I remembered when the story was on canvas, there was a bonus episode and the creator explained the metaphor:
They explained that the metaphor is fear. Everyone had their own fear, like the ladder. And no one can teach how to concur it. And once people concurred their fear, they're not the same anymore. And some fears can drive a person a little crazy, like how some children can't sleep at night cause their fear of the dark.
Yes some people don't think fear exists, like how parents tries to help their children get over their fears growing up. While others think fear is part of life, like a landscape.
There are rumors, facts, and scientific explanations about fear. And there you go, that's the medaphor of the story, you're welcome and thank you for listening and have a nice day.
Thats deep man, when i read it i think it was a methaphor of everyones life because the man whit heatphones jabe a leader straight because he know what he whis to do in his life, the kid see him a little distortes because he is still to new in life and the old man see him like is falling down because his time is already ending, etc.
@Box Hobo whoops, sorry my bad
Have a nice day as well
Thank you
Thank you for this TED Talk.
People are afraid of the ladder because they are scared it’ll change them.
I'm afraid that I'll die trying
i feel like the ladder sorta symbolizes life and it's challenges and when your done with doing one thing, the ladder will change into another thing/challenge. since everyones different and and has different lives thats why the ladder is different. people are scared to change after theyre done climbing the ladder, but what they dont know is that they wont turn into an unrecognizable version of themselves, they just need to take the courage and after theyre done climbing they will have better grown and become more wise, knowing how to deal with curveballs life throws at you.
@@Emu- i felt that.
@@koz2178 Your right, but one question, would YOU climb your own ladder?
@@someperson6672 good question. if i knew that i should climb it then i would. it would be hard but i probably would.
Thanks Webtoon for the opportunity to animate Kotopopi & Kibbitzer's original story. We hope everyone enjoys it and be sure to check out our own channel for more content from Rooster Teeth!

For the records: my name is 'Kotopopi', same goes for the credits in the video 😅
Yes!!! Can wait to see what next?
@Kotopopi Webcomics Sorry about that 😱
Yo rooster thanks for doing this
The ladder is a journey. You start at the same place, yet the ladder is different to the person. Those who don't come back, don't need to return. Those who change, grew wise. Those who climb, have courage and strength to face the challenge.
Cyanide & happiness
That's deep.
Man I just wanted to watch a RUclips video I didn't expect this to be oddly wholesome and deep
MAN THE ANIMATION IS SO SMOOTHHHHHHHH AND EVEN THOUGH ITS LABELED “SHORTS” ITS STILL A LONG FILM THAT MUST’VE TAKEN WEEKS. THIS IS JUST SO COOL.
IKR! I love how it’s telling us that everyone has their own life and how everyone’s life is different just like the ladder.
Ikr so fkn amazing
i think it took a month
i think it took a month
@@elly008 i rhink it ook a month
Neat little symbolism about life and how it's different for everyone. Even the part about the ladder being the only thing around, you won't find anything if you just stay in the same place. You have to keep moving forward regardless of how tough it seems
I thought of it as improvement because of the 3 facts
1) it leads to insanity: people might think that change might be insane and just sit and contemplate changing( i.e. sit and look at the ladder)
2) the people who climb it never come back down: not many people who improve want to go back to there old ways
3) the people who do are never the same: when they fallback into old habbits they might not have been the same person they were when they first got out of them
To apply this I'll use smocking as an example
1) smokers might think it would be crazy to quit because how else would they call there nerves
2) if they are able to get a supportive friend group and live a less stressful life, they might never want to go back
3) those that do go back into smoking might have lost others and might be much sadder than they were when they first started
@@matthewflugstad8023 I was actually thinking how cool it was that the plot went from the climber girl go from wise to arrogant to continue the progression. I saw the ladder as life path wisdom at first, but when she said "look around, the ladder is all there is!" she was invalidating that these people had their lives, homes, families... the ladder isn't all there is. So maybe she has an obsession with success and fame.
So now dude in the headphones is on his way up to challenge this ideology. And her ideology.
This story has me excited, what a truly great toon
@@SpyralStormTeacup Oh damn, now I really want to see where this goes

I just realized how diverse each character's walk of life is. Be they rich (Cigarette man) or poor (Waitress), young (Little Boy) or old (Elderly Man), male (Headphones guy) or female (Bernice), anyone can climb the ladder.
I seriously hope that Heart Anthology and Brain Anthology become all animated series!!
Edit: WEBTOON please make a Melanin or To Each Their Own Demon animations those are my favorite stories!!
I want to see wilderwood and lucid Lucy as short films!

I feel like this is a variation of "Infinity Train": a strange, mysterious thing that will either change you for the better or the worse, different people from different walks of life can get on it, and you ultimately have to figure it out for yourself.
and that girl who climbed the ladder really looks like grace from infinity train
ALSO! Both the train and the latter are the only things you see in a big barren desert. There's nothing else we ever see except the latter and the train in the desert, and the people who go on the journey on them.
Omg I immediately thought of Infinity Train while watching this, it just feels the same.
I love how this short story tells us how everyone’s life is different, some people have to go through more obstacles than others. I also like how it’s telling you to never be afraid to what life has to offer. Thank you so much for turning this story to an animated short clip.
I love how this story ,it show us how every person's life is different with their own perspective and challenges, we never know what future holds as some people never leaves their shells, some take risks and achieve it and some get stuck in the middle of their journey, So, try climbing your own ladder ,its depends upon you whether you come back to your past self again or leaves your past self for the better future, cause people changes.
This submission didn’t creep me out at all..
It's more like a twilight zone episode, it didn't freak you out with gore or monsters but with the human condition and psychology
@@matthewflugstad8023 I’m still trying to figure out where they are and if it’s near any city or town. that kid rode there by scooter and the headphone dude was just randomly wondering!
@@flairr7743 I think the wastland is meant to be rock bottom for one reason or another, the kid said that his dad doesn't believe in the ladder(change) and the mother believes it's a natural part of the landscape but hasn't climbed it (believes change is natural but never tries to change herself) as for the guy with the headphones, like I said, it's improvement, not getting over bad habbits, we all can improve maybe his is being empathetic because he just comes across the ladder by shear happenstance and is just walking by with his headphone on (tuning out the world), the girl might be a waitress at a cafe she hates, the kid I'm not sure of but he might be unpopular or his friend group is toxic and the guy in the suit is a smoker
It wasn’t supposed to. It’s part of the Brain anthology, which is supposed to make you think about the stories. And that’s what this story does, makes you think about what the ladder represents
@@ebony_death like something like the twilight zone does
When I close my eyes and picture my own ladder it’s made of oak wood. It extends from the bottom as straight and sturdy as a tree trunk; however; it starts branching off into many confusing pathways further on up. I can’t see where they lead or know which branch is the best to follow. I want to climb my ladder but it looks so complicated and intimidating when I look up at it. Someday, I tell myself, I will climb it and choose a path.
Thank you so much for writing and animating this story! I find it different than the usual stories out there, but it’s still impactful. I wish all those out there, who have their own ladders to climb, the best.
Mine is somhow like a Rainbow. Colorful and straight, but i dont see the rungs. And i don't know where i should plase my hand and feet
My ladder separates and keeps twisting turning and double backing on itself. It seems as if you'll never reach the top. But there is gold at the top of the clouds.
I imagine mine being covered in vines, and those vines look like they're the only thing holding together the rusty metal underneath. There's a bunch of small animals and big bugs on it, some of them are nice and go with me on the journey and even help me, while others are little enemies and obstacles that make the journey harder.
For me, the ladder is a journey of a life you’ve had so far. The higher you get, the more things you see, such as mistakes in your past, or childhood trauma. The objective: keep climbing up, don’t look back, keep moving forward. And eventually as you come closer and closer to your present life, something happens, and you’re back where you started. The ladder drives you insane because of things that have happened to you, but you never come back the same, because you’ve moved on and learned things about yourself.
And then there’s that wonderful question:
Are you willing to climb it?
Love your theory but it has been confirmed the ladder is fear
@@hart1027 Ohhh okay. I didn’t read the comic so I didn’t know. Still, I guess everyone can interpret differently. Thanks for telling me!
Omg are we going to have animated shorts of all the stories??
I think only the 2 winners (this one and the monster one) are going to be made into shorts :p
But I’d love to see more animated!
God I hope so
OMG This got animated!!! I loved this one Brain Anthology short story and cried many times over about it! Then I shared the dang thing with my friends and we had a blast deciphering what it meant and how we can learn from this story! I don't know if you're reading this author, but we loved it very much! Keep up the good work!
Both my dad and I love this story because it has very deep meaning to it, as the ladder is your life, it might be long, it might be short, it might be straight forward or it might be broken, all you know is that it's your life, your ladder and it's your choice to climb it or not.
But we go through life whether we want it or not. Here, characters of all different ages come here, none but one of them had climbed it before... and you can choose to climb it multiple times, or none at all... are the ones that chose to turn away choosing not to go through life? what would that mean?
man i remember reading this back when it was an entry for the contest. kotopopi is a wonderful author
This Ladders looks like DNA
Other people: *theorizing about the meaning of the ladder*
Me: I ain’t touching that thing! I'm afraid of heights
Ironic
Well, your ladder is the only thing there is. Nothing else to do around here except climb it, no matter how scary or never-ending it appears.
The ladder is leading to a person's dream or is simply a way to their goal. For example the old man's ladder is broken, since he's to old to achieve anything in his life anymore.
the way this made me re-think to quit my toxic job in this pandemic and just see what happens if i take that risk is not funny. hahahaha.
Do it

Every time I watch this, something new sticks out to me. This time it was that the kid considered climbing the ladder, but only with friends. This is how a lot of kids & teenagers approach life. we often have people accompany us in our challenges, but it's when we get to be older that we are given more options in hobbies, classes, beliefs, and there isn't a vague mass of the general population anymore. I'm thinking in school and stuff, people from friend groups start taking different classes than each other, people have individual things they like to do. My whole life I've been just younger enough than my brothers to be in different age groups than them, so doing stuff isolated comes pretty easy to me, and I've realized that people who take classes and enjoy hobbies based on what they like, regardless of if anyone they know will be with them, are a lot happier in their choices. Maybe that kid only wants to climb the ladder accompanied, but ultimately that is impossible, and there will come a time where everyone has to step up to their ladder alone, or always be stuck following someone else. Stuck climbing behind someone, on a path they cannot see.

Before Discover, it was called Challenge League back in 2014. I am so happy webtoons got this far
The different ladder by different person perspective is reminding of infinity train where they have to realize to learn from their mistakes
I know its not the original message the author had in mind but my first thoughts after I read the comic was that the ladder represented the meaning of life. Eventually everyone in their life knows and recognizes it. Sometimes it leads to diffrent paths then others and sometimes denial and belief come from personal experience of climbing. Sometimes it’s even more complex, you can’t explain it because it’s different for everyone. Maybe other things are thrown into the meaning of the ladder as well, like your dreams and fears. But i feel like that would make it even more true because those are just parts of life everyone goes through.
this film has stuck with me for years, i still find myself asking myself,, “look around you, do you see anything else? the ladder is all there is!”
“look around you, do you see anything else? the ladder is all there is!” it’s been years and that quote has stuck with me
THE VOICE ACTING THE ANIMATION YOU GUYS ARE AMAZING
Why this reminds me of Plato's Cave? I'm weird.

Another one of the great stories. This anthology was one of the best ❤️
I feel like the ladder is a metaphor for something

This is a short story yet it is meaningful.
It refers to each persons destiny, It can lead to a lot of paths!
I feel like this film should win the

This webtoon has such a deep moral. Everyone is facing their own obstacles and no matter how you choose to face those obstacles, your never alone.
I think the ladder is a metaphor for the path we take in life. Like each person has a different path they go down.
Yeah, it`s not hard for her to climp the ladder. It`s hard not to insult people that have done nothing to her and just scared by unknown. Maybe at first time she was scared too. But look at her now! How inspiring and rude!
If you don't face your fears and problems you'll be stuck at that same place in life . You need to let go and be strong because no one can make you happy other than yourself . This animated flim actually has so much meaning in it that some won't understand .
this is my favorite brain anthology webtoon! it's so good :')
I love this short, and I come back to it a lot. The only thing I don’t agree with tho, is that the ladder is all there is. You don’t have to climb the ladder to find happiness and your purpose. I’m the kind of person with a lack of motivation and have never set super high goals for my future but that’s just who I am, and there’s nothing wrong with that.
Dude, Webtoon, please keep these coming, I am loving all fo these short animation Films so freaking much, like its unbealivable how good these are Hol Crap
This webcomic actually translates perfectly into an animation. Although I admit, I would have loved to have seen Red Dart as an animated short. That would have been wild!
The ladder represents challenges/problems in life, different people have different ladders, and it is a part of life, problems & challenges strengthen us.They said “when you came back”, it means you are not the old you now,you are stronger than before.
WHY DOESN'T THIS VIDEO HAVE MORE VIEWS! THIS VIDEO IS PHENOMENAL!!!

might sound weird but i love ladders. i always love climbing it and checkin it out, atleast going out there and looking will fetch you some answers than simply staring and analysing perpetually.
No wonder this won, it's a masterpiece.
The voices fit well and the animation is nice, good job Webtoon!
This animation is amazing omg
Animation is so smooth. I love the characters design and everything they are doing or saying is so realistic
I see the meaning of this. The ladder represents life and moving on when you climb it. You have to accept change because it is a part of life and change isn’t always bad. Sometimes the latter will not be straight and be split. That represents it being a hard time to change who you are. We need to move on in life and accept changes and enjoy good times that we once had instead of making it worse than it could be.
I realize that this is wrong and the metaphor is fear. But yes you should also take my advice and move on through tough times.
I personally think that it’s way creepier as a comic, but I love the animation
