FIRST LOOK at the New Ektachrome by Kodak Professional

- First of all a massive thanks to Kodak Alaris for allowing me to be one of the few to beta test this amazing film.
Thanks to my friends at Indie Film Lab for scanning these and working through that process with me too. I had them give me a set of corrected and uncorrected scans on one of the batches which was super helpful.
In late July of 2018 I was contacted by Kodak Alaris about beta testing their new reboot of Kodak Ektachrome E100 Color Reversal Film. I had 10 rolls to shoot and tried to get as much variety as I could in that month.

Superb assessment Benj. I'm 'old school' (@71 years of age - believe it! Kodachrome 25 was my 'go-to') and your results here are enough for me to try the new Ektachrome.
what a great video! would love to try the new ektachrome!
this makes me want to try it even more!
thanks for sharing this great content with us!
really enjoyed watching this
I always imagined that the only way Kodak would ditch Ektachrome was to make it better and rerelease it. I am glad I was right once in my life.
Good stuff, Benj. I’ll have to limber up my FM2 with the Ektachrome. Used to develop it myself when I was stationed in West Germany. Also shot Agfachtome and, of course, Kodachrome 64. Looks like the good old days are returning just a bit. Enjoyed your work!
Anyone remember Anscochrome? I used to process my own Anscochrome years ago. To bad the film had a short life and most slides are almost all faded
Wow! Love the photos you shot! They are great! And thanks for the blog it really inspired me to start look into film. Please keep up with the great work and keep posting videos!
Thanks for the info on this 'Return of the Ektachrome'! Enjoyed your summation and images :)
I just finished scanning my 84 year old father-in-law's 7,000+ slides from the 1950s through the 1990's. Most of the Ektachrome slides had degraded terribly (all slides had been well cared for in metal slide boxes), some were unrecognizable as to what the image had been and some lost all color to the point of having just red. While the Kodachrome slides looked like they hadn't lost any of their vibrant colors. In case you're wondering about the permanency of developed slides. Nowadays we can scan slides as soon as we get them, so maybe it's not an issue for you.
Wow, the photos of the mountain are so beautiful!!
Those colors and compositions are just lovely!!!!
Incredible landscape, great shots ❤️
Those dawn shots look GLORIOUS
Super informative video!
It is nice to hear from someone who knows their stuff when it comes to shooting film; subscribed.
Fantastic video dude, subscribed for how clean and concise this content is.
Loved this, and I'm so glad this film is back. Nice shots :)
Watched this thinking of my late Father who was a commercial photographer, he got me into photography and film, what I remember about Ectacrome was it was great for low level light conditions.
Hi! I used to use Kodachrome 25 and 64. Still the best Kodak ever made. Still haven't tried out the new slide film... but now I will try out. Thanks for your video.
First time on your channel. Good stuff man, thanks for sharing your experience. Love seeing Kodak putting slide film back out there. Subed. Pulling my 1N out and going to pick up a few rolls.
.. I can't stop loving this..
That's sick review man damn lookin good, it looks like taken with leica that vibrant makes it really nice. Keep up the goodwork man
Enjoyed every freaking second of this!
Great video, can't wait to get my hands on some Ektachrome.I really hope it sells well and we eventally get 120 Ektachrome.
Oh yesssss, I would love to have 120 versions. Once I moved to 6x6, can't stand 35mm anymore. Less colour tonality and grain for colour became distracting...
@@jameslane3846 I've shot this film, and the grain is invisible in any scan I've made, or even with a loupe.
@@dylangergutierrez ooh, awesome!
a year later, we're getting 120!!
So pumped!
Shot my first Ektachrome 40 years ago... will try to do it again! Thanks.
Great shots Benj. Love Ekta colors. Always have. Great to have it back.
Very nice image at 08:10 ... I've been to Mount Rainier, it is an amazing place to photograph. Great to see Ektachrome come back, there is nothing in digital that quite matches the look and feel of film.
I seriously hope it does well so I can get my hands on some 120 format rolls! The photos you took were fantastic. The film looks gorgeous. At first I was worried it would look boring and almost digital but not at all. Gorgeous.
Now thats how you should do a first look vid! Actual comparison with other films, corrected/uncorreted views give the opportunity to form an opinion. Bravo Mr. Haisch!
Thank you! I tried to make it useful.
Great job on the review. Love the samples n the explanation on how it works. I subscribed to your channel. I want to start shooting with 35mm film again. Awesome job.
So excited to try it out 🤗.
Love the Citizens music in the background. Excited to shoot some ektachrome!
I hope they bring back Kodachrome next.
Jennifer M That’s not gonna happen as the developing process is too difficult, many of the chemicals are not available now. It’s possible they could bring back a more vivid Ektachrome which tbh would be just as good.
shame though - kodakchrome was the most chromatically stable film ever made, other slide films fade or colours go a bit wonky over time. ektachrome is just another E6, not much to get excited about over fuji (which was always the more highly regarded E6). You can dev kodachrome in B+W process, the magic is in the re-introduction of the dye into the different layers. Not an insurmountable problem for chemistry, but it would make for a very expensive film. I'm going out on a limb and predicting that like the resurgence of other analogue formats, it will get a revival, but not for a long time!! @@teleaddict23
@@WeekdayProductions Kodak said that they are looking into bringing it back
@@wuzihuzi They'll have to find a safer way to develop it, the kodachrome process is super toxic and the EPA won't allow them unfortunately.
Slide film was great when you could project it on the wall and see nice big colourfull images .There was a place for it then ..Now though a USB and a flat screen will do the same .I'm surprised its still being produced .
I’ve just picked up shooting film again. And I have to admit there is a special quality in the shots.
Nicely done! I'll have to get some for my M2, too!
I said "wow" out loud when you showed the sunrise shots near the end. good lord those are some gorgeous photos
You need to post more! Probably one of the better videos I've seen on here keep it up.
Hey man, great video. Very informative and well produced. Please do more
Super cool tones, love it
Very nice! Reminds me of the old Agfa RSX II 100.
I had the pleasure of trying out a roll of the Agfa that had been sitting in the freezer since it was new the other day, and boy did that look stunning! Very true to life and super detailed, much like the Ektachrome in your video.
Can't wait to try it! And like many people in the comment section, I really hope they bring out the medium format version soon!!!
The dark blue shadows brought back some memories of using Ektachrome back in the 70s. Everyone shot (positive) slides back then, or black and white. Color negatives in 35mm were too small to maintain sharpness in the color enlarging process.
Great review, some great photos!
Absolutely beautiful. Stoked to shoot my first roll of Ektachrome.
I never really liked Ektachrome. I guess, tbh it was because it was too real. I loved Kodachrome. It made stuff look better than real life. It was hard to use, and expensive to have processed, but every now and then, you’d nail the exposure, and Kodachrome would give you a treasure, a beautiful, saturated image with an almost 3D look that would become a way to peer back in time. Nothing else in photography like it.
Oh, and hey- you’re a good photographer. Thank you for videos like this.
pushing ektachrome can give the most similar look nowadays to the old kodakchrome look
Great vid. Beautiful photos
Thanks Benj for that
I kind of missed shooting with film after seeing this video. Brings back memories of carefully composing and setting the focus and exposure to make sure each shot count. Film and development was expensive for a high school student back in the 80s.
First time seeing your videos. Love seeing the PNW represented by creators on this platform. Also, solid video. I was just chatting with a dude from Spain who has some Ektachrome on order.
Great Video thanks for the information on the film
Ekta ... Oh yeah !!! Ektachrome and Cine-Still ... Love it !!!
Great video! I'm definitely gonna try that film. Man, California is absolutely beautiful!
Any thoughts on the new Ektachrome handling 4, maybe 5 stops of light as metered by your spot meter? Do you average the scene for your settings? Thx. PS Waiting for Ektachrome 120. No problem, have to use up my expired rolls first.
On film days, before I went digital 2005, I always shot Velvia 50. I just loved it, the tones in sunset and small grain, despite it's questionable skin tones, very strong contrast, incredibly deep black and magenta like overcast. I mostly shot landscapes with tripoid with bracketing, but since shooting landscapes was my passion, my freezer was filled with Velvia and since that was the film I bought in bulk, that was the film I used for everything. In hindshight, maybe I should have had 400 to put in to my camera when I handed it to my brother to take photos at my wedding...
Beautiful compositions,
Nice to see people shooting landscapes on Leica M cameras. The M camera isn't just for street photography, candids, or reportage. Its more versatile than you think!
Great video, Benj! Keep it up!
Gorgeous M2
Awesome video ! Just waiting for my order to come in . Can’t wait to shoot it
I can't wait until mine comes in the mail!
I'll have to try this in my Minolta it looks great
Awesome i got a minolta aswel, an x600.
Used to shoot Ektachrome all the time back in the day, time to get the OM's out..
I used Ektachrome 64 a lot back in the day. Great greens and blues. Interesting to see it coming back. My eye glasses are so thick now I'll never get my eye up to the viewfinder, though I still have my Minolta SRT just in case.
I'm so happy that Ektachrome is back; what scanner did you use for the slides?
Great to see a real test of the long awaited return of Ektachrome. Guess it will be close to E100G.
I think i remember seeing that slide when i was in middle school. It got that white frame around it and it use a projector if i remember correctly.
You made a pretty good analogy on color slide flim being like shooting jpgs. 😊
Being from the Southeast, the Pacific Northwest is a place I yearn to visit
Wow, I did not know about this, time to pull out my trusty F3.
Great video! Love the camera :)
Subscribed, love your stuff and approach.
I remember the days, when I was on Kodachrome 64... exposed as 100 ASA
thanks this was helpful
I miss that area so much. I go to school there at CSUMB and I drove around the area every weekend or so and I can never believe my eyes of how lucky I was to be around it. I miss it so much... I wish COVID was never a thing...
I love the quality of your content! #subscribed
I am going to have to find my old film camera and try this film. Would make a great "niche" to get more wedding photography. "We shoot with real film!"
Great video! I'm also from t-town and a Leica M2 user. I found it while thrifting for 5 bucks a year and a half ago
Very interesting. Back in the 1980s I shot a lot in that area using Kodachrome (my favorite), Ektachrome, and Fujichrome. I loved K25 and K64 as well as K400 for moderately low light situations. One thing I liked about the slide films of that era is that they were reasonably tolerant of slight under exposure which usually resulted in a bit deeper color. Typically I would set my Minolta X570 to under expose by 1/3 stop to help prevent accidentally blowing out the highlights. The new Ekta looks pretty nice but I suspect that it will not be as archival as Kodachrome was. I am difinitely going to dust of the Minolta and give it a try though when the opportunity presents itself.
great review, pretty sure exposure bracketing was almost a requirement for slide film, just in case... although now that it costs $2.50 per shot(excluding development costs), not sure if it is as viable. I have been noticing recently that when you take the "character" out of colour negative film I am not seeing a lot of reason to shoot it, I think that digital has gotten so good now that a good/affordable scan of negative film is not better than a decent digital. However seeing the clarity/detail in the slide film means there might be life in it yet. I love shooting with older cameras, a decent 35mm camera still weighs less than a dslr and especially a full fram dslr. thank you for the great video.
Just had a roll delivered today! Can't afford a Leica but I did acquire a mint condition Minolta CLE with 5 lenses. Can hardly wait to find some cool subject matter and shoot the E100! Great video. Thanks. Keep up the good work.
5 lenses?! Dang! Which ones?!
I see you, with the Citizens instrumental track Relent!
Thank you my dude. Your images are beautiful, serene , and inspirational. 📷
Thank you for a wonderful video. Really enjoyable and informative. I’ve got a question about your tripod ball head/quick release plate setup: I note that you use a screw knob clamp, and not a lever release clamp. I’m in the process of trying to decide which one to purchase. I can understand some of the advantages of the lever release, but I’m nervous about accidentally catching the lever. Can you share your views/experiences with this, and your reasons for choosing the screw knob clamp, please? Thank you, Trevor Hawkins, New Zealand
Shit, I didn't know it was this close to being ready! Freakin sweet, man.
Love taking photos with my trusty Nikon FM. Except rather hard to find 35 mm film locally except for 400 ASA print film. For any other type of film have to go to specialty photo stores or mail/online order. Great to see Ektachrome coming back but my favorite was Kodachrome 64.
Awesome looking pictures 👌
So glad I saved my 35mm Olympus. This pictures look incredible.
@Fokadas 35mm processing is still done in many places. Have to look into processing Ektachrome but I'm sure that can be done too
Ektachrome is my all time favorite and still have some of the old rolls in my fridge. I won't use them until I get a few rolls of the new stuff
Hmmm. Time to get batteries for my Canon and Olympus film cameras! Yay Kodak!
The thing about colour negative film is the wide tolerance with exposure, especially towards overexposure. With slide film there is
are limited tolerances.
I learned photography on 35 mm. I didn't switch to digital till 2012. I still have a 35mm EOS
The wedding shot on the rock at Big Sur is a amazing shot! Money in the bank 4 shure...Check out the mountain photography of Adolphe Braun, amazing stuff.
Great video man thanks for sharing! I still have some Kodachrome unused laying around haha.
Dope video brother!
Great Video Benj.
Good Vid! what are you scanning your slide with?
Good stuff!! I have Ilford HP5 in both my film cams, buy just received rolls of Ectar 100, and
E100 slide film, can't wait to shoot :)
Appreciate the video review. First off, it's awesome that we are getting some films back. However, I will stick with Portra 400 for color. It's so much cheaper to buy and develop, and I really like the latitude c41 offers, especially as a Sunny16 shooter. Peace!
Thanks, Benj, for a tastefully done video. I've been leaning toward Ektachrome films and am sold now. What lens did you use on your Leica? and I'm looking for a sturdy tripod for my Pentax 6x7. Which one did you have here? We're moving to Bellingham by spring. Do you teach photog. classes in Tacoma? Thanks!
Thanks for this video!
I would like to see how you keep your photo archive, how you organize your digital photo library :)
Thanks!
Very nice photos, man!
I am blow away by the detail...that is EXACTLY what im looking for..thanks...it is perfect...I wonder if I can use it in my Minolta 600si....Now I will be using my Minolta glass where it should be..off the Sony A57 back to the Minolta..It actually looks clearer than in person.
This makes me believe in film again!
Looks good! I’m just about out of E100G (which has a blue emphasis, vs Velvia’s green). This looks pretty neutral.
