Lots of TV shows are great, entertaining, some are masterpieces. But THIS season, True Detective reaches a height where a TV production have never reached before, the step where you can only call a work, art. This is the greatest season ever created, because it tells us how the chain of command works in this society, the misteries and smoke curtains unravels, with highly existential reflections, the nature of our soul, the mud beneath the society's surface, the most obscure side of humans and ultimately the hope of human condition that Rust Cohle represents, searching for the absolute truths, including spiritual like in the final.
I love that both Woody and Matthew simultaneously receive top billing. Really enforces that the season wouldn't have been a success without both of them doing their brilliant parts.
HBO does not produce shows. They enslave people and drain their talent. This is the work of people with creativity, chained by the soulless executives of HBO.
@@MalkavSaiyaYautja HBO does produce shows - great shows. They don't enslave people and they don't hire soulless executives. Matthew McConaughey was one of the executives. You don't know what you're talking about and you should sh*t your mouth.
Mathew McConaughey is simply the best actor in the world. What a turnaround he's made over the last few years from making movies like Sahara to Lincoln Lawyer, Dallas Buyers Club, Mud, and TV shows like True Detective, where he's completely dispelled the Hollywood-driven idea that an A-list actor playing in a TV series role marks the end of their film career. It amazes me how every movie that this man, branded as a typical 'hot-shot' body of an actor manages to be the focus of every critically-acclaimed masterpiece produced over the last few years.
I'd even argue TV is surpassing the silver screen at this point, something which I think True Detective has been a late but strong contributor too. I hope he returns to the role as rumoured, provided Pizzolatto doesn't fuck it up like he did the first one. There was definitely a lot to work with, and it's criminal not too see more of that lush scenery (Louisiana, not LA)
Noone could say it better. This show is fukin good, but sadly its hard to reproduce what they did. I still hope there will be some crazy season 3, ofc it will be totally different but with overall quality of 1st season it could be great.
Each to their own.. but from my own personal stand... True Detective is a truly great TV show. I guess I'm the right age to have experienced a lot of what these two men have in their lives.. love lost, love wasted, battling against a darker side, self destructive to the point of alienating those around me, but still have the capability for good and doing good things. It gripped me from the word go... because I could relate to these men. Deeply flawed good people.
I'm a bit worried. I really don't see how the next season is gonna be able to even top on this. Season 1 was the best series I have ever seen. Everything was perfect, the incredible acting by Harrelson and McConaughey, the chemistry between Marty and Rust, the storyline, the build up, the music, the creepy atmosphere etc..
All we can do is wait and pray that the new leads hold their own. I just don't see any other season being nearly as good without the two main leads in first season..
From the dusty May sun Her looming shadow grows Hidden in the branches of the poison creosote She twines her spines up slowly Towards the boiling sun And when i touched her skin My fingers ran with blood In the hushing dusk under a swollen silver moon I came walking with the wind to watch the cactus bloom And strange hands halted me, the looming shadows danced I fell down to the thorny brush and felt the trembling hands When the last light warms the rocks And the rattlesnakes unfold Mountain cats will come to drag away your bones And rise with me forever Across the silent sand And the stars will be your eyes And the wind will be my hands
The thing that made this show so good for me was that they built this living breathing world and group of characters with unmatched detail and interest, all in 8 hours. And that was it. 8 hours. For a narrative, location, and ensemble which could have easily had 5 or 6 great seasons of fantastic television, they finsihed it in one season. If something is truly great, it can last. Rust and Marty are the kinds of characters that people would have watched for years on end, but rather geniously, the writers only gave us this magic once. Now, the beauty of True Detective lives on, and we will watch these characters for years on end. But only these 8 hours, over and over again. Just like they said: "Time is a flat circle". Best tv show I ever seen
the problem was that season 2 just added random things and thought it was making the story complex, being gay, daddy issues, being out of the mob etc, while season 1 was everything revolved around the relation ship of rust and harrison charcter and finding the yellow king

don't you think he might? I watched it twice, thinking, how is it possible that all these people love a character that in real life (as in the story) everyone hates? Or I'd better say, they are scared of him. People like him exist. Hope that, if you meet one, you'll love it in real life.
The show is pure quality television (HBO... anything else ?), and it's gotten painfully captivating since episode 4, but that opening is just... an authentic masterpiece.
After breaking bad I thought it would be a very long time until another show grabbed my attention in such a powerful way...then I stumbled across this gem
I m a BIG FAN of "Breaking Bad" **********BUT************ True Detective got RIPPED OFF! Woody & Matthew. You guys deserved every single award!!!! You guys were awesome!
McConaughey's Cohle was epic, and I mean that in the purest sense of the word, not some bastardized version of it like you see everywhere else on the Internet. His speech in the revival tent was delivered in such a convincing fashion. The writers of that show got a nice butt-fucking as well. At least this intro got the Emmy it so richly deserves.
1: Get link ready. 2: Roll a doobie. 3:Smoke the doobie before the music really starts 4: Confirm it's kicked in 5:?????? 6: CRY BECAUSE SOUND TOO MAGICAL AND EYES CAN NOT HANDLE THE RADIANCE OF THE SONG !! AND WATCH TRUE DETECTIVE AND CRY SOME MORE BECAUSE THAT SHIT TOUCHES MY FEELS!!
No doobie needed... Artificial enhancement may be necessary for enjoying other experience for some people, but regardless of who you are, this show does not need any stimulant to be made better or deeper.
Cactus Wolf I personally think of smoking as simply " altering the levels of chemicals secreted by my brain to a more intellectually elevating state, one where all my senses, i'd say, ...relax and expand if that's a way to put it, haha. But a great show never needs anything besides your attention to be great, but damn, when i watch this stoned, i can relate to Rust's view of the world and slightly to the human condition in a more "vivid" manner, the whole thing just becomes perfect+5 :P .. i guess :D, maybe it's just me haha, but that's all it needs to be :B
@Denis Palchak "Каждую серию спать охота".
Title sequence director Patrick Clair "We scoured the Internet for amazing photography and there is a long list of talented photographers-some amateur, some seasoned pros-that I owe a great debt of gratitude to for allowing us to manipulate their images. In one case, we hunted an S&M photographer from Russia down through Facebook, so that we could use his nude images of spiked heels. It was the most diverse visual research process that we've ever undertaken"
I've watched each episode at least 4-5 times each now. This show is like reading a heavy duty hardcore literature novel. You have to watch each one over and over or else you'll easily miss clues. In episode one they had the killer, the mysterious Yellow King, pegged right off but they didn't know it. I found that out by watching it again this week. Supposed to be a new season next year. I wonder if they solve the case in tonight's last episode or continue on next season with Woody and Matthew and interview other detectives involved in the case? Hmmm?
We'll see what happens in the final episode, but I think the magic of the script is that it's full of clues that lead nowhere. The vast majority of the thoughtfully crafted clues are misdirections designed to do just what they're doing, making people go crazy trying to figure it all out. The real story is simpler. The dynamic of the relationship between Marty & Cohle. If you're waiting for a spectacular surprise ending I think you'll be dissapointed. The only twist that remains is the fact that both of our heroes likely will be killed in a shootout and the evil people will remain to continue the endless flat circle. Clearly the entire package is fantastic. Some of the best acting, writing, production and directing ever in a made for TV series.
***** Now that; is a fucking crying shame. Matthew brought onboard such an intense performance that it'll not be easily surpassed in season 2, not in the slightest.
It appears to me as a series of metaphors including pain, bloodshed, desperation and danger although I do read a bit of tenderness and hope. Personally I think it's the best intro I've heard in decades matching very well with he show. I buddy gave me the complete set after I told him I'd never watched a show. The first thing that grabbed me was the intro so I immediately began scanning the opening credits and saw "T-Bone Burnett" was in charge and knew right away all the music score would be badass as the show. Goes without sayin'
The execution by the musicians of this piece of music, is absolutely fabulous. It's a simple and haunting arrangement of chords, masterfully expressed. Just fabulous.
True Detective Season 1 was one of the most influential television shows I have ever seen, for the sole reason of brilliance in acting , directing and writing all converging on screen for the viewer.
To realize that all your life you know, all your love, all your hate, all your memory, all your pain it was all the same thing. It was all the same dream. A dream that you had inside a locked room. A dream about being a person. And like a lot of dreams there's a monster at the end of it. In eternity, where there is no time, nothing can grow. Nothing can become. Nothing changes. So death created time to grow the things it would kill.
This intro is just so good. One of those you just never skip because the music is original, the photography is amazing, the layering of scenes over people's faces/bodies is so clever (and pretty sexy at time haha)
He said he has expressed interest to Nick, and recent news has Nick teaming up with a new showrunner so a third season is planned. But I doubt they'd risk it without Cohle after the trainwreck of s2.
This song blows away season 2's theme song. I've never been a Tom Waits fan anyway. But Far From Any Road really set the tone for season one. Haunting, beautiful, mysterious...
the song has it's own unique lyrcis, but all i hear when i listen this song is; "it will be ok, it will be ok, it will be ok"... so relaxing. when it comes to tv series; true detective means, whatever michelangelo's davud means for sculpture; whatever brothers karamazov means for prose writing whatever waste land means for poetry, whatever the ambassadors mean for painting, for visual arts. so splendid, elegant. there is no single movie or tv series i would compare it.
Anyone else rewatching this series every month or so? I can't seem to get enough of it. Or cope with the fact that the cast will be different next season... :(
They really went for it with that intro, both musically and with the imaginery. Never before was I attracted to a show because of the intro. Pure brilliance!

From the dusty May sun
Her looming shadow grows
Hidden in the branches of the poison creosote
She twines her spines up slowly
Towards the boiling sun
And when i touched her skin
My fingers ran with blood
In the hushing dusk under a swollen silver moon
I came walking with the wind to watch the cactus bloom
And strange hands halted me, the looming shadows danced
I fell down to the thorny brush and felt the trembling hands
When the last light warms the rocks
And the rattlesnakes unfold
Mountain cats will come to drag away your bones
And rise with me forever
Across the silent sand
And the stars will be your eyes
And the wind will be my hands

don't you think he might? I watched it twice, thinking, how is it possible that all these people love a character that in real life (as in the story) everyone hates? Or I'd better say, they are scared of him. People like him exist. Hope that, if you meet one, you'll love it in real life.
KremIsis
I'd be scared of him.. but entranced...
Irene Haralabatos he's a sad character. I really liked him.
KremIsis Oh yeah...they exist alright and the ladies love them until it gets real, then the tears and pain and maybe forgiveness, but don't bet on it.
Neil O'Matic
real life is not a movie. there is not a script. that's why is so hard. you normally do not have a second shot if the first goes wrong.
The show is pure quality television (HBO... anything else ?), and it's gotten painfully captivating since episode 4, but that opening is just... an authentic masterpiece.
HBO definitely brings their A game with shows like this.
Couldn't have put it better myself. So haunting and scene setting.
After breaking bad I thought it would be a very long time until another show grabbed my attention in such a powerful way...then I stumbled across this gem
I'm still blown away by how good this is.
This has to be one of the best TV openings ever made!
I look forward to Sunday night like never before. This is the best show on television and this song is awesome!
Very evocative. Perfect song for the dark themes. Beautiful graphic transitions. Probably the best opening sequence I have ever seen for a TV show.
Goddamit, every time I recite just a teensy bit of this song in my head, I have the urge to look it up and listen to it.
timbr
Every now and then I revisit this intro... one of the best ever.
A haunting a beautiful song. The lead singer voice reminds me of a young Johnny Cash.
It's deeper and better.
These opening credits are fantastic!
I love this show so much! Sucks that the season is over.
Honestly one of the most haunting intros, fit the show like a glove
Really...some of the best TV I've ever watched. Im 48. It was just poetry. every scene had a meaning
I m a BIG FAN of "Breaking Bad"
**********BUT************
True Detective got RIPPED OFF!
Woody & Matthew. You guys deserved every single award!!!! You guys were awesome!
Fuck off, True detective is really great, and both actors where good in it. But Breaking Bad is on another level.
***** Storytelling wise maybe, but acting wise only Heisenberg himself is next level shit. Other than that the cast of true detective is genius.
They were fantastic!
BOTH OF PERFECT ! DONT COMPARE
1: Get link ready.
2: Roll a doobie.
3:Smoke the doobie before the music really starts
4: Confirm it's kicked in
5:??????
Senor Swag Well spoken my man.
when this i had spoken, i had some, very very.. well smoken.. ;)
Well smoken comment:)
I did fall in love with this song 😍😍 Amazing!!!!!
that feel when I won't be hearing this on Sunday
The best TV show I've ever seen.👍👍👍
@Denis Palchak "Каждую серию спать охота".
Title sequence director Patrick Clair
"We scoured the Internet for amazing photography and there is a long list of talented photographers-some amateur, some seasoned pros-that I owe a great debt of gratitude to for allowing us to manipulate their images.
Hmmm?
wikipedia says: The series was pitched as an anthology format, with each season featuring a different cast of characters and story.
@@smackthatjerk Narrator : And alas it did indeed not live up to season one.
Agreed!
This video sequence has really set a trend for double exposure effects......
The execution by the musicians of this piece of music, is absolutely fabulous. It's a simple and haunting arrangement of chords, masterfully expressed. Just fabulous.
And like a lot of dreams, there's a monster at the end of it.
Wind Roadways I got chills. One of the strongest scenes on a tv show i have experienced
MaunoWorm yea and creepy Ledoux in the gas mask.
True Detective, Game of Thrones, The Sopranos, Boardwalk Empire…… I love HBO.
I would personally add The Wire,The Oz and True Blood, and I totally agree with your series, also epic ,the best one for me is Game of Thrones :)
AlbertWesker8482 those show suck
Don't forget Rome.
True Blood, Leftovers, K Street, Carnivale, in treatment, John from Cincinnati and treme.
Yep, HBO is awesome.
Oisin Clancy I think one of the biggest HBO mistakes is cancelling CARNIVALE, started a little slow but the show had great potential

The best intro of a series for ever and ever.
True Detective Season 1 was one of the most influential television shows I have ever seen, for the sole reason of brilliance in acting , directing and writing all converging on screen for the viewer.
one of the few openings i never skipped. just got recommended out of nowhere, had to watch it again
This series is awesome, can't wait for Sun. Night
Hey, it’s 2019 and this is still the GOAT intro and the GOAT series
This song's been stuck in my head for the past 4 years
Beautiful song. I could listen to it over and over again.
That's some heavy shit Rust!
Never skipped intro because that's too good to do that.
This intro is just so good. One of those you just never skip because the music is original, the photography is amazing, the layering of scenes over people's faces/bodies is so clever (and pretty sexy at time haha)
This is probably my favorite tv series intro of all time, so beautiful
Best opening credits in TV history
Masterpiece.
Best serie ever made (season one, of course)
Story telling at its pinnacle and a master class in acting from all involved , even the intro/titles grab you from the very start. Superb.
I started watching True detective just because of this song, amaizing show.
I MISS RUST COHLE. Bring him back in third season :///
That may actually happen.
Let John Hammond Show You I hope so 😍
Source ?
He said he has expressed interest to Nick, and recent news has Nick teaming up with a new showrunner so a third season is planned. But I doubt they'd risk it without Cohle after the trainwreck of s2.
Holy shit buddy you made my day !
I miss this show so much
This song blows away season 2's theme song. I've never been a Tom Waits fan anyway. But Far From Any Road really set the tone for season one. Haunting, beautiful, mysterious...
Mark W Season 2 is by Leonard Cohen
Mark W I agree with your first bit, but it's Leonard Cohen, not Tom Waits.
Extremely well done intro to a TV Show! Powerful theme... best actors! I just wished for another season with same screenwriter, director and actors...
One of the greatest pieces of cinematography ever created.
the song has it's own unique lyrcis, but all i hear when i listen this song is; "it will be ok, it will be ok, it will be ok"... so relaxing.
when it comes to tv series;
true detective means,
whatever michelangelo's davud means for sculpture;
whatever brothers karamazov means for prose writing
whatever waste land means for poetry,
whatever the ambassadors mean for painting,
for visual arts. so splendid, elegant.
there is no single movie or tv series i would compare it.
Anyone else rewatching this series every month or so? I can't seem to get enough of it. Or cope with the fact that the cast will be different next season... :(
Hah yupp but still a good cast...the season 2 intro is not as good as season 1 though but it's alright
Travis Bickle I hate the new s.2 intro song
Sorino yep, im watching it right now again :P
Life is Strange Fan Kanal Me too :) I'm on the sixth episode.
ha im at episode 7 :) I like it when storys go over years. And here they need 17 years :o
The best damn show...EVER!
Great season of this show- opening sequence is just incredible- Bravo!
Season 3 about Rust´s past would be amazing.
past? but...but time is a flat circle
This intro alone is better than the entirety of Night Country.
I stopped watching true detective after s1 because only a few minutes of the first episode of s2 was enough to tell me that it wasn't worth it.
I wish i could forget the whole series and watch it again. Btw this intro gives me catharsis.
ı HAVE FINISHED TWO TIMES ! STILL SUPER ! START AGAIN MY FRIEND ;)YOU WİLL LEARN NEW THINGS
"True Detective"
the intro visuals are so beautiful... can't imagine any other music with it.
They really went for it with that intro, both musically and with the imaginery. Never before was I attracted to a show because of the intro. Pure brilliance!
From Kenya, in love with the song...
Jesus and i though this serie was going to be boring, i have never been so wrong.
This serie is amazing!
Yes thats exactly how i felt in the first 20min of the first Episode haha how wrong i was
So hauntingly beautiful. My favorite television intro of all time.
Literally the only show intro I won't skip. So dark and beautiful.
