Dolphins and whales are mammals, and need oxygen from the air to survive. They don't have gills, and can't draw oxygen from the water. This detail was given to the dolphins of minecraft, as well.
Edit: Clarifying that I know this is a new-ish repost of older videos, comped into one big bingefest.

Drain a guys ocean . Id up the amount of blocks you can change in one go to whatever you need using the /gamerule command then use the / fill command and use minecraft air as the fill block. A lot of less hassle and needless to say quicker.
