  • Expert bladesmith Thomas Timbrell tries to smash out a replica Iron Age sword in just one day at Butser Ancient Farm!
Using authentic tools and equipment, Tom will be using the fire in our Great Roundhouse to forge this early Iron Age weapon just as they would have over 2,000 years ago. Iron working and blacksmithing revolutionised the prehistoric world, allowing for much tougher and stronger tools and weapons to be created. But just how effective were these ancient metalworking techniques?
With many thanks to Tom from Big Beynon's Blacksmithing and Caroline from Pario Gallico for demonstrating the art of Iron Age Blacksmithing.
