FM Stereo DXing in August 2001

  • Found on an old cassette: some time back in August 2001, unusual atmospheric conditions allowed long-distance reception of FM stations all across the East Coast, from my location in central New Jersey, using only a Panasonic RF-HS90 Japanese-market AM Stereo/FM Stereo/TV audio walkman. In some cases multiple stations were coming in on the same channel, and even drowning out strong, local New York City stations. Summer evenings often bring in FM DX but this one was unusually good!

This video never gets old it's amazing how radio stations travel and drown out the local stations. Dixie 105.7 had a smooth sailing across the ocean

In areas with severe tropo, some stations have an auxiliary antenna at a lower height which they switch to when tropo is occurring, to try to get their signal out of the duct.

    1. WRSF is still country as "Dixie 105.7"
    2. WQRC is still soft rock, but has rebranded as "99.9 the Q"
    3. WBHX still has the same calls, but has gone from classic rock to adult contemporary and then to its current classic hits format
    4. WWFG is still country as "Froggy 99.9"
    5. WCIB is still classic hits as "Cool 102"
    6. WSTW is still "93.7 WSTW" but has shifted toward top 40 from hot AC
    7. WAXB is now WDBY with country as "Kicks 105"

North Carolina, that was. I've heard FM stations from as far away as Arkansas, Florida, and Oklahoma, but unfortunately not when I was able to record it -- that was when I was either driving in my car, or listening to the radio at work.

In this case it was caused by an unusual atmospheric condition called tropospheric ducting (Wikipedia will tell you all about it). Any radio can pick up distant stations under these conditions, but of course it helps to have a radio with good sensitivity and selectivity.

Every now and again I'll pick up a station in Houston, TX for a little bit. Sometimes they can come in so strong you'd think it's local.
I knew people who worked in our college radio station in Hammond, LA who said that every now and again they'd get a call from somewhere like Ohio who were hearing us loud and clear! It's all about the band conditions, sometimes the moment is right for it.

Amazing quality from a cassette. I don't know why, but my cassettes always sounded crappy. I guess I was doing something wrong.

  • @vwestlife
    @vwestlife  12 лет назад

Trees don't affect radio signals below 500 MHz or so; the radio waves just pass right through them.
These kinds of atmospheric conditions result in radio stations getting lots of complaints from listeners who can't pick up their signal, due to the distant stations coming in. Sometimes it even fools you into thinking that a local station has changed to a different format, because you hear a far-away station totally drowning out the local station on the same channel.

Tropo usually happens under several conditions, at my home, i can't get currently very far signals (max : 160Km from Holland) due of the hills all around the town.
In summer, i receive ES which i got some stations from Spain, Algeria, Greece or even Turkey and Italia (1000 Km in average !) but they doesn't last hours :(.

Wow! You must have been really lucky that day. I live in Michigan and I've never gotten in any FM station more than 50 or 60 miles away where I live. AM is a different story. I've gotten stations as far away as Colorado!

Again, in my mind, I found those to be somewhat impressive DXs. Grand Rapids is about 270 miles from where I live, and the Twin Cities (which is where I now go for college), is about 215 miles from where I was picking up the signal (northwestern WI).

Wow! normally, you can barely get any reception on a Walkman! :-P
I'm surprised you were able to pick up such distant FM stations though, since you seem to live in a heavily wooded area.
What did the rest of the dial sound like that day? Considering how extremely densely populated the north eastern US is, I'm sure most of the dial was nothing but a garbled mess of overlapping signals! Even here, the FM dial gets pretty crowded on some nights, even though transmitters are few and far between.

Cool video! I don't get exactly get DXs as far as yours, but I have got some nonetheless. Where I live (Milwaukee, WI), I'm able to pick up a station from Grand Rapids, Michigan, 101.3 The Fox (a classic rock station). I also remember a time this past summer when I was fooling around with my radio late at night up at my cabin up in northern Wisconsin, and I was able to pick up a very fringy signal of 101.3 KDWB (a top-20 station) from the Twin Cities (Minneapolis-St. Paul) area of Minnesota!

You're probably right. In my whole life I was using just one boombox-style Toshiba taperecorder. All tapes sounded shitty except the METAL tapes. But they were very expensive and they lacked BASS. Maybe the BASS lacking could be corrected, but on the taperecorder there wasn't switch between Normal-CrO-Metal

I've picked up Canada on AM. But that's nothing. I can't pick up that much on FM unless its a tropo condition. I can get multi path signals though.
