What's neat is seeing these guys moving quite well and throwing punches in bunches. Today's heavies are lumbering and, except for the most experienced, not well schooled. Also, these guys are treating each other with respect.
Love the respect shown by Patterson and quarry to each other after the fight.both fighters had a lot class and integrity you don't see that in evidence in these times.

I am a Jerry Quarry fan. But Jerry faded pretty bad in the latter part of the fight. By gollies That fight should've been for Patterson. At least a draw. Those 2 knockdowns are what gave Quarry the W.

Both Patterson and Jerry Quarry would be small cruiser weights if they were around today. There was no cruiser weight then it went from 178 light heavyweight right to heavyweight
I heard Quarry was a big part of why the cruiserweight division was created. He fought at the cruiserweight limit much later in his career but his head had already been smashed by Ali, Frazier and Norton
@@fanteshyfilms4645 true, Ali was just too big and long for Quarry, huge reach advantage (also far more skilled, take nothig away from Ali), and Ken Norton was too big for him too. him and Patterson would be cruiserweights today

Not that it really matters (both men were excellent boxers in their respective primes), but it seems pretty clear to me that Quarry was about an inch taller than Patterson, yet both are listed to this day as six-footers. So either Patterson's height was rounded up, or Quarry's was rounded down. (Or perhaps a little of both.)
Patterson fought out of a crouch and constantly had his back and knees slightly bent. His stance was also wide and Quarrys was more centered . It can seem that someone is smaller because of those things when they really arent.
@@FirstLast-vl1uy Another example is Ali and Foreman. When they met at the center of the ring, both standing upright, Foreman clearly had an inch on Ali, yet both were listed at the same height.
@@SingleTax I see what your saying but its difficult to see one inch in difference especially on older tapes of fights. both fighters are almost never at a level angle with the camera so its impossible to really judge hight. I think that the judges were hard with Quarry, considering the two knock-downs.If Quarry didn't win,it was because he missed agressivity and looking at the wars he made later against Frazier,Norton,Lyle and many others,it's very hard to believe!
There's a point in Norton fight where he could've possibly knocked out Norton but the referee intervened which led to a quick recovery and then a bounce back by Norton where he gets the fight stopped. Quarry was very talented, he never dodged anyone
Frédéric Avalli Lol He's a professional boxer; that takes pure will and talent alone. Yes, they do move better than today's heavies, but you have to remember, they weight about 50 lbs. on average less than today's heavyweights. It's literally a different weight class now that it was then with a few exceptions.
Sharp counter punching from both guys. Floyd’s hand speed is tremendous and Jerry really commits on those slashing lefts downstairs and chopping rights. I m not sure Evander Holyfield could have beaten these guys or Jimmy Ellis in a twelve rounder.
Another booboo by Cosell at the end of the fight.....called it a "Split Decision"...it wasn't. One judge scored the fight "even", and the other two scored the fight 7-5 for Quarry....That's a Majority Decision.
