- Limpkins have been showing up far out of their range to the delight of birders throughout the United States. When one showed up in Milwaukee I made the trip to see if I could find it.

We just had our state first Limpkin in Colorado this summer! Hot Limpkin summer!
Yeah I saw it too!
Thank you for the adventure, Derek.
We had one in western Upstate NY late last year, a state 1st record. Happily feeding on snails when I saw it. It was subsequently captured by a wildlife rehabber just before a major snowstorm hit & transported to the Carolinas and released. Very cool bird! Glad one showed up in your state!
Definitely the limpkin! Thanks!
Super cool! We have a pair here in San Antonio. They've caused quite a stir in the birding community !
I’ve gotten great looks at the pair myself! They were a must see
Saw one Sept. 14 in a stream by the Glacial Drumlin trail between Cottage Grove and Deerfield, WI. The noise made by the ancient bridge, and the close proximity of people did not seem to disturb it.
Saw one in Tulsa last year. Some came back this year periodically. There may be one right now at Oxley Nature Center.
My favorite is the Limpkin as it was always a Florida bird prior to recently. To have seen that bird in Wisconsin is unreal! Good job as always man.
A limpkin showed up a few weeks ago just outside of Richmond, Virginia. It has been feasting on freshwater mussels and hanging out at a nearby lake. Naturally, all the local birders turned out with their cameras and binoculars.
Dang wish I had found this video sooner. I live close by!
congratulations on your lifer, i was very fortunate to have photographed 3 of these birds this year in wisconsin....very cool bird
All the birds where my favorite, thanks for sharing ❤️😊🐦 5:25
I was able to add limpkin to my list this summer. It was found in a wetland near our home here in Ontario, Canada. We live about 1 hour north of Toronto.
There's 2 here in Northern Illinois also. McHenry County and Chicago Botanical gardens.
Very cool to see one in person!
Late last year I was able to see one in my hometown of Lewiston, NY. It seems to have been feeding on Cepaea snail species (which are not native). It was ultimately captured and removed to Florida. That said, I'm sure you get them at times, but if you are desperate to see Little Gull, Lewiston is perhaps the best place on the continent for that species.
How amazing! I've seen them at the St. Marks River in Florida ages ago. We took a boat down the river and were rewarded with several. I'd be more than a little excited to see one here in CA...Dream BIG. I'm so happy to see them traveling.
Here in central Florida, we take Limpkins for granted. Most lake and river banks are littered with apple snail remains too.
Central Florida got blessed with Flamingos recently.
Waiting for a Rhode Island sighting. A Roseate Spoonbill did pay us a visit.
Missed out on this bird by a week :(. Had a hotel room across the river a week before it showed up haha. At least we got to see a Hooded Warbler & Philadelphia Vireo on our trip out there!
Very neat, great sightings. Do you think it's a good thing for birds like the Limpkin to be moving so far north, or is it a bad sign?
I think it’s just situational. Their food is moving so they are as well. I do hope they leave before winter. I doubt they would fair too well in the cold but it’s hard to say!
That was an awesome video, Derek! I have never seen a Limpkin before - what an amazing and unusual bird! God bless you!
Very cool!
Excellent vid. Thank you! Neat to see the Robin going aquatic!!
There have been multiple in Ohio for the last few months. Nice video!
Derek as you saw this limpkin was it eating a apple snail as far as my favorite bird it's got to be the downy woodpecker .
As far as I know the Apple Snails haven’t made it to WI, but we do have other large invasive snails such as the Chinese Mystery Snail. And the Downy is adorable!
Glad you had the chance to see it, Derek. I wen't looking for it in that exact spot on Monday, September 11th, but had no luck. I believe I heard it had moved over to the Wehr Nature Center, and now I see people have been reporting one in Waupaca. I also tried seeing it when it was at Horicon a couple months back, but again, no luck. I wonder how many were actually in the state vs the same couple moving around from county to county? Thanks for sharing your experience!
Yeah! Hard to say how many there actually are!
I’ve heard stories about those birds from Florida. Supposedly their call has made some people think that a person was being attacked. Never seen a limpkin before but I think it’s interesting that they have come this far north. I’m from Michigan my self. Michigan is a great state for birding. Have you guys ever thought about taking a trip to Seney looking for the yellow rail? That would be a cool video
That's pretty crazy! Great video ~ thank you! I'll try to comment more often to help your channel. 😊🐦
Thanks!
I have seen a limpkin near Orlando, Florida. Their call is quite spooky.
Joachim!
I saw one here in CO this summer, crazy!
Their call sounds like someone is touching them inappropriately lmao
We've been photographing Limpkins here in Lexington, Ky for about a month now.
I see these nearly everyday on my Miami campus lol.
Nice video
They’re being photographed regularly in Arkansas. From what I understand the climate has allowed the species to expand it’s range within in the past decade.
It’s the movement and range expansion of their food source as opposed to climate that’s allowed them to expand
@@BadgerlandBirding what has allowed the food to expand? 🐌

👍
We have three Limpkins here in St.Louis, I saw one on July 31st. How is the invalid traffic thing going?
Nice! And not great 😂 check out the post on the community tab.
Responsibilities < Limpkin
💯
Perhaps you should contact a local bird rehab agency so the Limpkin can be captured and returned to the Southern U.S. before Winter.
It’s actually been a trend in recent years that they come up here in summer and late fall then leave before winter. Hopefully they end up in a warmer climate!
Just nabbed LUWA and PROW in the same tree in SF today
Solid!
You missed a mustelid running behind you at the end of the video. I am Scottish, to me it looked like a stoat, but may have been some American Mustela.
5:30 and it might be a least weasel looking again.
You guys talking about the Eastern Chipmunk?
@@BadgerlandBirding Probably, we don't have chipmunks in Scotland so it looked more like a mustelid to me. Our squirrels are the invasive Grey and the native Eurasian Red, both typical bushy tailed tree squirrels.
These weirdos are popping up everywhere. If you had asked me 5 years ago what species would be next to undergo a range expansion, limpkins would have been last on my list.
Pole shift
We are at... THE END GAME... only those who are worthy and witnessed will make it to the other side including myself... let me be judged first gods and goddesses and Mother Earth! Please!
Only those who accept Jesus as their Savior will make it to heaven. Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth and the life, no man [or woman] comes unto the Father [in heaven] but by me." Jesus is the only way to heaven because he is the only one who has ever been on this earth who was perfect and holy and laid down his own life willingly for the sins of the entire world! This was necessary because we are all sinners since the fall of Adam and Eve (take a look at the Ten Commandments and see how many you've broken), and God CANNOT be in the presence of sin. So, Jesus paid the price for our sin debt through His torturous death and all we have to do to be completely ASSURED of going to heaven is to recognize that we are a sinner and accept Jesus and what He did for us in our hearts. Then we are saved and sealed for heaven no matter what! What a gift indeed!
The rapture of believers is going to happen very, very soon, when we will go to meet Jesus in the clouds (1 Thessalonians 4:16-17) and be with Him forever! Do not believe the lies they will tell you that we were abducted by aliens or some other nonsense! The rapture is God's rescue plan to save believers from the soon coming 7 year tribulation- the most terrible time ever on the earth where billions will die. (READ REVELATION chapters 6-19 to learn the truth).
Please don't wait to accept Jesus! You do NOT want to be left behind! He loves you so much He died for you and would have died for you if you were the only person on earth!
