It's the salt. I've tried tea staining clothing for Halloween for years with crap results. I didn't know about the SALT. And coffee for the fini. Thank you. Loved your vid.
I like your tutorial! Im going to a post apocalyptic airsoft game sometime in the future and plan on using this one, Ill let you know how it turns out!
I have a very brightly colored plaid shirt that I wanted to tone down or make darker. It's white red blue and green. At first I tried to bleach it but nothing happened although it says it's 100% cotton. I'll try this one, I hope it works.
Won´t the dye wash away if you clean the shirt? I mean all the stuff you used water solubale (except the shirt of course) so is there a way of a constant dirty look?
Just passed the time on my 12 hour night shift trying to darken my bandana that I put around my face when I’m on my motorbike. I may have got a bit overexcited with the aged look, my back patch and canvas saddle bags are also now looking as though they’ve been through the apocalypse...
Hey, probably a dumb question, but I assuming running the now stained shirt through the wash will lighten the weathering, if not remove the stains all together, right? I ask this because I've just finished staining a shirt, but it's gotten a little stiff in the process. I'm curious if just running it through a cold wash with no soap will make it less stiff or if it will just ruin all of my work.
JAWS it will fade for sure, but you’re right. Hand washing in cold water should only make the fade minimal. If you did it really dark and don’t let it soak too long you should be ok
emerald white thank you! It can but I would recommend something non acrylic that you can really water down. I may do a tutorial on that in the near future
Doing this with a "vote for Pedro" shirt, did a half gallon worth of tea dabbed on the shirt and it didn't stain very well, should I make more? Make it more dark? (It was rather light) any advice would be nice thanks
Double D about how many tea bags did you use? If it’s too light I’d let the brew with the bags still in it steep for longer and maybe use coffee primarily
The End Times it was 5 tea bags and I had forgotten to let it steep when I did it, plus my fabric is very thin, like I can see my chest through it type of thin
Booty Booty I recommend a totally different method when it comes to working with dark colors- try a bleach mix. Start with very little bleach and predominantly water- I might do a video on this soon
instructions work great, but effects will not remain in jeans. no matter the salt you use in the solution or how hot your dryer is, the stains will quickly fall out in the wash.
The best way to deal with heavy denim jeans is just to wear them while running through a grass fire or stomping a knee high bonfire out. Needless to say, you will need to wear leather combat boots and a similar heavy denim or cowhide leather jacket. Always get a friend to help you who has tough hands that are tough enough to put any smouldering areas out and scrunch the ends of your jeans out if they catch alight. For an even more dramatic affect, you can then take the jeans off and use them to beat the fire out until they almost catch alight. For an event a few years ago, my friend cheated and borrowed my jeans that had been worn for a week of stubble burning the previous year. Everyone was quite puzzled about how he had distressed them.
jjspade81 you’ll have to hand wash it very gentle. The lighter spots may fade and need to be redone- I’m testing some methods now and might do another video
Used engine oil and dirty greace or tar from old car parts are unwashable and almost about the same colours. Aplication might be a little difirend though.
I love the passive aggressive point you made about the cost of the dye pack. I laughed so hard!!
Emily Darline I seriously choked on my drink laughing 😄
Thanks this helped a lot with the post apocalyptic costume I’m doing for Halloween.
Thank you. :)
The basic pieces are the most important, and there are almost no tutorials for them!
Thanks! I'm working on Fallout cosplay based on my 76 character and just soaking in coffee wasn't getting the effect I wanted. Can't wait to try this.
Thank u for this. I have tons of ideas but cost does make me reconsider making anything
Wow. 2 years old. Thank you so much for this! I have an ellie cosplay im going to work on and these tips will help tremendously.
Came here for the same cosplay! I hope yours turned out great
came here for the exact same reason!
i guess we r all here cuz of our ellie cosplays LMAOOO
@@halleoliver-wiley8807 yep 💪
wtf came for the same cosplay too!
That shirt is awesome. I totally want one.🍄
I enjoy people who are fluent in sarcasm, I concur 😂 Great video and I laughed 👍
Thank yoh for the salt tip, i have used tea before, but never thought about the salt to help set it❤️
I’m using this tutorial for a costume based on the wickerman at Alton Towers. I’m not gonna make any holes though. But I really needed this tutorial.
Easy to follow and effective, thank you for this.

Love it! Thank you it was super helpful and loved the tone of the video as well
KaptainKootie thanks for watching! Hope you make something cool!
I used this technique for my Leatherface cosplay and it worked really well! How resistant are these stains generally to washing?
They do tend to fade after a few washes, I recommend you hand wash the clothes in cold water
I’m watching this vid for my Bubba cosplay too!!
Dear lord. Here I am watching this tutorial to also work on my Leatherface cosplay 😂
@@Xandeco92 oh hell yeah, good luck! 😁

Callsign Voodoo awesome man!
The End Times im finishing it now and I love the quality of it, I was wondering, is it safe to wash after the stain dries?
I recommend hand washing it to reduce the fade
Liked for the tutorial. Subbed for the amazing illustration of the clown.

You might want to leave it out in the sun for long periods of time to see if it’ll naturally fade as well.
@@TheEndTimesChannel Does the coffee stain (or even the tea) goes away when you put it in the washing machine?

The salt helps keep the tea stain somehow. But if you wash this stuff you will lose some.
You can have wash it with a bit of salt in the mix but tbh repeated washing WILL eat away at that lighter tones unavoidably

Great job!! How did you get the dark drip/splatter looking spots to be so dark? Mine usually turn out yellow or brownish.

Am I able to wash the garmet after using the tea to get the smell out or should I hand wash?
Im gonna try this ona red minor threat shirt I bought. i want it to look old and worn but its spiderman red right now.
Sad to say, but I could achieve that look with one trip an Asian buffet!
I'm using coffee to stain my shirt but didn't add salt. Will the color wash out faster as a result?
Justin Ransburg the salt does aid in locking in the stain so to speak so yes, I would just hand wash it very carefully.
@@TheEndTimesChannel thank you!
hehe love it!!!
I don't have money to buy some diy but I can still use wet sirt right?
Can’t I just put mud in it and try to wash it out
nice tutorial ;) thank you!
Do you know how I can make burlap look old? I'm making a mask & want it too look darker/older in certain areas like the eye holes
Kodek for burlap I recommend some watered down acrylic paint-start with a black in the eye sockets very light then build up the black as you like =^}
Thank you for the video
tnx😘✌
Can you do the same with darker shirts? Like purple or blue?

Ik im 3 years late but try using black coffee if u do this again
question
After doing this will it wash out?
Adam Gardner it will but not by much if you carefully hand wash in cold water
Is it remain when you wash it?
Mohammed Abdulwahab it fades with wash, washing it by hand reduces the loss
fucking dying at the beginning of this video. love it.
Aging a shirt for once time use yay
Any specific tea?
Scott O'Drowsky any as long as it’s black
