- A look at the arcade games that were released in 1980!
A new decade for the arcades! We start to see the technical limitations in the 70s arcade loosen up as developers learn more of their craft! As arcades start to become more popular around the world, businesses take notice - and many fledgling arcade companies pop up - a few of which are still around today!
Having said that, 1980 was still very much a year of the Space Invaders clone. Every company had a single-screen vertically facing shooter (some had several!) We see early work by legends like Konami, Nintendo, Namco and Sega struggling to differentiate themselves from the competition without that much success.
The real king of 1980 arcades? My vote goes to Atari. They were simply so far ahead of the competition, in both technology (Battlezone) and gameplay (Centipede, Missile Command). Atari set the standards, rather than follow them!
Aside from Atari's contributions - it was also the year of a certain pellet-munching yellow blob...

Battlezone is still an awesome game.
Maybe I'm one of the few people who still love Carnival.
You are not alone!
Thanks for the fun Patreon steamkey Gary! It's FURY UNLEASHED, a cool 2-d roguelike with a comic-book artstyle, right up my alley...
Back to the early 80s -- Golden Age of the arcade!! An awesome little arcade with about 12-15 cabs opened just down the street from me in 1979 ... we were kids, but lucky enough to live right near a small college, and the owner made enough money to stay open until the mid-80s. Always brought good games in there, and of course there were much bigger arcades elsewhere around our city. Great times! Quarters well spent!
We can see quite a few "clones" of and variations on other more well-known games here in this video. It's one of the hallmarks of the era, as game programmers were learning their chops and making games quickly. But a lot of inventiveness too!! The games in this video I played a lot in 80-81 were: Battlezone, Berzerk, Centipede, Crazy Climber, Defender, Missile Command, Moon Cresta, Pac-Man, Phoenix, Rally-X, Red Baron, Wizard of Wor. What a lineup! In fact, those games are probably just about the collection of cabs my down-the-street arcade brought in that year... wow. They also still had a couple of older 78-79 games like Space Invaders, Monaco GP (which I loved! my first SEGA game!), Galaxian, Asteroids.
Interesting that Armor attack involves a color overlay.
Give me the 1980s classic game battle zone
At the time, Star Castle impressed me with its vector graphics. It was fun but difficult to play.
I was addicted to Moon Cresta as a college student.
Dora-Chan and Steel Worker look like they were made on a ZX-Spectrum (TS-20268). Not that these computers existed at the time, but I noticed a few games like Frenzy and Bezerk appeared to have a character-based background with each 8x8 character only having one color. It is perhaps the most primitive way to have a raster color display. These games don't appear to have sprite hardware.
Tank Batallion is probably my favourite so many hours on that one. I think Asteroids and Centipede are a closse second and third though for me.
I remember seeing Cheeky Mouse just one time. It was such an obscure game. For decades I misremembered the main character as another version of Mario.
I played a ton of Galaxian and Missile Command at my local arcade.
2:59 - A game where the player plays a cowboy and massacres members of a minority. The 80's were really something.
80s was the best time ever! ❤
At the time, I thought that Defender was awesome. It has become too dated.
