Afraid of the Coronavirus?

  • Wearing masks, not wearing masks, and all the mixed emotions that have come with the coronavirus reveal that-as a society-we lack freedom from the fear of death.
Maybe you know someone who has died from the virus, or someone who lost their livelihood due to the lockdown. Many are wondering when they can safely go out again, or when they can they go back to Mass.
In fact, the coronavirus is revealing the fear of not just death, but also the fear of loss, uncertainty, and insecurity.
In these strange times, it’s encouraging to remember the one who conquered death. In Hebrews we read:
“Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same nature, that through death he might destroy him who has the power of death, that is, the devil, and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong bondage” (Hebrews 2:14-15).
In a world without Jesus, death ought to be feared because it is a separation from life and everything good. But Christ has transformed life and death. This does not mean suffering and grief simply don’t matter, but in our suffering we have hope that death is not the end.
Living life is risky. About nine out of a thousand people die every year, COVID-19 aside (www.macrotrend.... But the meaning of life is so much more than avoiding death. Frankly, some things are worse than death and some things are more important than our lives on earth. We are called to embrace the risks of life and live in hope … while still taking reasonable health precautions.

My mom just died in June from cancer. I've never experienced a death of someone so close to me and I can honestly say I've completely lost my fear of dying. Death has been something moreso to look forward to so I can be with God and see my mom again. Right after she died, there were disturbances in my house such as lights going on by themselves and objects knocking over on their own. I'm almost positive she went to Purgatory first (she died in a state of grace) and I've been praying the Rosary and a Divine Mercy for her soul everyday( I missed a couple days). Now the disturbances have completely stopped. I take it my prayers are working or maybe freed her completely at this point. I know when you pray the Rosary everyday, the promises are you will never die a sudden death and you will never die without the Sacraments. I'm not afraid of no death!

St. Alphonsus Liguori "When they come to us, we must embrace them with thanksgivings, and must not only resign ourselves to the divine will, but must also rejoice that God treats us as He treated His Son Jesus Christ, whose life upon this earth was always full of tribulation. I wanted to give hope on a hopeful video to those who wanted hope. It’s not my calling to be a preacher teacher or evangelist. I do not have the capacity or the strength of will to believe I have what it takes to change peoples minds. The church has people for that. They are called priests. If you are looking for the truth, reach out to a priest. If You’re looking for a fight go to you tube. I am not intelligent enough to evangelize. I just like the quote and thought I’d share it. I’m a simple man.

@Izzy James hey I like this! And you do drive a good argument as to why I should respond. I can respect that. The issue that I have with online debates is that, like I said I don’t think I have the intelligence and capacity to respond well in a little post. I have spent hours talking on a single subject face to face with people. How can one condense that much info into a little post? Another reason I don’t like getting into it it is I have a family and honestly don’t have a lot of time. ( for instance I’m supposed to be making dinner right now but am delaying to answer this comment 🤣)But I will submit and attempt to answer your earlier comment at least, but it will have to wait until my children are in bed. Lol until then!

@@RealityHurts923 l am not afraid to stay at home. I love being at home. In fact I quite enjoyed the lockdown although sometimes it is useful or agreeable to be able to go out when one wants. Why should one be afraid of being at home or being ill or dying when Jesus is always with us. This doesn't mean one should be stupid and cause the spread of an illness unnecessarily. If other people are frightened one should respect their feelings. However I don't think God wants us to be frightened. Jesus gave us his peace. In one of St. John's (I think) Epistles he says love drives out fear.

I was told a while ago by a priest that fear/sadness doesn’t necessarily mean a lack of faith. The example he used was Jesus in the Garden. I am hope-filled but I am also prone to anxiety. I take it to God, bc he knows what’s in my heart. But on the outside it can look a lot like fear. It’s a daily return to give it all back. Only He can build on that weakness.💗

@Renoir Kim Personally, what I did was I first check the things they pointed out about Catholic beliefs and studied why do we believe what for some Christians look pagan or "demonic". On what they say, just don't take it too much because they take their criticism to the extreme that its not healthy (sometimes they will present a single verse and use it on their own terms against other beliefs like Hebrews 3:7-15) instead of inspire others to know more on growing faith. For us Catholics, as far as I know, we practice humility that's why we should not fight them back. Instead, understand why they think of this or that and then explain to them nicely. Yes , I know how it feels, specially when they misunderstood the Catholics as the "Whore of Babylon". But we as Catholics should know more about our beliefs and its origins. How ridiculous it would be to belittle someone and call then “scared” or give someone a lecture and stats about death just because someone wears a seatbelt when then drive, wears a life jacket on a boat in the middle of the ocean in rough seas or a helmet when riding a motorcycle or wearing a mask to help keep people from getting sick. Many thanks Fr. Mike. As you said I also don’t want to make light of what has happened, and I have family who have passed due to the virus, and other illnesses during this time. But I have gained so much too. Before the COVID outbreak and lockdown (we were one of the first EU countries to enter lockdown) I was entering a personal form of lockdown. I had been diagnosed with an aggressive breast cancer at the start of the year, and was in a whirlwind of testing and doctors appointments during January and started an aggressive chemotherapy program at the end of that month. Due to the aggressive chemo I had to be isolated, I had to wear a mask if I went out, I had to avoid crowded areas, I had to wash and sterilise my hands, I couldn’t have visitors, etc. One of the last people I saw face to face was my local priest and he told me that there was no way he could come visit me to bring me communion etc (long story). So I was facing this period of several months with this kind of a lockdown. Maybe 2-3 weeks later COVID hit and everyone else was doing the same. Suddenly I was finding mass, prayer sessions, rosaries on-line. During this time I have been able to deepen my prayer life and grow closer to Jesus. Although I didn’t want to die, I can say that I was not (am not) afraid of dying, and being able to share prayer with friends and family, grief by attending virtual funeral masses, and even a week long conference, I have been able to grow spiritually. Even when my country of residence started to “reopen” I was still living with the restrictions - and using the internet to have daily masses and rosaries. Now, thanks to the Grace of God and His great Mercy, I am recovering, the cancer has gone, between the chemo and surgery it has been removed. I still have treatments to go, but next week I can start working again (remotely), and I have grown closer to many members of my family through this time that God has sent to us. I know it has been hard for many and my prayers are with them. The next thing for me is that as I come out of this cocoon I have been living in, is how to maintain and grow this depth of prayer that I have learned.

What I love of this Pandemic as well is that it was a big shook for everyone. A giant wake up call AND reminder that we are NOT in control. People get SO consumed in their daily personal routines.... they forget about life simple (but grand) blessings, people forget about Christ, many people walk around as if it's all about them, their wants, their needs, and cannot be bothered by other's sufferings. This pandemic has been a good wake up call I think many people needed.

My doctors have told me I could die from either one any time. I've never been afraid of death, I'm looking forward to being with the Lord. I'm also quite happy continuing to live, even with these 2 illnesses. But recently I've had some health complications that at times cause me to suffocate, even while on oxygen. The only thing that has helped turn the suffocation around during those times was prayer. I'm still not afraid of death, but it's impossible to not feel fear at the times I'm suffocating, even though I know the Lord is with me, the panick just comes over me like a natural response to the suffocation.

The death by itself is not desiderable, nor have to be antecipated. I know what you mean, but I think it's good for all to explain that the life is a gift of God and here we receive the blessings and the grace of God which will allow us to go Heaven after the death, if we cooperate with this grace. Remember also that the indeferentism about own life is also sinful, as the excessive fear of the death. The last practically denies the goodness of Heaven, and the first denies the importance of this life. Both are wrong.

I’m not afraid of death. I’m afraid of dying, or should I say, suffering. I’m already suffering with chronic pain. It is a struggle. Yes I offer it all up. But the dying is peaceful. It is the suffering before hand that is difficult. And losing someone I love like my spouse or child is something I don’t think I could handle. Only God knows and he will make sure it all happens in the right order.

I don't live in fear or hope I live in faith and the expectation of the kingdom coming. After God showed me a yellow ray of light inside the chapel of my catholic high school at age 18 I have never looked at the world the same. I live in sacrifice and excess. I have indulged in sin to the fullest and found it empty and a path to a dark bottomless pit. I live now in light and a daily relationship with this mysterious God who seems to never leave me alone....no matter what I do!!! I live as a child of God not focused on materialistic abundance but spiritual abundance. Obedience for me is work but work worth the sweat and blood. I will die but I will die with Christ. I started this relationship with christ at age 16 and I know it is an eternal relationship. For now on earth I strive....I persevere.

Fr Mike, thank you for your words and prayer as always. Could you speak to the responsibility we have to our neighbor during this pandemic? In other words, what if someone is more concerned about unknowingly spreading the virus to others at Mass (due to asymptomatic cases) than catching it themselves? Is it enough to wear a face covering and stay a few yards away from one another (without going to recreational crowded places like bars, etc)? And what about the responsibility of parents with young children or babies? Does attending Mass rank higher than staying home to prevent spreading the virus accidentally out of love of my neighbor? #AskAscension

He makes some good points, especially about realizing death comes eventually. However, the fear issue he describes is not about that for everyone. He focuses solely on people who are afraid of COVID-19 being afraid of dying. I think many, many people are afraid of getting COVID-19 and NOT dying. The prolonged and extended suffering upon getting the disease is a concern for many people, who truly, would rather die with the grace of God than recover and suffer.

Whenever I'm excited about something materialistic, I always remind myself that none of this is permanent. Even every brick of the house I'm living in will be destroyed one day, including my body. This makes me appreciate more and more the time I spend with my family and friends.
It is true that sometimes I too forget that I have to die one day, and the beauty of the body that I praise, will all be nothing but dust.

I was extremely afraid of death.
I used to think about that every night, like a torture.. One second you're alive, the other not.
Then, almost one month ago on Reddit i witnessed a response who totally changed my life.
The comment said: "We take our life for granted and pretend it's ours, but heck dude, our life is not even OURS, it was given to us, we borrowed it!"
We borrowed it, exactly. Everyone has the right to be on this planet, selfishness only leads to destruction, bigger or smaller that is.
I have no more fear of death, because i know that my life will be given to someone else who'll take my place, somewhere in this world.
Life is sharing, life is caring about others, is love. Don't believe to people who says otherwise.

    Reflection for tonight:
I was an Altar server when I was a teenager and I remember everybody need to receive communion on the tongue and we use a bronze paten to not let a particle of the Lord (Eucharist) drop on the floor. I can really see him particles on the paten. After then the Priest will very carefully place the particles to the chalice. Is this love for the Lord? Or what.
I can’t imagine it. Oh Lord forgive me.

Mortality is always on my mind these days! I live nextdoor to my elderly parents, and I'm very afraid of being exposed to the virus, and passing it on to my parents! My sister who is very much an OCD/germaphobe has this sweet, little, 12 year old toy poodle who was recently diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, and I'm afraid it may be too late. My whole family is very upset. All I can do is pray, but the thing is that my mother actually has type 2 diabetes, and I'm afraid to say it, but I feel this is a wake up call for my family concerning my mother's health. We all love each other, but when we're together we fight over stupid things. I guess I'm asking for prayers. I wish my family could come together in prayer, and not waste time.

The only way I've been able to cope with it throughout my life is by not thinking about it. Which isn't really the answer. Both happily and sadly you are right father Mike. Happily because Jesus will never abandon or forsake us, and sadly because the fear you talked about is alive in our minimally opened churches that don't provide the life of Jesus to everyone, the blessing of confession, and the uplifting joy of prayerful song. So fearful no, but rather quite sad a full of lament since schools and so much else are getting greenlighted while we're still being sidelined. Work and money have taken priority over worship, and that's heartbreaking - as well as rather fearful! What have we become or are becoming? In Christ, Andrew

Thank you Father. This is what I have been telling my kids, because none of us are above suffering, we are called to suffer not to run from it. Jesus suffered and taught is how to suffer and offer it for the Kingdom of Heaven. If God means for me to get Covid, I will get Covid, and nothing will frustrate His will. I have heard that I am crass for saying this, but I say it anyway, "none of us make it out of life alive" I don't want to be crass, but I must be honest. My Grandfather died during all this, his name was Harry, and he had been vehemently anti-catholic for as long as I can remember. But please pray for him, he was my grampa, and I loved him very much, even if he didn't like my Catholicism, he did love me, and that was a gift.

Our family, friend, pets etc. I love, love, love living. Even though my health is not the greatest, even though I have gone through some challenges I still love life. Pray pray pray my friend the rosary especially praying the full rosary (all four mysteries) is really powerful. Don’t despair God is always with you. Will keep you in my prayers

Maria altarinheaven Thank you so much! 😭❤️ I really appreciate it, I love my Christian community! People like you! 😭 I woke up so much better today, my mind is still wondering if I’m saved or not, because I did feel really attacked after sharing the gospel to my friends that are in drugs.

I am not afraid of dying except I hope to live long enough to conquer some behaviours I'm struggling with, and be there for my children until they reach adulthood.. But ever since my marriage failed, I have no more dreams and I am not attached to life.

'To stop risking, is to stop really living'.
I've been extremely 'risk-averse' to the point where I have a hard time really living...out of fear of anything going wrong. It's been awful.

For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and love and of a sound mind.

Very true comment father, when your gripped with fear, this could accelerate you death, because your not thinking clearly and not functioning as a human being and can take its toll on you.
We have to carry on as normal and pray to God for protection.
