lowell Jack Kerouac Fall Festival is normally in October. Check it out when it gets closer.
Well done. Happy Holidays….

Thanks Bro! Might take you up on that offer soon!
And if you are socially awkward, you will be forced to overcome it. Gud Jula!
A little bit of Thoreau in your writing.
I modeled my van layout after his cabin hence the lengthwise bed!
I don’t need to imagine where my bed is…I sleep in my van on my bed every night. 😂😂
I have a medium roof long wheel base (MRLW) Ford Transit.
I’m dedicated to the lifestyle. I don’t regret living in my van for the past three years.
Get it!!!
Great video.
Thanks

I liked NC a lot, that's a big possibility if I ever look to buy land.
@ they don’t want us to bypass their system, which keeps them on top and us on the bottom.
Hey Matt, met you in Delaware SP. Did you ever land an Insta 360 camera?
Hey Tim yeah I remember you! Not yet, will get one come spring when I can take the kayak back out.
@ Very Good! I’ve been thinking about Mobi Dick myself. Hope Oru has a spring sale. You’re doing great…enjoying the vids.

Aloha Matt - Mele Kalikimaka 🏝️
Thanks Island Girl!
👍
😎
don't encourage others. i don't wanna run out of places to sleep.
Honestly, it is only rat race addicted homeless in a van types that want to sleep parked on city streets or in big box parking lots like this guy.
Real good advise for wanna' be's !
👍 Rock on 🙂.
