One thing I like about Luna's coloring is that it's a warm yellow gray. Gray actually comes is a ton of colors and shades. There are purple grays, blue grays, green grays. Gray is way more diverse than people give credit.
Shanelle was the one that officially had me sold on the Rainbow High/Shadow High dolls. Then the newer generation of shadow high dolls came and they slowly started falling off for me. The pastel colors that they're doing now makes me feel as if they're trying too hard to appeal to the Monster High fandom instead of being it's own thing.
Her and the white one(can't remember her name) are the best usese of the concept to me. I think the other characters being completely grey makes them feel more washed out and less interesting

It makes sense to an extent, because they are marketing towards kids and not adults. And I was a kid in the early 2000s and I barely know anything about Paris Hilton, like, she was fading out as far as I know? I just knew she was famous and that's about it. So I can't imagine any of the kids watching Rainbow High would even know Paris Hilton was a real celebrity.

The gap feels like the shows Boy Meets World and Girl Meets World(his daughters show continuation). The target audience of GMW didn't know that the father and adults were from the original BMW and just thought they were random celebrities. I was older for the target audience of GmW, and my cousins and I didn't know about BMW.
As a goth, shadow high was the most confusing thing ever because I LOVE monotone stuff but none of the dolls really stood out to me (except the one with the dress that looked kinda like a rose). Then I realised (after messing around on the sims) that they need an assigned colour that's sprinkled in, because it POPS. idk why but its so much more pleasing to look at. Using a lot of custom content, I created a sim (called Mono Stone because I think I'm funny) with grey skin and mainly black and white clothes, but each of her looks has a dash of colour - even if it's just red jewellery or makeup. I also have a version of her where she has coiled minty green hair (cos snakes, stone, medusa, you get the idea) which makes her that bit more interesting to look at when she's in completely back and white outfits. Aesthetically, she's probably my favourite sim and I had a lot of fun making her. By comparison, the SH dolls just don't quite do it for me, which is sad because I adore the alt aesthetic they carry
I know what you mean, I have ocs who uses black but when I'm making their designs I always put some color because black on black makes them so background that no one would remember who they are.
My issue with them is that they all have just 1 coloring thing that I despise. The twins are great, too bad the doll hair has like muted rainbow in it. Shanelle Onyx is almost perfect except for the skirt. Other than that the dolls seem to deliver both too little and too much.
I like Shadow High's concept and aesthetic, but I wish it had more lore and better execution. My favorite SH/RH characters are the Storm Twins, and I loved their aesthetic and color scheme enough to pay full price for their dolls. I find it ironic how I hesitate to buy most MH Gen 3 reboot dolls, yet was prerfectly willing to drop around $70 dollars on the Storm Twins dolls literally two weeks after their dolls were first released. They are just that aestheticly perfect to me and I can't help but love them a bit more than every other SH/RH doll in my collection. Also, Veronica Storm is best girl and nobody will convince me otherwise. I have also quoted Veronica and Naomi for the fun of it more times than I would like to admit.
I think the twins are alot more aesthetically pleasing because they actually have a pop of colour. They stand out and don't just blend into the grewscale of the other dolls
I would just watch a 20 minute video of you two at target. It gives me the same vibe of going target at 11 at night with friends who are way too tired to get cheese puffs you don't really need but you want some sort of food to throw into eachother's mouths while you watch the first Pirates of The Caribbean movie for the 3rd time

Shadow High is literally the only reason I started collecting rainbow high. I have a few rainbow high dolls, but the greyscale and monochrome are so refreshing to see in dolls! Funnily enough though, my young nieces aren’t super big fans

They had powers of prophecy and the happy preppy girl only saw horrible, terrible things and the grouchy goth girl only saw happy, amazing things. I've always felt they purposefully chose their personalities to rebel against the emotions they are essentially forced to feel.

Repo genetic opera is honestly the only thing I could think of her having been in. As a too-young-to-be-watching-that kid when I first saw the movie, I assumed she was barely even acting and was just being more herself. So apparently I never had a good impression of her. I'm sure she's decently a human and does human things and has human emotions, but child me didn't really like her and I still trust a lot of what child me dis/liked. I think the only other exposure I had towards her was the south park episodes that had her character in it. I highly doubt they had her voice it, though.

People love to hate on her, but she took an unfair, exploitative situation and a shallow public perception of who she is and turned herself into a real business woman.
My partner got the uma doll and yeah, you did get one of the "bad batches" because hers didn't have the hair as crunchy as you described (only at the end,) and her nails were perfect. She didn't even have accessories falling off
I actually really really like the full black and white stuff… to a point. I think those dolls look better overall and like the aesthetic more- but you are right about it needing just- a little bit of color. And it only needs to be a touch, some red eye shadow and red jewels on the jewelry, some sort of accent color that you can just sprinkle in there to make a statement and make it more unique. I also think they should really utilize more metal type colors, I mean you have steel grey, silver, White gold, it would look amazing. Also with the black and white, as someone who draws and thus, also works with color theory, the pure black and white would look 10000% better with some undertones. Just that cool tone grey vs. warm tone grey, blue-black and purple-black, it will stand out more, pop off of the background, look more visually interesting, and add some color and characterization to each doll without sacrificing the pure black and white aesthetic. It’s subtle but it matters
I thought s3 wasn't as good as the other two because of the lack of our OG characters. We have the biggest plot in rainbowvision but with all these characters it leaves little to no room for our OG girls to shine, especially in later episodes Yes I want Part 2
But they had the first season all to themselves tho..Idk maybe it's just me but I get bored when they center an episode around one of the OGs nowadays because I feel like we've already seen all there is to be seen about them. And half of them have the same face and hairstyle, they're not even interesting to the eye.

And even with the new characters they're not getting the focus they need. Georgia.... *pftttt* .... gone after the play in s2. With such an influx of characters now the story just jumps around whoever they want without any true flow. At least when we were focusing on our OG girls.... we were with our OG girls. A coherent story around them & their development. Now it's rainbowvision but again, they jump around to different characters without finishing off each storyline. Like... um... what happened to Luna???? You know.... we can't see her & sunny talk to each other? They're twin sisters for crying out loud. And Pacific coast? Just 1 episode and bam ... the story just immediately shifts to shadow high. Also not to mention the EXTREME wait time between episodes. We had to wait 4 weeks for ep9 and if that wasn't bad enough, we waited a whopping *7 WEEKS* for the latest one. And what was the latest episode? Just a few full performances for the semi finals with barely any storyline and most characters MIA. I still like the show nonetheless, I'm just saying why I don't feel enthusiastic for newer episodes than before.

Obviously, just my experience, but the shadow high doll I got (Nicole Steel) was actually really good quality, at least in comparison to what I’ve seen in different review videos. The only thing I’d say is ‘bad’ is that her hair keeps coming out of the elastics but I’ve just… accepted that now I guess. I do really like the black and white of the dolls, and the announcement of the shadow high dolls was what actually got me into rainbow high and doll collecting in general! :D

I think this season started really strong but they've been dragging out this competition plot so much they lost my attention, I can't wait for Rainbow Vision to end already so we can get into a different arc. About the dolls, I do like SH a lot. I don't think they need color to have flavor, their faces are gorgeous and their style is cool. I specially love the Neon Shadow line tho, they're probably my favorite dolls from this brand due to their punk aesthetic but I haven't found them in stores in my country yet :(

I love the black& white aesthetic personally, but how much variety can you really have without it all blending together. Very true. Uma is beautiful and unlike any other doll. They swept Pacific Coast High under the rug because they discontinued the doll line. Didn't meet the expected sales. Imo they should have released the dolls after they released the episode about the reality show.
I like the look of the dolls, especially Heather Grayson. She has the snake print clothes and the split color hair. But I haven't bought any of the dolls. I bought all the new monster high dolls though. 😅
The only standard Shadow High I've picked up so far are Shanelle and Natasha, I like the pure black and pure white and think they both look great and unique in my collection. On the other hand, I've considered picking up Nicole and Luna a ton of times but their grey on grey on grey just doesn't appeal as much to me.

Veteran of the Rainbow High fandom here! I would recommend sending in a warranty claim for Uma's hands, because that should not be happening. If that doesn't work, you could always try buying them second-hand or from Aliexpress. As for her jacket, that's a long-standing problem will nearly all Rainbow High glued-on details, unfortunately. I believe it started with Krystal Bailey, but it's happened time and time again, including with buckles and other accessories. There has also been a steep decline in quality as the series has gone on, at least in term of quality control. It is all too easy to find dolls with no hair glue, dolls missing entire pieces (such as stands, shoes, etc), dolls with stains, with wonky make-up, and all sorts of issues. You can find a bunch of examples across the Rainbow High subreddit, if you want to check it out. One of my personal favorite QC issues was the time I found a Delilah Fields (the pastel yellow doll with Albinism) who had several hair plugs coming out the side of her nose, haha. Neon Shadow is actually one of the oldest releases on the shelf at this point, so I recommend looking at the Series 4 dolls and the new Rainbow Vision releases to see what I'm talking about.

I personally love the shadow high dolls series 1, but that’s also because I gravitate towards more neutral tones and not bright colors. So far my shadow high and neon rockers didn’t come with any notable defects, but good lord rainbow high series 4, the twins, and Ainsley were all a pain trying to find a good one in stores! I’ve also noticed the sleepover dolls have quite a few defects in my local stores.
Kinda late to this but I wish Shadow high and the idea for it was written a bit better so I decided to do that because I just like re-writing and adding my own twist to things so this might be long depending on what I might add. Rainbow High has been around for a long time, based on the cheer uniforms, therefore the best bet I can make is that it opened in the 1960s or 1970s (when goth fashion became popular, for example). So when Rainbow High first opened, it was a pretty basic fashion high school, but it quickly gained popularity because it was the best school for fashion, giving students of all kinds a chance to showcase their talents, and the school had better connections in the fashion world because many top fashion designers used to go to Rainbow high. Along with Rainbow high it began to collaborate with other Fashion schools giving others opportunities to show their craft. But of course Rainbow high had one VERY major problem it was very bias when it came to fashion is that they instead of being very welcoming to Al fashions they had a certain type they liked which left a lot of people overlooked and ignored for certain groups who’s fashion was a lot more experimental. Thus, Shadow High may have been founded in the 1980s, during the height of the alternative fashion movement's popularity. In terms of fashion, the school was far more daring and edgy, and it gained the same level of popularity as Rainbow High by fashion/style trends that were viewed as "evil” or well not deemed “normal”. Which the Shadow high dolls could easily represent, why Shadow high and Rainbow high could have a very understanding rivalry a very long rivalry at that also because back the older generations back would call Shadow high the school of evil just to mock the other school.
You picking up the first doll you saw was scary to me. I collect them, and sometimes I'd stand in the target isle analyzing 3-5 of the same doll to find the one that has the least issues. Sometimes, I'd prefer to go somewhere else. It's probably worse for non-collectors who don't know about RH/SH's issues. Imagine spending $70 on the Storm Twins during Christmas season, but only seeing the issues during wrapping. Now you go back to exchange them, but they're all gone. It's bs.

On the Uma that I bought, the right hand was falling off too. Along with things stuck in the plastic of her body, and the clothes not being sewn together right. I contacted MGA and the replacement they sent was just as bad. 🤬

I think the problem with Shadow High is that they aren't monochromatic, they are achromatic. Achromatic is black, white and grey or an absence of colour. Monochromatic is sticking to one colour with different shades. There are 2 ways to fix this. 1. Commit to the monochrome and reduce the achromatic. 2. Make them black and white with a vibrant colour as an accent
it's likely the fact that they're not familiar with the concept of achromatism. if they saw this comment (the comment I'm replying to), I bet they'd be enlightened that the wrong term was used.

The gap feels like the shows Boy Meets World and Girl Meets World(his daughters show continuation). The target audience of GMW didn't know that the father and adults were from the original BMW and just thought they were random celebrities. I was older for the target audience of GmW, and my cousins and I didn't know about BMW.
As a goth, shadow high was the most confusing thing ever because I LOVE monotone stuff but none of the dolls really stood out to me (except the one with the dress that looked kinda like a rose). Then I realised (after messing around on the sims) that they need an assigned colour that's sprinkled in, because it POPS. idk why but its so much more pleasing to look at. Using a lot of custom content, I created a sim (called Mono Stone because I think I'm funny) with grey skin and mainly black and white clothes, but each of her looks has a dash of colour - even if it's just red jewellery or makeup. I also have a version of her where she has coiled minty green hair (cos snakes, stone, medusa, you get the idea) which makes her that bit more interesting to look at when she's in completely back and white outfits. Aesthetically, she's probably my favourite sim and I had a lot of fun making her. By comparison, the SH dolls just don't quite do it for me, which is sad because I adore the alt aesthetic they carry
I know what you mean, I have ocs who uses black but when I'm making their designs I always put some color because black on black makes them so background that no one would remember who they are.
My issue with them is that they all have just 1 coloring thing that I despise. The twins are great, too bad the doll hair has like muted rainbow in it. Shanelle Onyx is almost perfect except for the skirt. Other than that the dolls seem to deliver both too little and too much.
I like Shadow High's concept and aesthetic, but I wish it had more lore and better execution. My favorite SH/RH characters are the Storm Twins, and I loved their aesthetic and color scheme enough to pay full price for their dolls. I find it ironic how I hesitate to buy most MH Gen 3 reboot dolls, yet was prerfectly willing to drop around $70 dollars on the Storm Twins dolls literally two weeks after their dolls were first released. They are just that aestheticly perfect to me and I can't help but love them a bit more than every other SH/RH doll in my collection.
Also, Veronica Storm is best girl and nobody will convince me otherwise. I have also quoted Veronica and Naomi for the fun of it more times than I would like to admit.

Shadow High is literally the only reason I started collecting rainbow high. I have a few rainbow high dolls, but the greyscale and monochrome are so refreshing to see in dolls!

Repo genetic opera is honestly the only thing I could think of her having been in. As a too-young-to-be-watching-that kid when I first saw the movie, I assumed she was barely even acting and was just being more herself. So apparently I never had a good impression of her.
I'm sure she's decently a human and does human things and has human emotions, but child me didn't really like her and I still trust a lot of what child me dis/liked.

My partner got the uma doll and yeah, you did get one of the "bad batches" because hers didn't have the hair as crunchy as you described (only at the end,) and her nails were perfect. She didn't even have accessories falling off
I actually really really like the full black and white stuff… to a point. I think those dolls look better overall and like the aesthetic more- but you are right about it needing just- a little bit of color. And it only needs to be a touch, some red eye shadow and red jewels on the jewelry, some sort of accent color that you can just sprinkle in there to make a statement and make it more unique. I also think they should really utilize more metal type colors, I mean you have steel grey, silver, White gold, it would look amazing. Also with the black and white, as someone who draws and thus, also works with color theory, the pure black and white would look 10000% better with some undertones. Just that cool tone grey vs. warm tone grey, blue-black and purple-black, it will stand out more, pop off of the background, look more visually interesting, and add some color and characterization to each doll without sacrificing the pure black and white aesthetic. It’s subtle but it matters
I thought s3 wasn't as good as the other two because of the lack of our OG characters. We have the biggest plot in rainbowvision but with all these characters it leaves little to no room for our OG girls to shine, especially in later episodes

With such an influx of characters now the story just jumps around whoever they want without any true flow. At least when we were focusing on our OG girls.... we were with our OG girls. A coherent story around them & their development. Now it's rainbowvision but again, they jump around to different characters without finishing off each storyline. Like... um... what happened to Luna???? You know.... we can't see her & sunny talk to each other? They're twin sisters for crying out loud. And Pacific coast? Just 1 episode and bam ... the story just immediately shifts to shadow high. Also not to mention the EXTREME wait time between episodes. We had to wait 4 weeks for ep9 and if that wasn't bad enough, we waited a whopping *7 WEEKS* for the latest one. And what was the latest episode? Just a few full performances for the semi finals with barely any storyline and most characters MIA. I still like the show nonetheless, I'm just saying why I don't feel enthusiastic for newer episodes than before.

Obviously, just my experience, but the shadow high doll I got (Nicole Steel) was actually really good quality, at least in comparison to what I’ve seen in different review videos. The only thing I’d say is ‘bad’ is that her hair keeps coming out of the elastics but I’ve just… accepted that now I guess.
I do really like the black and white of the dolls, and the announcement of the shadow high dolls was what actually got me into rainbow high and doll collecting in general! :D

I think this season started really strong but they've been dragging out this competition plot so much they lost my attention, I can't wait for Rainbow Vision to end already so we can get into a different arc. About the dolls, I do like SH a lot. I don't think they need color to have flavor, their faces are gorgeous and their style is cool. I specially love the Neon Shadow line tho, they're probably my favorite dolls from this brand due to their punk aesthetic but I haven't found them in stores in my country yet :(

The only standard Shadow High I've picked up so far are Shanelle and Natasha, I like the pure black and pure white and think they both look great and unique in my collection. On the other hand, I've considered picking up Nicole and Luna a ton of times but their grey on grey on grey just doesn't appeal as much to me.

Veteran of the Rainbow High fandom here! I would recommend sending in a warranty claim for Uma's hands, because that should not be happening. If that doesn't work, you could always try buying them second-hand or from Aliexpress. As for her jacket, that's a long-standing problem will nearly all Rainbow High glued-on details, unfortunately. I believe it started with Krystal Bailey, but it's happened time and time again, including with buckles and other accessories. There has also been a steep decline in quality as the series has gone on, at least in term of quality control. It is all too easy to find dolls with no hair glue, dolls missing entire pieces (such as stands, shoes, etc), dolls with stains, with wonky make-up, and all sorts of issues. You can find a bunch of examples across the Rainbow High subreddit, if you want to check it out. One of my personal favorite QC issues was the time I found a Delilah Fields (the pastel yellow doll with Albinism) who had several hair plugs coming out the side of her nose, haha. Neon Shadow is actually one of the oldest releases on the shelf at this point, so I recommend looking at the Series 4 dolls and the new Rainbow Vision releases to see what I'm talking about.

I personally love the shadow high dolls series 1, but that’s also because I gravitate towards more neutral tones and not bright colors.
So far my shadow high and neon rockers didn’t come with any notable defects, but good lord rainbow high series 4, the twins, and Ainsley were all a pain trying to find a good one in stores! I’ve also noticed the sleepover dolls have quite a few defects in my local stores.

Kinda late to this but I wish Shadow high and the idea for it was written a bit better so I decided to do that because I just like re-writing and adding my own twist to things so this might be long depending on what I might add.
Rainbow High has been around for a long time, based on the cheer uniforms, therefore the best bet I can make is that it opened in the 1960s or 1970s (when goth fashion became popular, for example). So when Rainbow High first opened, it was a pretty basic fashion high school, but it quickly gained popularity because it was the best school for fashion, giving students of all kinds a chance to showcase their talents, and the school had better connections in the fashion world because many top fashion designers used to go to Rainbow high. Along with Rainbow high it began to collaborate with other Fashion schools giving others opportunities to show their craft.
But of course Rainbow high had one VERY major problem it was very bias when it came to fashion is that they instead of being very welcoming to Al fashions they had a certain type they liked which left a lot of people overlooked and ignored for certain groups who’s fashion was a lot more experimental.
Thus, Shadow High may have been founded in the 1980s, during the height of the alternative fashion movement's popularity. In terms of fashion, the school was far more daring and edgy, and it gained the same level of popularity as Rainbow High by fashion/style trends that were viewed as "evil” or well not deemed “normal”. Which the Shadow high dolls could easily represent, why Shadow high and Rainbow high could have a very understanding rivalry a very long rivalry at that also because back the older generations back would call Shadow high the school of evil just to mock the other school.
You picking up the first doll you saw was scary to me. I collect them, and sometimes I'd stand in the target isle analyzing 3-5 of the same doll to find the one that has the least issues. Sometimes, I'd prefer to go somewhere else.
It's probably worse for non-collectors who don't know about RH/SH's issues. Imagine spending $70 on the Storm Twins during Christmas season, but only seeing the issues during wrapping. Now you go back to exchange them, but they're all gone. It's bs.

I think the problem with Shadow High is that they aren't monochromatic, they are achromatic. Achromatic is black, white and grey or an absence of colour. Monochromatic is sticking to one colour with different shades. There are 2 ways to fix this. 1. Commit to the monochrome and reduce the achromatic. 2. Make them black and white with a vibrant colour as an accent
it's likely the fact that they're not familiar with the concept of achromatism. if they saw this comment (the comment I'm replying to), I bet they'd be enlightened that the wrong term was used.

for the falling hand the trick is putting some glue on stick, let it dry and the stick will be a bit more thick, so will fit better and fall less
One thing to note about Paris Hilton is that she was basically the one to launch Kim Kardashian, and then her family, into stardom. If I remember correctly, Kim was some kind of assistant to Paris, and maybe was on a reality TV show at one point? And on the idea of the two just being opposites of each other, I like to imagine that both girls (Luna and Sunny) were close when they were younger but just sort of drifted as they got into their pre-teen years and from the way Luna acts, it feels like there is a lot of pressure put on her from the other Shadow High students to talk to negative about her sister and RH.
